Re: Stop Texting

this is my fav for this derby so far - i liked it right from the sketch u posted before the derby opened. right from the getgo, i didn't like the whole geeze thing at the end, though - feels a little unnecessary to me and i don't know a single person who says or texts geeze (guess it's just not common in NYC?) but the rest is just perfect!

btw, is the 1 at the end of pay attention!!1 intentional or did u just lift your hand off of the shift key too soon when doing the multiple exclamation points? (i do that all the time, which is why i ask)

again, it's hilarious and not at all offensive if you ask me since it's really just having fun with the pilots and not at all mocking the unfortunate events that others are bothered by.

Not that it matters because it's already been rejected, but is there a reason Florida is almost the same length as the entire country?

Re: Procrastinate

It looks less like a propaganda poster to me and more like one of those despair posters (you know, the ones that are parodies of the motivational posters). The illustration just doesn't seem iconic enough to be propaganda.

I echo that the design might be too dark to print well but . . . all the above being said, my annoyance level with this entry is fairly low as far as controversial designs go, and I do think the cracking world looks cool.

First thing i thought of too
i was half expecting to see a thick black rimmed border
shirt color is close enough that'll have to do

Case in point: if someone desirable asks you out, you should NOT grab them and shout, "Ohmigod! I've been doodling our names together in my notebook for SO LONG! Yes! Yes! YES!" Instead maintain your apathy, and shrug carelessly as you say, "Sure. Whatever." and all will be well.

Hard not to love this. Dig the straight-up propaganda art style, riff, and the reference to the trashmen puts it over the top.

There are way too many great entries this week.

Re: Procrastinate

ive already said i think the typography should be changed cause its not mimicking a classic propaganda poster, but saying this doesnt fall under "the everyday problems of human interaction, the unwritten rules that help us all get along" (thats what the derby introduction defines the topic as) is stupid.

procrastination is something most people do, and it affects others. the unwritten rule may be to not do it, however, that doesnt mean arguing for it should disqualify it from the derby. youre just taking the other side, much like the US would make propaganda posters against communism, and the soviet for it.

bottom line is it is definitely propaganda, and whoever said people needed to look up the definition of propaganda was the one that needed to do it him/herself

Misskari wrote:May I ask why you chose to have it not be immediately apparent? Not trying to challenge you, I'm simply curious.

No its fine. Several reasons. One is because I don't want the eye to jump straight to that blue spot on your shirt. I want the text to catch the eye first and then onto the gas mask, down to the source of the pollution then onto the last words so that it reads in a Z pattern like reading. Whether that works for everyone or not I don't know but I like it.

Next is I really didn't want to do a BLUE bird. In the original I made him green, like a Twitter infect canary or something but that was eating up too many colors and called attention to itself too much. So I just made everything blue. Even a gray bird is blue in blue light right?

Next is that everything is blue for a saturated look. Like polluted anything, it takes on a very monochromatic tone. I would have gone complete monochromatic but did want a slight separation between the man, bird, and the toxic vapors. And BROWN should not be escaping your mouth. If it is, you know its not good.

Some designs really only have one way to color them. Only one shirt color works and so on. This could be on a lot of different colors and if it was a poster, I would have done some bold colors and huge contrasts but it IS a shirt. And even though I want the popular vote, I don't make things just for everyone else. I want to want my own shirt.

But why blue? Well, what color is Facebook, Twitter and MySpace? BLUE. And ShirtWoot, but woot's a cool place.

Too much blue? Maybe, but that fits the theme of just TOO MUCH INFO for me. Hope that explains my thoughts. I completely understand if anyone has a different opinion on the colors. I could go with several different versions but then it just becomes a nightmare. I hope you like it anyway. Thanks.

banzaaiii wrote:it is propaganda for everyday life though. it tells you to procrastinate, and gives a reason. dont see how this is any different from other entries. it may not be an unwritten rule of society, but a lot of propaganda is done in order to create unwritten laws of society...

Just because it not "different from other entries" does not make this one on topic. There appears to be widespread lack of topicality in the derby.

I agree that I don't see the topic here, yes it talks about promoting an idea (procrastinate!), but I don't really see a propaganda style. It seems very much like a slogan shirt, with an exploding planet graphic, as opposed to a propaganda shirt with text used to augment the design.

hmmm... the cat's face seems to be at a different angle than the top of his head (from the ears), it's throwing this off for me quite a bit.

One of my kitties only has three legs now, but was in a cast for quite a while before we got to that point. so I heartily approve of the image in general. :V
