As far as I'm concerned, Drakxxx owns shirt.woot. This shirt needs to be made.

Oh goood goooooood! I very much intended this entry to be.....comedic XD~~~.

Thanks for liking the Dogcatcher! That poor guy is just lost in the woods of this derby. That's ok though, he can ease into obscurity and star in The Surreal Life someday LOL.

In regard to the tiger/cat/pumpkin tshirt. It certainly won't score any marks for originality, that's for sure. But it's cute, and people dig that. It will sell well, so Woot might be motivated by thier own pocketbook. Conversely, the powers that be might (potentially) come down a little harsher to certain artists, if come $$$ time, their shirts didn't sell very well.

I saw a hamburger analogy earlier, and I'll take it one step further: You might say that McDonalds is still in business in spite of the fact that their food is cheap, bland and generic. I say, they're still in business BECAUSE their food is cheap, bland and generic. There are a dozen other burger joints in my town with much better food... but they only catch the niche market for the most part.

Likewise, the uber-cute chibi kitten may be bland, overused and generic... but it sells well. Until there is a major paradigm shift in US culture, I suspect you are fighting a losing battle.

The problem with Woot not enforcing their own rules is that it angers the artists who do follow the derby rules. If Woot intends on keeping a wide variety of artists here, they need to be fair about enforcement.

If, on the other hand, they want to retain just a few specific artists, they could do away with the derby and just print those few artists.

Of course McDonalds sells well, but they are also very protective of their idenity. If someone else came along and tried to sell another McBurger, the McLawyers would shut them down in a heartbeat. Woot, and most of the voters, have no problem with cute shirts, but when they're too close to things that are already being sold, Woot pulls the plug on those designs. It's not that the shirt is too bland or too fluffy. It's that it's too close to an existing design.

At the same time, you aren't seeing creative chefs trying to produce a McBurger clone. They're off creating new things.

The people who throw votes without thinking would not have that option, and you would also not be able to use dummy accounts (unless you're made of cash). Granted, it would be an unpopular rule at first, but if you think about why we're voting it makes perfect sense. You vote because you want to buy the shirt...(or, supposedly).

This isnt DeviantArt..we're not here to vote for cool or pretty. We're here to vote for "I want to wear that." I tend to agree that if you put a vote on something, putting your money where your mouth is would end a looot of issues here.

Couldn't agree more. As a non-artistic derby fan I only vote on the actual shirts I really would wear. Most of the time they don't end up winning and I have to see shirts like the cream colored giraffe shirt from the parks derby sit there for sale all day and not even sell out one shirt size! (At least it had not last I checked at 10pm that night. As a person that wants to buy a lot of the shirts I see on derbies that is really frustrating. Not to knock some of the designs that do win, because they are great pieces of art, but I honestly don't want to walk around with a cat in a pumpkin or a cream colored giraffe on my chest all day. If voters had to actually buy the shirts they voted on, it would make a huge difference in allowing shirts that will sell and make money to actually win. They are trying to run a business after all.

Your point?

Obviously it's still on top. And Obviously it's the same shirt that got rejected before. But only one of those things states whether it deserves to be there.

I don't have a problem with opinions..

I do take exception to the pack like mentality that some of your chartered members have... From my perspective, you guys just seem to come out like rabid animals (forgive the pun) anytime Ramy or Seki post a design... I'm not trying to offend, I'm just pointing out that it's very obvious that it's personal...

For the record, I do submit... under a different name... Not often, but I have submitted...

you've edited this, but since i saw the original i'd like to point out that my problem is never with seiki and ramby. while most of their designs aren't for me (though i have voted for a few), i would not want them all rejected and i don't care if others vote for them IF they like them. my problem is people voting for spite, which i've said goes both ways as does the trash talking, and the odd rules and rejections woot has in place. there was nothing changed here but the color of the cat, and its still a similar project. it stinks as many will find this design better than some they find at their local shirt distributors, but only fair to other artists who have been whacked for less.

