Re: You're So Vain

Because you got the song stuck in my head, I leave you with it. And my vote, of course!

You walked into the party
Like you were walking onto a yacht
Your hat strategically dipped below one eye
Your scarf it was apricot
You had one eye in the mirror
As you watched yourself gavotte
And all the girls dreamed that they'd be your partner
They'd be your partner, and
You're so vain
You probably think this song is about you
You're so vain
I'll bet you think this song is about you
Don't you? Don't you?

Hahahahahaha. Since when has woot cared that its designers respect the derbies? The worst offenders print nearly weekly.

joelterrific wrote:Ok, so these are hard ones. I'm not going to claim to not see the common punchline here, but I agree the execution is considerably different. I think of it like two comedians vamping on the same theme, but both put their own spin on it. Of course we'll never know if Patrick sat down expressly to re imagine GL's work (I sorta doubt it. It's not like this idea can't be arrived at by someone with a sense of humor), but I can be relatively sure this isn't infringing on GL's art. As we've said before ideas are not easily copyrightable, the execution is.

All that said, I could see people not voting because they feel like it's been regurgitated. That's not different than someone choosing at a joke they've heard a thousand times.

So sokowa can resub the fishbowl and it won't get rejected?

Re: Team Esther

So, to sum up we have:
no shirt comp
text
copyright infringement
use of a photo
Off theme (no one mentioned this!)

I'll add gradients to the list- one of the veteran designers can correct me on that if I'm wrong.

Any others? I think this has to be nearly a record I'm pretty sure he's managing to break every rule.

Sadly, the fact that it has never happened before is why you are having trouble now. You have to have made a purchase from any of woot's various sites before you can vote for shirts.

Wow, this is great CMDixon. Great work with being super creative, and making a shirt that's kind of gender neutral, no pun intended. Lovely illustration to boot.

"Every" rule would depend on if it has more than 6 colors or not I think.

Well, there's always next derby for him to incorporate that! Since he's submitted this awful joke 2 derbies in a row, I think we can count on seeing it next time.
So if he just amps up the color, I'm sure he'll accomplish his goal!

xazothia wrote:They already banned video games - try emailing woot with your thoughts if you're serious about it.

There's only three existing-IP parody shirts in the reckoning right now, and only two of those are from Derbies. The fact that parodies haven't been printing since video games were banned is enough to tell me that further restrictions over such aren't really necessary.

I doubt it would make a difference if I wrote to Woot. People love them some pop culture on here. If they want it, who am I to change it? :\ I just don't have to give it my vote.

mrwednesday wrote:I think people are missing my point so I will clarify. The bird with the worm is about 45 degrees tilted away from the plane of the shirt to give it a 3D look. The shadow, however, is completely parallel with the plane of the shirt. It would be better if the shadow have the same 3D perspective that the bird does.

Darn you, now that you've said that, I cannot enjoy this shirt on the same level as before... Blast.

Still, though, excellent concept. Work on the execution just a bit.

Not a fan of stark white shirts, but I think this might have to be my first if it prints. The detail on the head and chest feathers is really beautiful.

That said, I would definitely buy it if it were on a darker shirt.
