Re: A Dangerous Concoction

Here you show you obviously have a solid understanding of how to use lighting. The shadowing of the cat, the glow of the embers beneath the cauldron, and the flames themselves are all proof of that.

And somehow I still don't really fancy this design. I think it basically straddles the theme (obviously *something* is cooking here whether it be trouble/evil/a potion), so that only mildly contributes to my aversion(I think it might also be that dragon thing that..is..just there). Ramy, I think it's that I know you can pump out better than this. Honestly, every time I see this 'glowy' style in a thumbnail, I can pretty much guess it's yours. Sometimes it works, especially when you have a solid concept(though I think I'd say that was way back on your sunset/geisha/sea entry), and other times it just looks like blatant pandering (for some reason, people are suckers for glowy things).

It's usually a good tactic to get votes, it's probably fun for you to draw, and it takes less time than other tactics might to make it stand out...so I GET why you draw like this. I really do.

I just don't like it.

Just my raggedy two cents. :\

Yes. You're right. We should just follow the description of the theme... which includes nothing but food references!!

"Last week you brought the crop in; this week you cook it up. Whether you're equipped with some restaurant-grade stainless-everything master kitchen or a microwave too small to pop popcorn in, chances are you've fried, baked, broiled, boiled, charred, grilled, roasted, toasted, or nuked something to eat at some point in your life. Or at least paid someone else to. Now take that knowledge out of the kitchen and into the wardrobe with a cooking-themed shirt delicious enough to wear."

Restaurant, kitchen, cooking the harvest, microwave, ways to cook food, "something to eat," deliciousness. Man, we need to not be so literal everybody!

"If drinking is bitter, change yourself to wine." -Rainer Maria Rilke

"Champagne is a very kind and friendly thing on a rainy night." -Isak Dinesen

a) The Pillsbury doughboy isn't food. The whole point is he is or was cooked.

b) There's nothing to say he isn't currently being cooked. The fact that the biscuits are still aligned side by side like that suggests that they are still being baked or were just pulled out and are still on the pan. Either way, I think that classifies as cooking.

I don't know why you have to defend this design. He is food, dough is in his name.he is a doghboy. most likely a bIscuit dough because that's what the company sold at the time of his origin.

The Pillsbury Doughboy is a talking, giggling mascot. You can't go to the store, pick up a talking doughboy, cook him, and eat him. The point is he is not supposed to be food for you, he's supposed to be selling a product. Also, since we're being technical about what the Pillsbury doughboy -is-, he was originally clay, and now is done in CGI. So not only is he not food, he's not dough either.

As for why I was defending it, I read a post that said this was just an entry about food, not cooking. If it's made it onto the forums no doubt there's been a ton of tattles on it already. I figured it was worth spending a minute to explain why it is in fact about cooking.

The design looks great. I really love the off-centered positioning. The appliances remind me of the evil appliances in The Brave Little Toaster. Still not sure if I could wear this though, because of how awful the bunny situation looks out of context. :[

PerpetualKid wrote:2. The aforementioned logo use two bones instead of utensils, has a cherry ?(or something) on top, and oh, yeah they use a friggin' cupcake. If you people eat cupcakes that look like muffins, you need a new baker.

This is problematic because it is part of the Johnny Cupcakes trademark to change out those bones with other items. It's a fairly common feature on their themed designs to use other objects there (just one example: the recent Goonies tee).

And to me, cupcakes and muffins look very much alike, particularly when drawn in a one color style- they have the same basic shape. The only real difference is that the Johnny Cupcakes version is so much more refined.

So far after viewing just about all the submissions so far for this derby, this is the only design I like & have voted for.

It's also questionable. But I find Warhol to be questionable art in general. You shouldn't draw lines between him and anyone here (at least his lack-of-effort pretension had a newness to it), but so it goes.

A journey of canned soup, however, has everything to do with a can-opener. Arguably the first step in the recipe would be "open can". So it's a witty idea, and an original idea, and a definite connection. Which are things I value a lot in this competition. So while it is also tenuous, and think it makes a pretty weak shirt in all honesty, I can respect it for what it is and, ergo, have no reason to take issue with it.

Also, finally, if you look through whoever did it's entire woot history, I would very much doubt that his or her oeuvre shows 9 weeks out of 10 (on a good 10 weeks) a person who continually, almost blatantly, forces generic, repetitive elements into a tenuous theme. You should really consider what that continual forcing and continual tenuousness implies. I do, and that is certainly part of why Ramy regularly has harsher criticisms leveled at him. Sin once and you're easily forgiven. Sin regularly, and smirk as you do it, and you're just saying "I know what I'm doing, and I know no one can stop me."

Yeah, it's a struggle for me most of the time. It's a rare treat for the colors to just come to me.

There are some artists here that can make 6 colors look like way more. It looks like you're already traveling that road. ;) I look forward to your future entries.
