Or not.

There is no excuse for this shirt to not be rejected.

And there is no excuse for a plagiarized shirt to not be rejected, or a similar-shirt-existing shirt to not be rejected, or for them to reject based on their own damn rules.

If they aren't going to follow their rules because people are angry over them not following their rules, they are broken human beings who respect their artists as much as Sekiyoku respects the rest of this community based on this resub.

I'm not voting because I'm one of those guys who can't bring himself to buy holiday-specific designs, but I just wanted to drop in and say that this is my favourite entry this derby. I love the illustration, the simple and understated colour choices, the charm of the character (and the pumpkin as well), the way tree twists. It's all wonderful. I really hope this wins because it definitely deserves to be printed. Brilliant work, sir.

It might be more than just the size of the halftones, though. Other factors, like whether there's an underlying color or adjacent colors, might be a factor in their decisions. But since they've never spelled it out, pretty much everyone is guessing, and then hoping that their design will actually be okay.

I was just reading eHalcyon's thread Designing for the Derby - the section labeled "fine details" has some information about pixel width.

This is very much in BassAnimation's style and is a unique and interesting image. It's not the cat in a witches hat playing with a pumpkin trying to look as cute as possible. It's a cat with a sawed open head and a monster peeking out from where brains should be, with blood dripping down the head.

You know, you complain that people brush you off, yet the first sentence in each of your posts here was condescending or directly insulting. You come off as a troll who is complaining only to hear your own voice, and you do the classic "Ignore any part of the thread that you can just to complain more".

You want people to listen? Try being nice for once. Please. You can say the same things in a nicer tone and, gasp, people won't just think of you as an unmitigated jackass who would best be ignored.

If you ARE a troll, feel free to keep insulting people, but you can't do that and go "Boo hoo" when people brush you off. These internets have been around a long time now and people can smell your ilk from a ways away.

If you're not a troll, if you're really this socially inept guy and have no idea that what you're saying makes you sound rude, belligerent, and self absorbed, then I am so so sorry for you.

If I could start a "slow clap" on the internet I would.

This is a well thought out and intelligent post, which the internets being what they are will be completely ignored.

sorry I didn't see this before I went to bed. It is a new design.

in fact it was a new design created for this derby and submitted without pandering or any ugly motives. It made a difference to me, anyway. He also submitted several of his earlier years' halloween puckers during the no-entry allowed period (for the rest of us) all of which he listed as resubbed unchanged, and then withdrew them after the new submissions started to appear.

Josephus wrote:Thanks for that last bit. :^)

I'd like to clarify some, if I can. First, this design has basically gotten no votes since early last evening when it fell out of the hotness. It isn't out there, blocking other people from getting their deserved votes for being, somehow more pure, I guess.

I drew this design because I want to win the derby! To expound, I think the way that I can best do that is if the derby is fair to everyone. If the tiger kitten is different from the housecat kitten, then it follows that any other large species of cat's kitten is also different. I didn't want to make a design that was essentially a copy of someone else's entry, because that would certainly be just cause to reject me, so I made a design with a house behind it, and the brother kitten also playing with part of the big gourd, and I made sure that the jackolantern differed from any otherwise similar entries. In addition, I really don't care for the shiny look, so I drew the kittens in a more realistic style- on the other hand, pumpkins are often waxed and polished, so they look shiny in real life. I didn't put much effort into the pumpkins anyway, which I regret, and left out any sort of candle lighting- after all, real jackolanterns usually use those little candles, not great big tall candles.

Anyway, I was as careful as I could be to not let my design have any rejectable reasons other than similarity to a previously made shirt with a kitten in a pumpkin. I figured, and still do, that if my design is rejected, then any designs of a similar nature ought to also be rejected. I believe that, if anyone is going to be inconsistent in the way that they treat entrants, they ought to have to face their inconsistency head on and not let it sneak around in the dark, pretending that it wasn't really inconsistent at all.

Despite all that, it doesn't look like they're going to reject any of the relevant designs or the five or six others that followed.

Maybe next time they'll follow their own precedents.

keep dreaming.

Okay, this much I cannot understand.

Everyone is complaining that this artist just recolored the cat and some objects after the previous similar shirt was rejected.

Yet NO ONE complained when I Love Candy just recolored/altered their main character and resubmitted.

If everyone is going to bombard someone for resubmitted a recolor, there should be just as many nay-sayers of the new shirt.

"Oh but the other shirt is more original"
Its a creepy kid on some pumpkins. Nobody in this derby is making any leaps and bounds on originality here.

So in short, enjoy the hypocrisy. My vote for this still stands.

In case you're sincere, maybe I can help. The 'I love candy' rejection was quite specific in that the character looked like a copyrighted character from a movie and seen on some posters touting that movie. He remade his character to NOT look like the character from the movie, while retaining the major theme of the design, creepy kid on some pumpkins.

