Wow! Though I can't help thinking that I've seen that dino illustration somewhere else, I love this. The details are fantastic and the colors really pop! Well done.

I think Woot went nuts with the daylight saving time. How the time change affects the voting is certainly beyond my imagination/

Zyphron wrote:sure the Kid is falling
and the moon is there
and ET is there

in the Derby shirt, it implies that the Kid crashed into what looks to be the moon, or that the moon was really made of Glass or something that is close and can shatter.
the cape, the Kid, and ET are falling in the derby shirt.

in the Shirt you found off google ET Threw the Kid off the Bike and is flying away in the Light of the moon

both have shared elements but Both are Different Entirely.

should we just point out that there are countless "official" ET shirts that were printed....

The fact that there are countless shirts works against this. For Woot to say "similar shirts exist" they don't need to be identical, they just need to be similar, and the more there are, the less likely Woot is to want to print another shirt with the same theme. Woot has, in the past, rejected shirts with dandelions because they felt there were too many dandelion-themed shirts elsewhere. But none were exactly the same.

I'm not saying that it will or should be rejected. That's up to Woot, and I'm terrible at guessing what they will do. But it's possible that they could decide that ET had been overdone on shirts.

Misskari wrote:Just say no to Comic Sans! ;) Er, text in general, I guess.

I agree...PLEASE just say no to Comic Sans MS! Seeing that font on a shirt makes something inside me die a little. Okay, slight exaggeration, but still, if you do another design with text, it will look a lot better if you either find a font that's less overused, or write the text by hand. Overused fonts that will automatically look bad in a design include Comic Sans MS, Arial, Arial Black, Impact, Curlz MT, Times New Roman, and possibly Helvetica, among others.

(Sorry about the double post...I thought I had posted in the wrong topic and got really confused for a minute there, and then the edit option went away.)

Personally, as an aviation professional I love these type of designs and I'm well beyond 10. Also not a boy. Although I agree it's been printed before I gave up a looooong time ago trying to foresee what woot would consider a "similar shirts exist" design.

Oh quit your whining...

It is a funny shirt, and I didnt even see the "FAIL" at first. I did actually laugh out loud once the image displayed.

+1, and I think it is well done. Who cares if it is or isnt a ripoff of something else. That's the whole point of a parody.

Good job.

Re: Fail

You know, I think swirly halftones look neat, it's just kind of lost its novelty and now I don't really get it. I can see using them to simulate glow, but here I'm not certain what they're meant to add to the design. It's just gratuitous swirly stuff.

See:

AND
http://s3.amazonaws.com/wootdesigncontestentries/922349/The_last_unicorn-gkd8o8-s.jpg
And I know this isn't by him but
http://shirt.woot.com/Derby/Entry.aspx?id=32326

It's all in that same vein. I get it, it's aesthetic, but it's become a bit generic so it's lost that appeal for me. Now it seems a bit gimmicky, and it doesn't fit with the silliness of the shirt. Which... well, as pop culture references go, just ok. The art is well done, and there's not doubt there's skill there, I just don't think the composition is particularly creative or cohesive in how it's presented. Obviously plenty of people like it, though.

The original was just short for me, but this one has my vote. The kiwis, in particular, look much more defined: well done.

Just one question--how do you effectively use halftones? Newbie here.

Print them on a blank page, wad it up, pile your tinder all around, with larger sticks ready to add later, then strike a match and apply to the center of the halftone! As it begins to light the tinder around it, start gradually adding larger pieces until you have a conflagration!

I love that song. And it's not far out in left field at all. It might have even subconsciously inspired the design. I pictured the conversation as:

"I have to do this."
"I know. I love you."
