mrwednesday wrote:How can you be sick of Fable's style if you like ramy's? They are the same as of late. I think what you meant to say was that you are sick of any good artist printing instead of ramy. I know it is difficult to comprehend that the voters suddenly seem to care about quality and originality and that this has left ramy out in the cold with very few prints, but all horrible fads here eventually wane as will ramy.

You'll just have to get your anime schlock somewhere el.....o wait you can't because no other site will print it.

All I was saying is that maybe people get tired of Ramyb's style because he does the same style, somewhat, but other artists do the same exact thing.

Every time they come up with a new concept, it feels the same. Not just Ramyb does this, every artist here does it.

Brown shirt version. I also removed the darkest color and let the darkness of the shirt fill in the gaps.

I think the thumb is on the wrong side of the hand with the long arm.

Edit: Nevermind. I think that's just part of the sleeve and you can't see the thumb. It looked unnatural to me at first though. My bad.

The seasonal characters look good, but the lines of harvesters and fields look tacked on.

It's a good idea, I just think it would have worked better if it was more integrated.

For starters, tgentry is the most versatile artist here and to say he rehashes is just a joke. Patrick is also pretty versatile as well; he clearly has talent. Drakxxx does use the same sketchy style on most entries but does this incredibly well (something that can't be said for ramy or the style he uses). Edgar's uses a characteristic children's book kind of style but he has more creativity and originality packed in most of his entries than the rest of the derby at times. And above all, most that you mentioned haven't had a win or rarely win (other than tgentry and patrick is too new to really judge).

The point is that using the same style isn't a problem. Using the same style, poorly executing that style with the same subject matter repeatedly and winning is a problem. In the past people have attempted to appeal to ramy but he doesn't care about quality as long as he gets a check at the end of the week and woot won't man up and uphold it's rules and we all know the voters don't care. All we can do is hope more people will see it (and they are no matter what ramy wants to tell himself) and hope things will change.

I don't know, even if there are exceptions I think using the eyedropper will portray a more accurate shirt color overall, based on your shirt and other shirts I've seen. Here's a recent one.

Believe it or not, that's the exact same color on the Pantone list. I pulled it into photoshop and eyedropper'd the color to see if it was, indeed, the same.

Re: Reaper

Yeah this shirt is uninspired and overdone. How many grim reaper designs are there in this derby? Although the execution of the design is better than the majority of the submissions of the derby, it lacks originality. What makes a good design is not only its technical merit(i.e., how pleasing it looks), but also the idea behind the design. I think people who vote for this shirt have their minds clouded by the aesthetics of the design that they don't realize how mundane and monotonous it is. Put in another way, this isn't the most creative design I've seen in this derby.

I love the style that this is drawn in. I don't own a navy t-shirt yet, so I don't know about the whole 'black printing on navy' thing, but you've got my vote either way. I love the swirls in the background too.

Where to start? Well, how about that gentry doesn't even _have_ a style that he repeats very much? Drakxx has a detectable style, but does he print very much? Same goes for edgar. A lot of the others you listed are pretty new to the derbies--would be hard to be sick of them already.

Your satire is fail.

Re: They're my friends

I'm happy to see a mathiole piece in the derby, but may I make a suggestion and leave the 'distressed' background for places like threadless, DBH and others? Woot has rejected before for extra colors and such when it was all just presentation in the background.

Back to the design itself, I like the scarecrow. He has that retro-postcard feel to him. However, the silhouetted birds (crows) could have benefited from actually having some detail to mesh better with the scarecrow. And knowing woot, it wouldn't print nearly that large or that high on the shirt.

All I am saying is when it comes to the thumbnails I can tell which artist it is.

I am not calling them bad artists by any means, all designs no matter how terrible in anyone's eyes, took time to do.

It is unfortunate the t-shirt designs that are very well done do not get printed.

I am not saying they are re-hashing designs, the artwork just has that same edge to me. That's all.

Re: Reaper

Honestly, I think most people who hate on ramyb do it just because they want something to complain about and this is the best they can settle for... I mean, when she makes a cute and cuddly design with furry animals on it people flip out and start crying about over used ideas. But when she creates a more serious design like this people still have the same reaction. (Although admittedly there has been a few too many reapers in this derby)

Frankly I'm a little upset that I got pulled into this. Like it was said by others this is only my 3rd derby. I've tried to be varied in my designs (stylistically and compositionally) and, to my knowledge, have done pieces that didn't use the same elements as anyone else in any of those derbies.

Below are the thumbs for all my entries to date and I think you can see that while yes I do have a style (ALL ARTISTS DO) I have tried to be varied and I would be shocked and flattered if you could've picked all of mine from a line up of the last 400 entries.

As for the argument on Ramy's style and that of others, I'm glad this one doesn't have furry animals this time. While I wouldn't wear it, it's not a bad piece (though Ramy, you do need to work on your anatomy a bit and try to branch out on subject matter so people don't bash you all the time.) As a professional artist I do get frustrated with overuse of certain subject matter by any artist, but woot isn't an art gallery, it's trying to make shirts that will appeal to the largest amount of people it can. If those people want to buy the same art again and again that's a free market. Maybe Woot will one day do something like threadless were they have a "Selects" brand of shirts for the more artsy stuff (though honestly I hate most of those select shirts, buy thats my opinion).
