Yeah that's gotta be the reason. It's really close.
But that's a little silly. This seems more like a coincidence than a blatant copyright infringement.
Every creepy looking voodoo doll wielding a knife with a pumpkin in the picture is an infringement in that case.

I have to agree with some of the other comments, the cat feels a little out of place. A re-sub without the cat and a centered design would be perfect.

I demand the Woot kitties answer why this was rejected! It is a fine piece of art and makes great use of the subject matter. I really like the way it is drawn as if a colored pencil technique was used. Just cause those kitties at the Woot do not have an appreciation for fine work the least they can do is give plausible reason for rejection, but what would you expect from a bunch of kitties anyways!

I should have known better to get my hopes up when I saw the announcement of the Halloween derby. From that point on, this whole derby has been a huge disappointment.

From the completely unfair start, allowing a favored few to gain a several hour head start on the voting, to this point of my favorite artist getting arbitrarily shafted while other crapola is allowed to stay.

shoulda known better.

Re: I Like Candy

oh- and I'll add it seems obvious that woot doesn't like Drakxxx's stuff. From the Steampunk Derby debacle, to turning down a great seasonal daily he offered with "Requim of the Soul Stealer" design, to this design getting rejected out of nowhere, with no explanation why, and without giving the artist a chance to know what to fix.

just a lot of stuff like this happens to Drakxxx. No wonder a lot of the good artists leave here after a while...

Re: No More Mr. Nice Guy!

I disagree with the text completely overpowering the design, as while it works as a design element, I don't think it has to be read at all for the shirt's message/joke to come across.

IMHO, anyone who's read enough vintage comics has seen the old 'Charles Atlas' type ads hundreds of times, and will grasp and appreciate the parody almost immediately from the pictures alone.

Did it ever occur to anyone that maybe she just likes drawing cats in pumpkins and she thought maybe she'd put it up and see how much other people like it?

Honestly what you think of the artist as a person doesn't matter. If you have a problem with the artist, tell woot and let them handle it as they see fit, vote for another shirt, don't buy the shirt, etc. If people like the cat, and they want to wear it, what's the problem?! THREE SHIRTS will be printed. It's not like if you want one it has to be the cat.

I love this website! ^^

i think all of seki's "lights" produce some negative/thrown off lighting. i dont think any of her images have ever shown lighting properly (last derby entry and this as well now, just to show her latest two)

and if her first image was rejected, this should too. regardless of copyright, regardless of commonality. whatever Woot's reason was for rejecting the first one should be the same for rejecting this one. if all that has changed is the color of the cat, then it is the same exact image.

I just want to echo everyone else's disappointment with how this derby is going and how Woot is handling it. How Woot can reject this entry and not reject the orange kitten after they already rejected the purple kitten is mindboggling. And then to reject this with absolutely no reason given, is unfair on Woot's part. I can only hope that my other favorite Drakxxx submission of this derby, requiem of a soul stealer, somehow makes it into the fog.

I'd like to end this on a positive note, and say thank you Drakxxx for submitting such awesome designs.

But the shirts I cited do have characteristics in common with Drakxxx's work - grotesque expressions, a baroque composition that emphasizes the whole rather than a single point of focus, dark themes, and a high level of detail. And, more broadly, a focus on atmosphere rather than a single clear concept.

This last point is where I get frustrated with Drakxxx - because he's better when he's doing something like I Like Candy, which has a clear concept - than something like Creeping Darkness, which is a dreadfully generic shirt with a pumpkin slapped on it. And it's why I think that Drakxxx's single best design remains his criminally undervoted entry for Music: http://shirt.woot.com/Derby/Entry.aspx?id=29612

As I cited elsewhere, those characteristics are too superficial to really merit comparison. Not all horror films are alike, even within the same subgenres (like the original Halloween vs. almost every other "slasher" film) And again, I can't fathom your use of the word "generic" here. Drak's work isn't generic in the context of "goth" horror stuff. It's far too visually creative.

PhilSandifer wrote:I suppose I just don't see the various shades of menacing creepy monsters as all that different from Ramy switching a bunny for a cat. I mean, on its own merits, I Like Candy is Drakxxx's strongest design in the derby, and deserves a print. But I'm frustrated that Drakxxx opted to water it down with two shirts that cover very similar territory.

It's hella different. Why? For one, Drak is reallt good at drawing, and infuses each piece with its own sense of style. Yes, his general style is recognizable (Gothic horror), but he doesn't recycle designs and characters. Each piece of his is wonderfully detailed and beautifully drawn in its own way. Ramy/Ski pieces have none of that. Additionally, he doesn't pay lip service to the theme each week. Yes, he tailors the theme to his own style. But his pieces are always constructed around the theme and true to it. Ramy and Seki routinely recycle the same, stale designs and only loosely tie to the theme (which I don't accuse them of doing this week).

And I Like Candy is not superior simple because it's "different" for Drakxxx. I think it's his weakest piece in the derby.

edit: hm, I thought we were referring to "Go Out Prepared".

Unfortunately, those previous submissions have gained you a reputation. You're going to need to prove to Woot that the site that art came from actually belongs to you and that you drew the picture in question. They might not un-reject it for this derby, but they might ask first before they reject next time. Otherwise, they're going to continue to be skeptical of everything you submit.
