Swordfighting is so much more civilized than when the fish just go at it with their teeth and claws. Or lips and jaws. Whatever.

I only spent a year in Japan, and my Japanese isn't that great, so if somebody wants to correct me, I have no problem with that. Handwriting is one of my weaker areas, but the イ symbol on the left side of samurai looks way out of proportion to me.

As for my pretension, I'm sorry about that. I had to rush the comment to get it on the initial page. I always sound like a jerk when I'm rushed, probably because I'm actually a jerk or something.

To be honest, I like the idea of this shirt. However, the face of the fish on the left completely ruins it for me. It looks..."cancellation" or "slow".

Note: The fish in this picture, I assume, are siamese fighting fish. Siam is now Thailand, not Japan.

Samurai are Japanese though, so that works.

No, you're right; the radical on the left is out of proportion. The first stroke is supposed to be shorter and more vertical so it takes up less space.

If you really want to be picky, the "box" part of the fish character has an extra stroke; the top and right side of the box should use a single stroke that goes right, then down.

If you really want to be picky, having two left-handed fish samurai in custom-fit full (normally ceremonial) samurai armor fighting each other is highly unlikely. Normally you'd only find one left-handed fish at most, and they prefer to use concealed shivs.

The googly eyes on the orange fish are astonishingly accurate though.

I could be way pickier than that, actually. You can see the stroke order is wrong in both kanji. The 十 at the top of samurai should be horizontal, then vertical. The bottom part of the same kanji has the wrong order, too. The top part of sakana is written in the wrong order, and the bottom part of the hook radical should not extend past the top part. The bottom kanji, as you said has an extra stroke and the inside of the box is written in the wrong order, and the horizontal stroke should touch on both sides.

ta-da!

my thoughts exactly...

...and the little suits they have on...where did they buy them? there's no army/navy store in the bowl...

...and, if the winning fish gets blood on his suit, how does he clean it? no drycleaner's in the bowl either...hmmm...

weirddave wrote:The top symbol is indeed 侍 (samurai) and the bottom symbol is indeed 魚 (sakana, a.k.a. fish). Unfortunately, in Japanese, when one kanji is below another kanji, it forms a new word. In this case, the word is 侍魚, which is meaningless, but I think the expected pronunciation would be jigyo, and the meaning would be something like "fish servant". A Japanese person wouldn't fully understand this shirt, either, because they call the fish ベタ (beta, a.k.a. betta), not samurai swordfish, or whatever. He'd understand what you were going for, but it's like when we see Engrish.

The samurai kanji is poorly written, IMO. The leftmost radical takes up too much space. I could be wrong about this part, though.
