This is just awesome. The colors are perfect. I especially love the bright red color. The whole thing looks like it could be used for a cover of a book or something. GMV.

Those are also the same eyes that were used by the Gorillaz when drawing their cartoon avatars. I am saying that nothing about this design except for the text directly relates to Japan. And even if the eyes are alike, you're willing to say one single aspect as unimportant as the eyes are enough to justify this design as relating to Japan?

Re: Dragon Maiden

First of all, the halftones surrounding the upper part of the symbol are NEVER going to show up.

Second of all, I don't get it. She's the dragon? Or she has a pet dragon she keeps in her sleeve?

And the perspective on the umbrella is WAY off.

Not that it matters, but ins't the Gorillaz art Japan-inspired?

Again, I'm going to stick to my argument that our design is in a Japanese style, and that it fits into the theme. While some are arguing that designs without the text wouldn't be Japanese, I don't think that is a valid argument. Woot seldom allows text in their designs, and since Japanese text is allowed in this derby I think it definitely adds authenticity to a design.

All that aside, maybe you're right. Maybe nothing about this design directly relates to Japan (besides the text and the background). But our concept was this:

If a Japanese graphic artist were to design an ad for sporks, what would that ad look like?

The result is what you see. And we both think that the design fits the theme.

This is a very wearable design. I've noticed huge improvements in your work lately. The way you've been choosing colors lately especially have made a huge difference. Great work!

This is very cute, yet the fish, waves and clouds add an element of prettiness, and the color scheme just seemes really lovely ... and actually looks kind of yummy - like a creamsicle or sherbet or something:D So nice choice with those too!

Well. I think it is sort of a cheap way to portray Japan by just placing a kanji. Also, samurai do not wear that armor. It is sad that most people don't do proper research.

Re: Tokushima garden

I walked to a lotus flower pond in the mountain above Tokushima that this is intended to evoke. I was there early in the morning, and walked over to a small building, open-aired without doors, and there was a class practicing martial arts forms. It was quite beautiful to watch them, while sitting next to the pond with lotus flowers growing all through it.

Whats going on? I just saw a shirt with 1 vote and 5 comments, how does this one have almost 100 votes and even with this one only 3 comments? Lets get some comments going so I can find out what you guys are thinking. And thanks for all the votes so far, this is now my highest ranking derby shirt ever!

HalfWheat wrote:When I see this design, the first think I think of isn't "Japan," it's two kids trick-or-treating for Halloween. I really can't think of any other context for those two costumes.

And for some reason, the pirate kid seems to be the more prominent one to me. I don't know if that made any difference to Woot, or even to me.

If this is the ONLY design rejected for being off topic, then I agree it's not fair. But if they are starting to take their own themes more seriously and are starting to reject the questionable ones in this and future derbies, then I don't have a problem with it.

No one likes being rejected. But it happens, even to some of the most popular and respected artists in these derbies. But being on topic is part of the game, which sometimes includes seeing how far you can stretch that theme without being rejected. Sometimes it works, sometimes it doesn't.

Of course you're telling this to someone (as far as I can tell) completely unrelated to this submission.

Re: The Samurai and the Sea Dragon

Well. You haven't included a word for 'and' so what you have written doesn't make sense. Since there is no word for 'and' I thought it was one word which means "samurai sea dragon." It is very confusing, the title doesn't work with what you actually have on the T-shirt.
My wife said as a Japanese it is sad to see so many people misusing kanji and are perpetuating Japanese cultural stereotypes. If Japanese people saw these T-shirts on this derby, they wouldn't want to buy any.

I'm not sure if this looks "too" similar to "Bushido" or the "Roid Raging Wrath of the Samurizzle," but if there is another shirt out that that looks the same it would be nice to buy that one. . .

I was really looking forward to buying a white Woot shirt that I liked =/. . . as were a lot of people based on votes. . .

Ask her what 'American' shirts they wear in Japan. Just curious to hear the response. I have several Japanese natives that live near me and I plan on asking them when I get home tonight.

Oh and while I am at it...
It isn't like Japanese don't have Engrish. Eery culture butchers another culture when they try to imitate it.