This design, on the other hand, was rejected for being similar to previously seen shirts, and there is a whole class of shirts showing kittens in pumpkins. It is a generic theme being rejected here, not a specific resemblance to a specific character owned by a specific company. She remade her character into a kitten of a different kind of cat than her original submission. Still a kitten in a pumpkin, just different enough that she thought it passed their reason for rejection. A great many others apparently felt that this was a deliberate taunt of woot and the rest of the competitors.
Was it? Oh, maybe not. Maybe she didn't see that conceptually there is really no difference between her two entries. It isn't unlikely that she didn't really give it much thought at all. "rejected? Oh, I know- a tiger! I'll just put a tiger kitten in there instead, that'll be easy and even cuter than the housekitty."

Do you really not understand the difference? I like candy was rejected for potential copyright concerns. That issue was corrected and it was resubmitted. This design was rejected because this exact same concept (a cat in a pumpkin) has been done before(a lot). The resubmission did nothing to address this, changing the color of the cat does not change the fact that it's still a cat in a pumpkin.

I'll agree that there isn't much boundary pushing in terms of the Halloween theme in this derby, but this submission is downright cliché.

This is really well done. I love the illustration style. As for critique: the black wont show up very well on the asphalt (but if you wanted to go for subtle, that's ok), and I'm not really into skull designs (but that's just my personal taste). Maybe this style with some color added next time would be really spectacular. Good job.

Alrighty, addressing those that "countered" my previous statement.

First off, both entries were nothing more than recoloring and resubmitting. You can argue that oh, this one was because of copyright. Oh, this one is still more original. (I love candy) But you're telling me a creepy kid on pumpkins is something that isn't cliche or done before? I mean the previous entry was a compilation of two movie posters.

Both this entry and the other were addressing the problem of similar things being done. Yes, this is still a cat in a pumpkin. Yes, the other is still a kid ON a pumpkin. But because they changed an element, both have resubmitted a previously rejected piece.

And of course, the matter of if this artist is just messing around with everyone in their evil plot to make more money. Forgive me, I've seem to have forgotten this website as with all businesses is out to make money. And the artists want money too. Do you think we'd have nearly as many artists here if they werent compensated? Likewise, do you think woot isnt just trying to make money too? They sit back and let the community of shirt buyers ultimately decide. But suddenly everyone seems to have brought in some personal baggage, trying to make this contest seem like something more than it is. /rant

bluetuba wrote:Also as an addition I'm not trying to totally scaffolding on you Bass, I liked your X-Treme bear shirt in the National Parks derby, and certainly think you may have creative potential if you try here, but your comments in this thread are disturbing.

If you start cranking out the cute anime shirts in every derby because that's what you think the masses want, and hoping to make money you are going to make alot of enemies. Not to mention Ramyb and Seki are very very good at regurgitating the same "winning" formula over and over and over, it would indeed be hard to pander more successfully than they.

I find it "disturbing" the statement that I "will make enemies" if I draw anime for this tshirt site... I was unaware of the extreme, violent emotions people feel for the style here, it's pretty amazing. I see plenty of things I don't really like here and elsewhere, but I rarely feel the need to go verbally stabbing people over it.. I just move on to the next thing. There's plenty for everyone's tastes.

Also, if you have watched any of my other designs here, you'll note that I have not submitted any anime at all. This was a first for me, and what is most likely the last. If you read any of my posts, you would understand that it was a one-off, but it appears you did not read or fully understand that. I've avoided animu until now strictly because of this type of reception.

As for ramby and seki...pandering is what you call what their art, but obviously people like it. Otherwise they would not have the success they do. Whether that changes or not doesnt concern me. I'm merely pointing out that their success is due to the people who WANT their work, and want it very much, consistently. If you dont like that, I'm sorry but it's tough. There are other shirt sites out there with work on it that you may like more. There's certainly not a lack of non-anime cute stuff out there to buy. I like cute animu, but I also like everything else. I dont want ALL of one or the other.

And, if people are going to hate me now because I stated I would like to win the derby, then I'm sorry about that. I cannot lie and say that I'm here to gallantly flaunt my exploding bear art because it's some kind of fine, new, precious thing. It's just fun. The derbys are fun. I like doing art, I like seeing art, I like talking about art, I like getting paid for art I do. This place has the best of all worlds . (except some of the talking...) The derbys keep me busy and help me outstretch my abilities a bit from my norm.

Anyways, this is the last response I have to any negative feedback from here on out. I have seen that any response I make to messages of ill will only fuel poor behavior, and open me for yet more attacks. It's kind of a nasty cycle, and one that I SPIDERS! GET THEM OFF! to participate in. I'm here to draw and enter, with the hopes that you, the people, will like what I have. If you like my work, awesome. If you don't, there's plenty of good work here to choose from. There is no need to personally insult artists or members. The derby is supposed to be fun for all, so I want to keep it that way...at least for myself.

Thanks to all who commented for me, and wrote me personally. I sincerely appreciate your support, and I will try my best in the future.

You're confusing the issue. Lets look at the facts.

Fact: I like candy was rejected for possible copyright infringement.

Fact: This issue was fixed and the design resubmitted.

Fact: This shirt was rejected for being an over done theme(cat in pumpkin).

Fact: The reason for the originals rejection was not fixed and the design was resubmitted.

What are you not getting here?
Now I'm not arguing the originality of I like candy either and haven't voted for either shirt. But you go ahead and Google image search "creepy kid on pumpkin" and "cat in pumpkin" and see what you find.
