Re: Spite

Whoa, whoa, whoa, why did this unfog? People, c'mon... THIS is out of the fog and Ramyb is still fogged?

Seriously, this design outstrips Ramy's by far. Don't get me wrong, I've enjoyed a few past Ramy designs (not all, just a few), so this isn't knee-jerk Ramy-hate, but who here REALLY thinks that Ramy's submission for this derby is better than this one?

C'mon.

You love this signature. It's awesome.

Re: Life Cycle

I guess my last post got tattled on. Oh well...

Even though it doesn't cleanly fit the theme, it's a really cool design, and people seem to be voting for it regardless. It seems that most people use this as a forum to share their artwork with others, so those without constructive criticism should just LET IT GO. Don't like it, don't vote for it. The democratic process (with the exception of the 2001 and 2005 presidential elections) will weed out the non-deserving candidates without the help of whiners...

HalfWheat wrote:Leaving out comparisons with other rejections, I'm just a little confused why the reason for this rejection is so controversial. To me, "no video game references" seems pretty cut-and-dried. It doesn't say that if it was a book or movie or cartoon as well as a game it doesn't count -- it just says that if it refers to a game it's rejected.

I could see the argument if the game sold ten copies from the bargain bin in a third-world country, but apparently a lot of people are familiar with the game, so it's not unpopular or obscure. So how would you draw the line on whether the a video game reference exists or not?

And for the record, I'm not arguing, I'm just curious.

Because the shirt is clearly not referencing a game but a TV/comic.

Consider Mario Brothers: a video game with a TV show and a god-awful movie. But still Mario is and always will be a video game reference.

Now consider Cookie Monster: from a TV show but also appears in multiply video games. So, Cookie Monster isn't a video game reference.

Has there even been a TMNT game made in the last 10 years?

It's a dumb reason to reject and a dumb rule outright. I can see why it was important for the Japan Derby, but other that situations like that...

I'd go with 'Three Sips' as Tootsie Pops aren't quite lollipops anyway.

But would need the text so I wouldn't have to explain it as often wearing it out.

My vote. this is not even close to J.C. especially since this shirt doesn't have bones... it has baking utensils.

I think that lots of people have been frustrated by woot's irregular and uneven enforcement of the themes. This is obviously not on theme- whether anyone has voted for it or not. The submitter said from the start that they didn't realize there was a theme until after it had been submitted, and as much as admitted that it wasn't on topic. I think lots of people understand that, and most of us won't comment on how reasonable it may or may not be to submit an entry to a contest without trying to figure out how it works. ;^)

Regardless, though, woot needs to reject designs like this one that are completely off topic, just to let us know that they do want us to have at least a tenuous link to the announced theme. If they don't, we'll continue to see off-theme entries submitted like this one that not only doesn't have anything to do with cooking, but nothing to do with food at all. Trees don't eat, after all, they absorb energy from sunlight, and CO2 from the air to MAKE food and oxygen, not even having anything to do with the death and skull motif that is the shape of the roots to the tree.

But the point of the rejection must be that the Hamburgler and Plankton aren't making any statement here. They are doing what they normally do, trying to steal burgers. To be parody, it needs to be commenting on something other than just showing the original character doing what it normally does.

There have been teenage mutant ninja turtle video games for 20 years. It doesn't matter if cartoons or comics came first, 20 years of video games is sufficient for a rejection. Here's a list of the tmnt games of the last 20 years. As you will see there have been 2 just in the last 2 months and 10 in the last decade.

My biggest problem is that they don't apply the same logic across the board. There are other shirts that have characters that are in just as many if not more video games than the turtles are but they aren't rejected. Likewise, there are some shirts that are obviously off topic and aren't rejected but other shirts might be on topic and are rejected. Basically the whole thing seems rigged. I think some of these people are just friends with whoever is deciding to reject shirts.

I just wanna say that I love this design in almost every way possible. I love it for the empathy, for the cuteness factor, for the way the oven is so well placed and draws on the body as a whole rather than looking like it was just stuck to the shirt.

Why it has so few votes, I don't know. =(

Awww, thanks so much for the comment. The site seemed to be having a lot trouble when I submitted, so that could have contributed to the low votes. It's hard to tell though what people will get really excited for. =D
