I'll admit I had a similar thought. At least the geisha is rendered in a different style (I seem to recall the other being in silhouette?). Still, her pose is quite similar; I think the other was also holding a parasol.

I see what you were trying to do with the "Dragon Lady" idea, ramyb, but I'm not sensing a flow here--the two main elements seem disparate. Maybe if the lady and the dragon were drawn in a similar style?

Anyway, I'm probably not being very helpful. I lack the language of the true art lover to explain clearly what I think it's lacking.

Me too, I like this a lot... why is he so sad? Because he had to kill again? Poor ninja man I bet he quits the ninja biz in a couple of years to teach kindergarten or something. You could make a movie outta this guy...

In all seriousness, I dig the shirt +1

I was trying to make it as though it's coming off of the pattern of her clothing, so I wanted to keep the dragon simple and flat- It may not have worked as well as I had hoped, but I figured I'd at least explain the intention behind the difference in styles

Issun-Boshi is the tale of an old couple who wishes for a child "no matter how small." Eventually a son was born to them, but he was no taller than 3 centimeters. As time goes by, Issun realizes he will never grow, so he decides to take up an adventure. He is given a sewing needle for a sword, a soup bowl for a boat, and a pair of chop sticks for oars. He meets a princess, and one day they are attacked by an Oni (ogre/demon). The Oni swallows Issun whole - but Issun defeats the Oni from the inside by piercing it's belly with his needle. The Oni spits out Issun and drops a magical mallet as he runs away. As a reward for his bravery, the princess uses the power of the mallet to grow him to full size. Issun and the princess remain close companions and eventually wed.

This is the first derby where I submit more than one design. I had a really tough time choosing the colors for this one - but in the end, I'm really happy with the results.

Ahhhh awesome. I like the kanji on this one so much better than the other haha. It looks alot less forced this time around. Got my vote again!

I like the flow in this one versus the old color scheme; the two elements seem to segue into each other better here. Still not something I'd wear, but that's a personal style thing.

I'll take a pass on the other debates going on in this thread--too tired to engage

Big fan of yours, Lucky =] This is fun and cute, but not TOO cute (it seems that critical wooters appreciate that, and subtle cuteness always draws a decent crowd)... +1, good luck!

P.S. I can't wait to get a woot bag with your design on it! Has anyone gotten one? I haven't gotten ANY of the new designs even though I've ordered some shirts since the bag derby...

If we wanted to vote for originality, we would have an originality vote. AFAIK this is a vote for a t-shirt that we'd like to wear, so get off your high horse and gtfo. Maybe if you took the effort that you spend griping about people liking ramyb's designs and put it into something worthwhile, you'd make 10x over that which you can't win in shirt.woot prize money.

Re: HIGH AND TALL

Kites were brought to Japan about the 7th century by Buddhist monks. They were used to avert evil spirits and to insure rich harvests.

Kite flying became very popular in Japan during the Edo period. For the first time Japanese people below the samurai class were allowed to fly kites. The Edo (now Tokyo) government tried unsuccessfully to discourage this pastime as "too many people became unmindful of their work."

I think it falls under the parody/fair use. I really like soot gremlins and would LOVE to get this shirt for myself and the kid. My daughter loves Spirited Away and My Neighbor Totoro and thinks the soot gremlins are cute.

Re: Forget Chopsticks...

I don't know what it is about this one that makes me view it every time I look at the derby. I like it but I have to agree with some other comments about it not really being all that Japanese. Sure you put a rising sun behind it and slapped some characters on there and sort of did a caricature representation but does that really fit the theme. I think it really generates that artificial Japanese feel and I would have to say that your shirt fits. It just feels Japanese even if it isn't. You have my vote.

Ahem. I didn't think of spaghetti, but my first thought (before seeing who the designer was, so no bias either way from that direction) was "How is a Cthulhoid thing in the sky Japanese?"

*points up at self's earlier post* You know, I said this many posts ago yet still this design is high on the charts. I agree with both kyle and adder, this shirt is not a good representation of the theme. Do you think woot is afraid to reject designs that rack up so many votes so quickly?
