Re: Which Way?

You know why this deserves to win? Because it clearly depicts the dilemma of every artist. I wish that I could vote twice for one entry.

And if you want a better description than
"creme," it's sort of a beige color, but with a bit more pink to it. So it's not really pink enough for guys to be frightened by it.

Every time I really want one of your designs, Drakxxx, it falls out of the fog. I'm sorry, my vote must be the kiss of death for you.
I would love to own either version of this shirt.

Yeah, it's probably not a big deal for this design, but it's something to keep in mind for future designs. Asphalt and olive are both darker than their templates say they are, so black doesn't show up as well as you might expect.

In this case, it's fine that the buildings are sort of vague background elements, I agree.

Those are two different reasons Woot uses to reject. "Similar shirts esist" just means that similar shirts have been printed somewhere, some time. And the amount of similarity depends on Woot's opinion of the day. It can just be a similar theme, while the actual design is very different.

Not original work is whole different thing.

Pretty sure this is one of my favorite penguin shirts in the derby. It's different due to the placement - very nice.

I agree... but the thread started with the following post...

The hint was... the rejectionator would pounce on the fact that it was done before... I was just supporting the fact that the artwork and concept is pretty original.

Stercrazy wrote:[Mod says "snip"]

I really don't see that this is any different from any of the other "beady-eyed" artwork. And yeah, that fish is so slick that it seems to have shaved its fins off. Really, the only thing that makes her artwork any different from the other "cute" art that you hate so much is the muted palette.

Is her design good? Yes. It's a nice design. Is it "great"? Not to me. Setting this piece up as some sort of ideal that everyone else on Woot should aspire to is just stupid. You seem to be confusing opinion for fact.

It's hardly an "ideal", however it is certainly something that other people who traffic in similar work should take note of. Because this is done well, and other work is not. Which is why this is relevant.

I've already noted a number of reasons this is undeniably better than other junk woot has printed. Are they opinions? Sure. But they're based on truths. Art is about taking ones opinions and merging them with the truth, or taking the truth and creating your own view. While this has similarities to some popular work, it is nevertheless created with the designer's own style in mind, instead of being simply by the book. but more importantly, there is one feature that I want to point out that really sums the whole difference up.

Check out the eye. It's not the most advanced eye ever. It's not a triumph of all things optic. But the black void is logical for a fish. More important, consider the location of the light source and the shadow below the eye. These things give a tired and sorrowful bent to the fish's face. It's a simple application for a simple creature, but it carries a lot of emotional heft. This is something that many many many of the simple pieces woot prints simply do not have: emotion, or conceptual heft. They're lightweight pieces. They exist for cute and shine. This has both, yes, but the way it is put together makes it far more than that. And therein is the purpose of the commentary. I simply don't think you could make an educated comparison between the two and not come to identical findings.

Why is this still here?

Are you kidding?? As far as I can tell, you're doing extremely well in the Derbies in general. Yeah, okay, you haven't printed yet, but you just came in a very close 4th in the last Derby, and you've had multiple Honorable Mentions now. And you haven't even been here that long. Lots of artists here would LOVE to be in your shoes. And you're whining about "not doing well"? Wow.

Your designs usually impress me, but I gotta say that your attitude rarely does.

That is if you believe Yetis exist at all... If you don't it doesn't matter where they are. I just liked the Yeti character better, not necessarily because it fit better. I'm not really too wrapped up in the whole is it realistic factor considering the penguins are wearing clothes and the polar bear has painted a payment sign. It's a fun shirt I like it and I'll be buying it.

Thanks for the feedback... it is always welcome. I am still learning how to get my sketches represented on the computer. I seem to loose a lot of the feel and perspective when put on the screen.

I am told that scanning in the sketch and tracing it works better... I will try that method for my next couple attempts.

This one was primarily done as a response to a request on my box entry...

I agree completely. It has taken over a year for some very talented artists to print here and they weren't complaining the entire way. They simply kept submitting good, quality work and eventually grabbed a print. This continuous whining about not winning derby after derby by bass after only entering 6 derbies or so (and receiving HMs on more than one piece) really leaves a bad taste in my mouth and just screams 'entitlement issues'.

Well, thank goodness, people are only worried that the wings look like a knife, the dog looks gruesome, and it's panting. For a while I was worried that someone might ask exactly how the dogs had managed to fix those wings onto themselves (rivets? bolts? superglue?) - and how they're powering their flight...

But it could have been worse - it could have been penguins and kittens.

Thanks for comments everyone! After I'd finished this, I thought that if only I'd had time to think, I'd have made them all dalmatians instead. Or border collies.
