I like the look on his face; seems like that's what flying should feel like.

The olive is pretty dark, so black doesn't show up as well as it does on the template. You've pretty much taken care of that by highlighting your black lines with the green that should show up pretty well.

I like the actual olive better than the template olive.

Maybe I will try the pre-derby threads the next time, though not every of us have the time to actually make design in weekdays.

And thank you for the kind words. Never hurts to hear someone making positive comments about your work.

Hang in there. It might take a little while for you to figure out what catches attention, but I think you'll get there.

The funny thing about Adder's comment about children was that until I read it, I didn't realize I had that much of a bias. Some shirts with kids have appealed to me, but it has to be just right. Maybe it's because it's only appealing if you think that it's how you were as a kid, and if you don't empathize, it doesn't work. If it's a non-person, you don't have to empathize.

I'm not asking woot to censor all dissent. I'm asking woot to remove posts that contain hate and attacking comments. Call it censoring if you want, but this world could do with a little less hatred, of which this site has more than its fair share.

Heheh. Sometime ago I decided to go grad school, and now it's taking up most of my time . BUT!!! I'm secretly taking an art class (Drawing 100 ) to sharpen me drawing skillz. Hopefully I'm getting better. And the class is really fun. Maybe I shoulda been an art major instead, hahah.

The point is that simply searching a bit harder would have shown all of the above shirts that already exist. And you may not have intentionally done it, but you did it nevertheless. It's frustrating that your design, which as mean as it sounds is completely unoriginal, is taking the place of other designs that don't look nearly identical to shirts that already exist.

Not naming any names, but some people could learn a lot from one Bootsboots piece compared to all of their own.

[Mod says "snip"]

I really don't see that this is any different from any of the other "beady-eyed" artwork. And yeah, that fish is so slick that it seems to have shaved its fins off. Really, the only thing that makes her artwork any different from the other "cute" art that you hate so much is the muted palette.

Is her design good? Yes. It's a nice design. Is it "great"? Not to me. Setting this piece up as some sort of ideal that everyone else on Woot should aspire to is just stupid. You seem to be confusing opinion for fact.

Wouldn't the burden be on the voters, since all reading this forum have been informed of the design's proliferation, to make sure that an "unoriginal" shirt doesn't stay in the fog?

The burden is on Woot, because if they printed this shirt, they would be the ones who have to deal with any potential lawsuits over infringement. I'm not saying that the companies responsible for the other shirts would have a case if they did try to pursue it, but it was always my understanding that is the reason why the no similar shirts rule exists (and, less importantly, because woot claims to sell "original" shirts).

This is closest version (so far anyway!) to the original design I imagined when starting to create this design... thought I would get closer to that conception and see how it does.

So it's ok to steal something and try to sell it. It's just not ok to buy the stolen thing?

I think the voters are absolutely culpable, but that doesn't remove any blame from the submitter.

I'm really very sad that the origial wa rejected, and more sad that I don't think I wold buy this, and thus can not vote for it if following my voting code. See, the yeti seemed like he would be the kind of guy to provide a nice service to the penguins. The polar bear seems like he is maliciously taking the clueless penguin's fish, then throwing them to their deaths. Sorry about the rejection, man.

I'd bet that a lot of voters never read the threads or just skim through. I've seen entries that were direct copies of already-printed designs that got a number of votes before Woot got around to rejecting. So those voters either didn't know or didn't care.

A lot of what people generalize as "hate" are comments rooted in a context that makes them less hateful and more general voicing of displeasure. I think woot does a decent job of deleting baseless attacks, and the ones they leave up have (if you do some research) plenty of reasoning behind them. They are less "hate" than they are an extension of a long, long series of critiques that grew weary over time.

I think a good place to start would be for people to stop generalizing so many posts as "hate", as for the most part they are not rooted in genuine hatred for anyone. Even a lot of the harsh ones need to be taken in their context.

Everyone keeps harping on originality. Why? Its not like the same cutesy (make me want to throwup) animal dropings aren't in the fog every week. It is a great picture and a great idea but because its not strapped to a cat, dog, or god forbid a penguin, everyone wants to rip it to shreds. You got my vote and if it wins i might just buy 2. >:P

It's superior at a conceptual level, I think. The focus isn't on the Our Movie Genre cuteness! of the animals, but on the entire construction of the design. It tells a story. It's funny, and it's kind of touching. It's cute, but not cloyingly so. These are all subtle differences that add up to a design that's a hell of a lot better than most "beady eyed critter" designs.

I think because people want to see woot be consistent with its rules. Designs have been rejected for similarity for far less in the past.
