octopai wrote:Best post ever. I completely agree with you. Facts are facts, or what designers and voters are perceiving as facts in these derbies, not biased, angry criticisms. I don't believe Woot is being fair, not because I've never won myself, but because that's the way it seems in their random pattern of rejections.

They have rejected his designs many times before. It's not like he is 100% able to escape the rejectionator.

I do agree, that this derby has been very random about the rejections though.

HalfWheat wrote:Just FYI, that's also grounds for rejection. If it's not something original, you have to be able to prove to Woot that you have the license to use the art commercially.

But also, it's the same as the one they already rejected for theme, right?

Well it was rejected for being off topic, but I dont think they knew it was The Blue Man Group. Its a drawing form a how to draw book so I dont think they can reject it well I hope not anyway.

Not 100%, but that doesn't matter. He has weaseled through many times before.

If it was published in a book, the rights to the art belong to the creator/publisher of the book. Unless you can prove that you have the license to use the drawings commercially, it's rejectable.

As far as it being the Blue Man Group, that's a whole other issue. If it's a parody of the Blue Man Group, it's acceptable. If there's no parody involved, it's rejectable. If it's not recognizable as the Blue Man Group from the drawing, then I don't think that changing the name will change their opinion.

Lately, they've been kind of lax about rejectable entries at the lower end of the votes, so this could very well stay until the end of the derby. But for future entries where you get more votes, keep in mind that people here have a good eye for stock artwork, and if someone sees something they recognize you'll probably get asked for proof that you have the rights to use that art.

You should put up more work on DA! (Although I'm beginning to dislike that site because it's so enormous and there's no sense of community.)

I actually have a question about Deviant Art and related sites that hopefully someone can answer. In the contract it states that we can't put up designs during the 60 day period that woot has rights to the design, but does this mean that it only applies to other derbies and t-shirt sales or any type of commercial site, or is Deviant Art alright? I had my designs up on a new Deviant Art account that I set up but then I took most down because I wasn't sure about that.

So someone clarify please!

joelterrific wrote:Blue Moon, it's a common phrase so I get it.

Yes, it is a phrase. It's a phrase which means something is incredibly rare because it refers to the fact that every few years there is a extra full moon outside of the lunar cycle. Kind of how every few years woot actually rejects a ramy design that deserves rejection.

This potentially fits under the theme because it appears to be raining and the woman might be sad about it. However, the scene here has absolutely nothing to do with the title other than the background happens to be blue. If the background was red we could as easily assume the moon is melting and the apocalypse is happening. The background could be any other color and make as much sense.

There are arguments for this being on theme, but "O hey, blue moon, I know that" isn't one of them. Your flippant mocking of the community here that actually cares about quality would be acceptable if woot seemed to like ramy, but it doesn't seem like that's the case. He's never had a daily, rarely if ever HM's and has never had a EC to my knowledge so why all the special treatment in the derby itself?

If you're going to let the derby be a unequal clusterfrag why bother pretending to police it at all? Ditch the rules, ditch the themes and let people submit whatever they want and take the top three. Who, if anyone, is served by random application of the rules with no sense of rhyme or reason?

I had a hard time at first recognizing that it was an angler fish, but I see it now - I think I was looking at it backwards, trying to identify it's tail as a head of some sort. I really like the colors you chose.

Good question. This I don't know. I have no intention of putting my Woot Shirt designs up for sale on any site - I put it on my Deviant Art page purely for others viewing pleasure.
Hopefully this isn't a problem! Some clarification would be great. *nod nod*

"these gradients (since they don't look at all like halftones) printed horribly" is a common phrase too. But if you don't get that one now, you will when this shirt prints.

Speaking of... also, doesn't the design have to be on a blue shirt? I think it would also help the design too, on navy?
Anyway, great idea, I think it just needs some tweaks for it to really shine!

This is pantone 532, so I think it is navy? I hope! Thank you for the tips. I wish I'd had this done sooner and had the time to fix everything that needed fine tuning. You guys have given me some great critiques.

Thanks everyone for the support! I didn't expect this to have many votes when I came back to check.

Re: Natural Blues

I love this; it looks so peaceful. The blue jays are cute and stand out very nicely. I'm not sure how good it would look on a person since so much of the design is on one side of the chest, but I'd like to use it as a wall hanging.

It's a lighting bolt.
There's more than one in existence.
And this design happens to have NOTHING in common with the design you linked to, other than having depicted a lightning bolt. I guess you missed the different design. Oh, and the city.

It's not super-obvious in the comp because of the "no text" rule this week. I have a feeling if (don't want to jinx it by saying "when") you print, it will be much more obvious on the shirt and people will get a kick out of it.
