I really like the way you did those wings. "New Beginning" refers to pollination, yes? The head doesn't strike me as hummingbird-ish, but I still like the look of it.

Draug wrote:Ah, if only this didn't have that boxed effect, it would be a lovely shirt...

I would have liked to see the lines on the sides broken up a bit more. I tried to use the silhouettes of trees on each side, but they just didn't look right, so I wound up submitting the design without them. I'll have to keep working at it to see what I can come up with.
Thanks!

After seeing my share of devistating forest fires in California and northern AZ its always nice to see the renewal that follows.

For no good reason, I thought it was a kinder, gentler (quieter) woodpecker. Which fits the theme, too.

Awesome does not begin to describe this shirt. Simple, but great.

At first, I actually wasn't so sure about the color of the shirt, but I now believe it may be the best choice...Kind of gives it a chalkboard sort of feel...Very cool. I'm very hopeful to see this print.

Nice. A fire burned through about 2 miles from my house. I drive past it on my way to work, still startling to see, 3 months later.

(Not sure why the design would be awkward on girls... I must be missing something.) Glad you like it, thanks!

Eh, I'm probably just overthinking it. I thought it might end up looking something like this (scroll right on the picture to see what I mean)

although it seems the size and shape of your design are actually closer to this. (right again)

eHalcyon wrote:I recall people saying that Edgar's watercolour-ish halftone design (I think it was just called "Air") came out very well. Since this design is only a single colour on black (and white at that), I'd be a little more optimistic. It's usually more difficult to print fine details on black because you need an underlayer of white, but that's not the case this time given the derby limitations.

As an owner of "Air", I can attest that it came out brilliantly.

As for this design, I think it'd print fine. However, I do think the design is somewhat boring conceptually, if well executed.

"Plants rising from ruin", though fitting for this derby, is a fairly done to death motif, and I'm leaning more towards designs like "Reboot" that have a more compelling visual.

This is really really cool, but, is the black border supposed to be around the image in the shirt comp?

BootsBoots wrote:I would like to point out that on dictionary.com, definition number 5 for "renew" is "to revive."

Yeah. That's right. What? What? You can suck it, Adder. ;)

Thanks for some explanation Boots, it really helps to tie the design to the theme. This would fly really well with the indie music crowd, which thrives where I live (Austin, Live Music Capital). Cool design, and if it doesn't make it, I'd love to see you add color and resub it elsewhere. I think music people would really dig it.

I'm utterly mortified at the crassness to which the sanctity of "Iz R Cute Kitteh" has been subjected to.
What has the woot come to? Heathens!

..... when it prints I'll need two.

Rules about text aside, this design is really cool! Magic and alchemy fans will definately get a kick out of it. Nice work with the texturing and shading work on the bg as well. Artists here always manage to stun me with their nifty Photoshop brush-fu.

the box is what kills it for me. I'm sure others feel the same. take the time to quickly resub with it flowing instead of the restricted feeling and i'm sure it'll go farther.

Re: Man, I Really Love Dinosaurs

Cool illustration, but really, really difficult to link to the theme without the explanation. Even when I read about the design it's sort of hard to understand. But, I'm not super clever with visuals, so mleh, jokes on me!

lol. i agree with that statement. Even in a size S it's gonna look huge. Maybe it could be oriented on the design should have been oriented on either the left or right side. Either way, a very effective shirt.

Re: Peyote Bird

Please vote for this one (for some reason the other version won't get deleted when I try to fix it).

This is based on the Lakota tribe interpretation of the water bird, otherwise known as the Peyote Bird.

I spoke to a Lakota Translation forum as to a proper name for this piece (however, I know that woot's page would mess up the link should I use the characters in the titles I was given) so I must thank mikekat39 for his insight and translations. I was torn between two translations:

"I restore the whole world for them":
Makȟásitomni kiŋ Wičháwečiyutȟeča

or "Holy Peyote Bird":
Uŋȟčéla Ziŋtkála Wakȟáŋ

I quite like the first over all, however the second is straight forward. Thank you all for looking.

Re: Rinse Cycle

Messed up the first upload... oops.

I am still fairly new to this, this is my second idea for this derby. The most common example of recycling now is laundry, and what better feeling of renewal than a nice set clean clothes, am I right?

Re: Rewriting The Stars

Destiny is written in the stars. This little boy is making his own destiny by "rewriting the stars".

This is a resub. My comp pic for the first entry showed a black box around the design, which was not supposed to be part of the design. Also, I've done a little editing to make the whole design not quite so square.

I'll pull the other submission if this one takes off. Thank you for all the votes on the first submission!