as for pointing out things, i do sometimes point out things more for them just like i did last week cause they've been known to do 2nd versions (though i don't think i did for parks or cooking). last week each one submitted a version 2.0. i've noticed some artists will read the critique and questions, but never think of resubmitting (possibly out of fear of losing votes) so sometimes i don't bother with their's. i only did this week on ramby's cause i accidently said something on his first design and then saw his 2nd design to say how the rabbit and cat should be switched since the cat didn't seem to care a zombie dog was behind them. also i thought the dog was just dressed up, but i can be easily confused, just ask patrickpens's were- pumpkins.

it may seem like i'm only after ramby and seiki for the same reason others only seem to go after them, which is that they get so much play while others are kinda ignored. notice how no one started a big deal when cyclonaut's design was said to be:

"A: Submit the overdone, disproportionate pin up Halloween Ho (in gym socks, none the less - WT?) who's apparently b***h slapping some poor pumpkin headed child that resulted from Octo-mom's consumption of Monsanto squash during pregnancy. (Or perhaps her plastic surgeon was simply twisted and decided to surprise her.)"

while maybe not something they tell the artist every week, i think that's a bit personal and rude as well, but no one seemed to go after them.

but in the end i really have no pony in this race. i vote for shirts i like just like everyone else is given the chance to do, hell, i may have even voted for some of your's (cue the twilight zone music!!!).

ps, we may seem a bit crabby cause we're just confused once again over the rules and rejections. as i've said numerous times i think they should pay more attention to the derby and do rejections daily cause as others have said last chance ones don't give an artist much of a chance for a do over and sometimes just make them confused when it would've been an obvious rejection the first day.

More detail was added. Hope you all enjoy this!

Here is a larger view:

And some close-ups:

And I explained why I made this in my original post. Here are the reasons:

1. the bright orange robe of Buddhist monks fits quite well with Halloween.

2. I decided to make the begging bowl into a pumpkin and filled it with candy (begging bowls are used for either money or food for Buddhist monks so it is not a far stretch). Technically speaking your trick or treat bucket is a begging bowl for Halloween.

3. I placed a bunch of carved pumpkins around the monk as if he is sitting in the middle of a lotus, another parody to the Buddhism symbol.

4. You can also think of these floating pumpkins as mysterious protection mechanism for this fighting monk (like those floating skulls swirling around the necromancer).

5. The gigantic moon of Halloween behind can also be interpretted as the halo or aureloa commonly used in Buddhist iconography.

If you like it, show me some love (and votes!). If you think it is meh, also let me know so that I can improve my design over the years!

Any comments greatly appreciated!

What does the having some more accountability in the voting process have to do with overdrawing a bank account? I see no parallel in your objection to suggestions in changing the voting process and your childish attempts to insult those that suggest change. If you're happy with the way it is, good for you! Please buy 3 tiger in pumpkin shirts when it gets printed and show that you are a supporter of the current process. I'll keep my money in my, in what you must assume, dilapidated bank account (which is not), and vote with my wallet.

I think it's an interesting take on Buddhism.
I'm doubting that the halftones are big enough for woot's capabilities. They tell us that halftone dots ought to be at least 1 point in diameter, and many of these look smaller.

So if I understand correctly, 72 points = 1 inch? The halftone in this image was done with a 40 lines/inch setting so I am assuming it should be within the technical capability?

I never really liked candy corn, though I did using the top bit as a pretend "my tooth has fallen out" trick. If you bite off the yellow and orange, it really looks like a little tooth, especially when you have kid sized teeth! And then, you can eat the "tooth" and really freak everyone out even more, hehe.

Oh man, I totally did this too! wahahahaha. I had a great plan to use candy corn to fool the tooth fairy and make some extra money, but then I told the plan to my mom in confidentiality. For some reason the tooth fairy ended up not taking my bait *sigh*.

Re: The unified cat-pumpkin theory

In an attempt to explain all this commotion over pumpkins with feline inside, I elaborated this very intricate, profoundly exhausting guide on how it works. It took hours of effort and I had help from several scholars as we debated the existential question of the cat inside the pumpkin. Schrödinger would be proud.
Definitely worth of fogging just so we can better understand what is going on in this mad, mad world. And I need money to buy more pumpkins and cats.
