Properly as in proper compound or properly as in stroke order? The compound...there isn't anything better. For the stroke order it could be better but it's readable and not much worse than Japanese people's handwriting I see every day.

Superspryte, this may mean I'm sending you some art to double-check later in the week!

Send away. Just make sure it's not very late in the evening Thursday, okay?

This is the only top ten shirt I want. Wish it would creep into the fog. And as far as the title goes...Japan Fan works with the the double entandre (?) as well. As in "I'm a pancake fan" or it can also be "I'm a fan of pancakes". And now I will go eat them. :p

AdderXYU wrote:Three words:

Yes they are.

It is GREAT to be diverse and like many things, but this sort of drivel is the majority of what wins derbies. And that is INCREDIBLY wrong. it is not inherently bad if woot chose something like this once in a while (though I feel that this particular user wouldn't be a respectable choice to print, given all his sketchy dealings in the past and present), but when you're guaranteed something like this EVERY WEEK that he or his girlfriend enter, it becomes a HUGE problem. And there should be something VERY wrong with that sort of stagnancy. And there is something even worse about defending it. If it can be better, why not?

You can preach business all you want, but if "business" worked, everyone who ever took a course would be fronting a successful one. There is more to business than sales. And I think that woot is hurting itself more than helping the way they conduct that part of their affairs.

You appear to have a personal history with Ramyb, or his girlfriend, and I can not speak to that. However, this seems to only be a huge problem for you and a handful of others. The silent majority, appear to like his work. I'm not defending Ramyb, I only occasionally find myself voting for him, but rather the woot system. Your idea of "better" may not mesh with everyone else’s. If you would truly like to improve the work here, then consider posting constructive criticism, rather than insults.

I'm not sure what you mean by claming that business doesn't work. By your logic everyone who graduated from art school should be the next Picasso, and I know we can all agree that this is not the case. If it was, in fact, more profitable to allow you to dictate what shirts are printed, then you should start your own site. But I'm just not convinced that this is a practical business model. Basically what I'm saying is "put up or shut-up" stop b!tching and start a revolution. There is plenty of room on the web for everyone's tee shirt site, just not enough customers.

Obviously, it's Woot's call whether this fits the theme, but in my mind if it needs the text to be on theme, then it's a pretty long stretch.

Agreed.

truffleshuffle wrote:This is based on Yuki-Onna, a figure in Japanese folklore. She is said to be the ghost of a girl who perished in a snowy mountain pass. She appears to travelers as a tall, beautiful woman with long dark hair and pale skin, and she torments these travelers by leading them astray or freezing them to death with her icy breath. Despite her ephemeral beauty, her eyes strike fear into the hearts of mortals (so I covered them with her hair). The girl represents her outward beauty, while the dragon represents the cruel power within.

The Kanji now say "The Eternally Beautiful Woman" down the left and "Yuki-onna" down the right. Thanks to Mikan for all the help!! Hopefully everything is right now, ha ha.

Yay! Glad to see I could help. I like the gradient you added behind the dragon - it helps pop the design off the shirt more. Hopefully you can get your votes back! ^^

Ah. I'm seeing that as either an ink spill, and someone came along and started doodling from the spill, or the ink was left open and this just spontaneously created itself from the fog of ink that came up from the inkwell.

This design may be suffering from the comparison with Totally Awesome Deer...it's got some of the same elements, but this one is more delicate. If someone asked me to choose between the two, I think I'd take this one.

カンテラ大好き = I love torch (I looked up 'lantern' because I couldn't think of a word off the top of my head, and that's the best I could come up with - torch = カンテラ so it says)

I've got to say that I like your "darker" designs better than the sweeter ones. The sweet ones are nice, but not something I'd typically wear. This one's got enough edge to be not completely cute, but it's got enough cute so that it's not frightening.

I just wrote that, but I'm not sure if it even makes sense. But yeah, I like this. And I like that there's a story behind it. Which is also something you seem to do a lot. You draw a story instead of just a picture, whether the story is existing folklore, or just something you made up.

Draug wrote:*points up at self's earlier post* You know, I said this many posts ago yet still this design is high on the charts. I agree with both kyle and adder, this shirt is not a good representation of the theme. Do you think woot is afraid to reject designs that rack up so many votes so quickly?

Woot hasn't rejected much at all, yet. And they do tend to deliberate longer about rejecting pieces that have the potential to print.

Once again, this could have been cleared up if the original rules had been a teeny bit more clear. This might be perfectly fine, if text is enough of a reference. The mind of Woot is an obscure thing.

Re: Folded Flight

I really like that the text is in the background. I'm not overly fond of shirts with captions, even in languages I can't read, but in this case it really adds to the design instead of being a separate and unneeded element.

Which is probably a rather backhanded way of saying that I like this.

I also like that people will probably look twice at the birds before they realize that they are origami.

By this thinking though, I could have designed a picture of a squirrel confronting death, written dog versus death in Japanese, and my shirt would be on topic.

I still contend that this has no Japanese reference, nor does it have to do with Japan. Neither sporks nor chopsticks are Japanese.

Honestly, this design feels too cobbled together for my taste. You have your samurai, your rising sun, your large text and some mist thrown in there in the background. It's all rather boring looking. "The Samurai and the Sea Dragon" has a much more vibrant look, I think. Even "Rising Sun Samurai" has more context and life to it.

I'd like to use 'Ohm' in a design... but technically its Sanskrit, but used in Buddhism *rubs head*
Would it be rejected because its not strictly Japanese text just used in conjunction with a religion that has some roots there?

Re: Japan Fan

I really like this, and I wonder if the text is holding some people back from voting.

If it needs to be there for the design balance, I wish it said something other than "Japan." If I was in Japan, I'd have no problem buying a shirt that said that, but here, I think I'd rather have it say something else. "Japan" seems so obvious that it doesn't need to be said.

Maybe if it said serenity...beauty...or maybe some play on the fact that you can "hide" behind a fan in a flirtatious way? Hidden assets?

I don't know. It's probably too late to try another version, but I'm just rattling off thoughts.

Some day, I hope to buy one of your designs.

So, you're saying there is no place for creativity on woot. We all better do EXACTLY what the topic is. How specific does the topic have to be to keep everyone from arguing? Next week maybe everyone can do cute kittens sitting on a pumpkin or something. Hopefully it will be more specific to keep all possibility of creativity out.

Yup. They rejected the ninja and pirate design even though one element was Japanese, so they took a hard line on that one. It's hard to guess what they'll do. Sometimes it make sense, and sometimes I think they're just using a magic 8-ball to make their decisions.

Re: Mister Roboto

Thank you all for the comments and critiques.
Seeing as how there is little chance for the shirt as far as the derby goes, I'll take my time to take a second look at it based on the suggestions you guys gave (placement, an actual body for mr. roboto, etc...).

@Superspryte:
Thank you for pointing that out, I really didn't notice it was missing, I'll be sure to correct the print-ready file and, should it ever be printed, I'll make it so it comes out right

I really appreciate the support, comments and constructive criticism and I'm very happy with the result - I'd set a personal goal to try and have a design reach over a 100 votes and, even being so far from the fog, it feels to me like I've won.

Once again, thank you all and godspeed!
