Well, in my case (as a newbie) I put up a couple different versions of mine in order to try and get a feel for what works around here. I think maybe once I've been here for a while and feel more comfortable in the community and with my designs that I won't have the need to do that.

Also this isn't incidental text, it's kind of imperative to the design.

Copyright issues will continue with this, I'm afraid - Diet Coke is sold as Coke Light up and down Latin America and in other parts of the world - and abbreviation Coke is protected.

Re: Sky Fishing

this is a cool looking shirt, i just don't understand what it has to do with flight. i mean it has fishing, which is great. and a floating (magic?) island farm scene. but i am just not making the connection. not that it's required either, because plenty of shirts have printed and been so far off theme its ridiculous. i am just surprised there hasn't been a discussion on this one.

Two things:
First, can someone please explain the meaning behind this? I have been staring at it for five minutes and still do not get it.

Second, the wrinkle in the shirt template you use made it look like the 'god' sign had a mustache. I was rather confused for a second why they did not match up. :/

i really like the concept and squirrel/flying machine, but i don't care for the tree. it looks like an afterthought and doesn't add to the composition, IMO... but the idea is really cute.

The land is floating through the air and the whale/fish are flying nearby. Flight has been illustrated. There's really no argument to be made.

Submitting more than one version either at the same time (like your first two) or when your original design is not doing as well as you wanted (ie, your third design) makes sense; version 2 of Battle of Flightless Birds was submitted when version 1 was in 5th place, iirc. This worked last week for Shigwarm when his Beetles shirt was in the fog because v.2 was significantly different (different shirt color, extension of the joke), though it's hard to point to that now since those designs ended up being rejected anyway. In Drakxxx's case, version one kept falling (or maybe just being displaced) after version 2 went up, which suggests that they were not different enough and/or that they ARE splitting the vote. Some people are only voting for one either way, but some people might have just decided that version one was "good enough" and voted for it anyway without v2 being there.

This is mostly speculation, but I don't think it's necessarily wrong.

I've been thinking about this since it went up, and I think the point is that there's nothing to "get". You either like it aesthetically or you don't; a title like this makes you think there must be something more, and maybe there is, somewhere external to the design itself. But generally, no, I don't think there's anything to "explain here".

The average person wants things to make sense or have purpose, though, so I doubt I could wear this without being asked "what's your shirt all about?" and then being met with frustration when the best I can offer is the title.

For some people, that's a good thing.

i am not trying to argue, so don't be a jag. i am simply stating there was no flight to me.

if someone drew a cat with clouds around it would that be flight?

if david blaine was levitating would that be flight? he is perceived to be floating, so by your statement it would count as flight.

regardless, i said i like the design, i am just stating it is weird the usual haters aren't creating a storm, but then again its not ramy or seki so they aren't fueled with as much hatred.

anyway, congrats on the design, i still like it.

Re: Fail

This is a TERRIBLE rejection. Why is that stupid jetpack shirt still not rejected. It's way more similar to already printed shirts than this one is.

And that example that someone else posted as similar is NOT. In that one, ET stole the bike and pushed elliot off, in this one, they both crash into the moon, not similar at all. And as for your similar colors argument, it's a freakin' moon and sky, what other colors were they supposed to use?

You all just don't like this shirt and wanted it rejected. Well, you got your wish, now go tattle on the jetpack shirt.

I have no interest in arguing either, but I wanted to jump in and make a point that I've made many times in the past in my own defense, and which a lot of people seem to ignore (whether selectively or altogether)- Woot has a write-up for a reason. They give the themes names so that there is a general blanket under which designs should potentially fall, but then there is a much longer description to explain what they are looking to see with a theme. Sometimes it's extremely specific, and they mention things that will not be allowed. Other times, they make it very clear that they will allow any interpretation of the theme (ex. harvest)- and anything encompassed by the writeup is fair game, and always has been. In all my time on woot, I can't remember any rejections for being off topic on anything that fell under the description, even if the connection to the name of the theme wasn't obvious. It is usually very easy to look at the description and figure out what they are looking to allow. This week, they stated:

"If it moves through the air, or at least wants to move through the air, it's fair game for this week's Derby"

The fish look like they are moving through the air to me. They don't have to be flying. In fact, if it was a fish looking at the air, it would be on theme. There's no reason for anyone to get on patrickspens's case for this entry, because I believe that it is exactly what woot described in the writeup. People will always get on my case and I know that, but in this case there is no reason for anyone to question this entry at all. Just because people might have made a fuss if I had posted it, doesn't mean they should make a fuss if anyone else does. It's just irrelevant.

Anyway, great design and congrats on fogging. I hope it prints

Aesthetically I do think it's a shame it got rejected. IMHO it looked great and made me laugh; I would have considered buying it. I can only speak for myself, but my point of contention was the obvious reference to ET, not any similarities to existing shirts. I just feel uneasy about the use of copyrighted properties, and would rather play it safe than sorry.

Just because you perceive flight as no less than an airplane with squiggly lines behind it doesn't mean there's not a broader concept to flight.
