truffleshuffle wrote:Really cool effect with the lighting!! However, I feel like a lot of people might derive religious connotations from this...you know with God looking down on the Tree of Knowledge in Eden. Maybe that's just me though...

I am a religious person and didn't think of that at first. I actually thought it centered around the idea that the single apple was a bit of hope to end hunger.

Turns out that the shirt is more of a metaphor though anyway for the tree being hunger and the rain and light being hope. I guess it can be interpreted many different ways.

I really do like this design, but I do have to admit that those halftones are pretty fine in size for how much the shirt uses them.

I really like the majority of the changes made here. Her expression is much softer and conveys more meaning. The background makes her pop out better, and the highlighting is excellent.

The glow coming from the umbrella still isn't doing it for me and the halftones aren't helping. Overall, I do like the piece much better and I'll give it a +1.

Initially, I really liked this concept, but that was with your explanation. I don't think it'll be very easy for others to get anywhere close to guessing it.

Besides, there are much stronger concepts that are also beautiful, but more visually interesting.

....Plus I, too, am worried about those halftones.

jfetterman wrote:Incredible design! I volunteer at an all-cats (no-kill) shelter and we'd easily sell dozens of this shirt if it were available. Hunger doesn't only affect humans.

Thanks so much Jfetterman!

creamcake47 wrote:I also volunteer at no kill animal shelter, this would be a big seller there.

To both creamcake, jfetterman (or anyone else who has thought likewise)... are these non-profit animal shelters? If so, and if they have the motivation/capacity/know-how to get shirts printed, PM me with the info of the shelter so I can check them out, and you ask the shelters if they are interested, etc and we can go from there.

As long as they are not for profit, I would be willing to give the design for their use gratis. I love animals (especially cats!) and try to donate when I can to the animal humane society, to the no-kill cat place near me, etc. I would certainly be happy to help by providing this design if they would like to sell tees to raise awareness/funds for the animals!

(I couldn't give it until a certain amount of days are up that woot has a hold (60? 90? I'd have to check), but it could be sorted out in the meantime).

Or, I could try Good Joe, (haven't tried it yet, but I believe it tries to have positive messages on their shirts?), and I think they donate to good causes per shirt? I think users can nominate the causes.

Altheahelaine wrote:Um, no. I'm sorry but I know what hope is, and regardless of what you say this does not represent hope for *me*. To be honest, it reminds me of a bunch of homeless people standing around a trashcan fire.

I concede that interesting art can be interpreted differently by different people (is the Mona Lisa smiling?) but I contend that a fire in a trash can can symbolize hope, especially to a cold, homeless person.

An opinion should be the result of thought, not a substitute for it.

Re: Fire of Hope

I wish this had been submitted to a different derby. Where it would fit the theme better.

That said, I'm not seeing an explosion, because I would expect people to be falling back or flying through the air from the force.

But it doesn't have the organic feel of a campfire or trashbin fire or any other earthy fire. These rays of light are more directed and forceful. You'd expect a more flickering/moving light from a fire.

It reminds me of what you'd see in sci-fi where some alien orb opens up and people are drawn to look at whatever is emerging. The aliens could be bringing peace, love, and chips and dip, but that's usually not the case.

factory47 wrote:The perfect shirt?.... i think yes

Not quite.

It's a great concept, but I don't like the emphasis on Africa over other countries, even if it wasn't intentional, it's there. (Actually, if it WAS intentional, if the artist had a particular interest in Africa, then I'd probably be more OK with it....)

Also, the design isn't very visually interesting, although it is well done.

I like it, but not enough to vote and buy, sorry.

not only are people here mostly jealous but its hilarious to me that even if you did copy/paste some of the anime stuff and have "not so real" birds. your stuff is at the top. regardless of how it got there..its on top. AND you get paid.

haha, tomatoes? I wasn't aware that was a big squirrel treat. hehe that must be very amusing! Are the birds big and aggressive? Why are they attacking?
Where I live, the birds are scared of the squirrels! The squirrel is always taking over the birdfeeder, and the birds hover nearby looking anxious, but usually won't go on until the squirrel leaves.

Eh... what? The "they're jealous" argument is about as logical as invoking Godwin's Law. It's never the case, and people who use it look stupid. Additionally, neither of these designs are currently in print territory.

Those lost three sentences are practically non-sequiturs.

It's also getting really old. Every critic, it keeps being said, secretly admires who they're criticizing. It's armchair psychoanalysis and a way of dismissing the arguments by appealing to motive.

Funny you mention that, when I first started I had all the sun rays separate from one another. Surprisingly it actually looked more like spot lights. To be honest, the sun rays actually never converge, they just are diffused at the bottom. That was intentional to give it a more natural lighting effect.

Just another unpleasant effect from scaling the design to fit the shirt comp. Not present in the print file.

That is exactly why I added the apple to the design. I liked the idea of the multiple meanings. I had mentioned it in the discussion thread, I forgot to post it here.

Indeed. For it to be true, critics of Ramy/Ski would have to bash EVERYONE whose talents they secretly desired. Of course, that's not the case. Adder, for example, frequently praises many a designer and design. He has a whole blog dedicated to praising good designs. And yet he probably gets more "you're just jealous" remarks aimed at him than anyone else.

Thank you so much!

I really just went with my inner feelings. All I could think of was happy kids, sharing nutritious food together. I would happily give this design to a foundation if they liked it. My friends actually suggested it too. I would be just fine not getting paid if it meant the money went to the hungry. <3
