Thanks! I came to the idea late, so I didn't have too much time to work on it, but all in all, I'm pretty happy with the way it came out. Appreciate the comment.

wugsby wrote:Now when I post it's usually to decry the shameless exploitative design tactics that certain artists use to appeal to the anime subculture on this website for an almost guaranteed win, but I think I have to speak up in this case as well. Though I'm a fervent supporter of video games and clever designs involving video games, I feel I'd be a hypocrite if I didn't comment that this shirt is doing much the same thing that the chibi designers do, just with a different theme. Chibi shirts shouldn't win sheerly by virtue of being chibi and video game shirts shouldn't win simply by virtue of being related to video games either.

Anyways, I applaud the effort and though I am a mario fan I would have to say that I don't feel this design would stand on it's own if it didn't have a mario theme backing it. It's a good effort and I'm sure that many people will vote for it but I am not going to be one of those people.

The concept of a literary allusion holds true here. Of COURSE it's not going to stand on it's own if it didn't have the Mario theme. That's the whole point of the shirt!

This is something that has been done for centuries, and is a very accepted form of art.

Not to vote for something simply because it is an allusion and not an original concept is to denounce a large portion of real art.

For your enlightenment:

allusion (a-LOO-zhuhn): a reference in a literary work to a person, place, or thing in history or another work of literature. Allusions are often indirect or brief references to well-known characters or events. Specific examples of allusions can be found throughout Dante’s Inferno. In a passage, Dante alludes to the Greek mythological figures, Phaethon and Icarus, to express his fear as he descends from the air into the eighth circle of hell. He states:

I doubt if Phaethon feared more - that time
he dropped the sun-reins of his father's chariot
and burned the streak of sky we see today -

or if poor Icarus did - feeling his sides
unfeathering as the wax began to melt,
his father shouting: "Wrong, your course is wrong" (Canto XVII: 106-111).

Allusions are often used to summarize broad, complex ideas or emotions in one quick, powerful image. For example, to communicate the idea of self-sacrifice one may refer to Jesus, as part of Jesus' story portrays him dying on the cross in order to save mankind (Matthew 27:45-56). In addition, to express righteousness, one might allude to Noah who "had no faults and was the only good man of his time" (Genesis 6:9-22). Furthermore, the idea of fatherhood or patriarchial love can be well understood by alluding to Abraham, who was the ancestor of many nations (Genesis 17:3-6). Finally, Cain is an excellent example to convey banishment, rejection, or evil, for he was cast out of his homeland by God (Genesis 4:12). Thus, allusions serve an important function in writing in that they allow the reader to understand a difficult concept by relating to an already familiar story. Even if you did not like this design, thank you for at least commenting on what parts you did not like.

Also, the discussion that this design brought on was quite interesting and informative. Thank you for an intelligent conversation from both sides.

Major props for this. Rarely do posters in general (myself included) show this much respect for the other side of the debate (and the debate in and of itself), let alone when their own designs are the topic of discussion.

In theory, there should be a lot more rejections at this point, for obvious reasons on many of the shirts, like no shirt comp or outside the printing area or too many colors. I hope Woot doesn't leave those in the competition even though there's no chance of them placing, because other people will look at those as examples of what's allowed and then argue when they get rejected.

Before I was saying that I wished Woot would reject sooner/more often, but now I'm gonna say that I wish they'd go one way or the other, consistently. Either reject designs as soon as possible after submission, or do all the rejections after the entries have closed. Otherwise it's unfair to the artists that get rejected late and can't resubmit, where other artists had the chance to come back with a redesign.

Isn't today the day the print files have to be submitted? Maybe they're waiting to see those, and then do a massive sweep of rejections based on the printability as well. Although I don't know if it was cleared up whether those files were required of all designs or just the ones with a chance at printing.

We'll see, I suppose.

From what I understand (which admittedly isn't much on this topic), they have said in the past that rejections are usually not as cut and dry as people think. Too many colors, too small ink blots, too fine half-tones, and the like are often hard for them to tell without looking at the print file due to various techniques that people have used.

The more subjective reasons, such as derivative work, or non-parody IP usage, they sometimes debate them for a while before the rejection goes through.

Of course, I could be wrong. This is just what I remember reading while lurking.

A pity this didn't win... My wife is a sucker for bunny shirts (we definitely keep ramyB in business)... also, she used to work at Starbucks and is a huge coffee fan... so this shirt would have been a slam-dunk must-buy for her.

HAHA...I was walking home the other day and passed the Papa John's pizza place. They have a big sigh outside that says. "We have more cheese than Nickleback." I took a picture of it on my phone and could not stop laughing!

The obvious rejections I was referring to were things that had no shirt comp, were well outside the printed area, had way too many colors, had no flowers/plants at all in the design, had text... none of those would have required any fine scrutiny or debate. Those are the ones where someone's going to say, But THAT wasn't rejected in the Flora derby, so why is this?" And the same artists will come back and make the same mistakes again in this derby instead of getting rejected and being able to do better the next time.

The parody and "too similar" and theme-based rejections would have required a bit more thought, but even so, it seems to be in the best interest of the designers to have those rejections happen consistently, so they know where the line is for future derbies.
