This is what I have so far (still need to clean it up a bit/add detail). It's a biologist's nightmare that's slowly mutating into a monster. Any feedback you have would be welcome.

I like it...but I feel like there's a panel missing? Not sure, just a bigger jump between the second and third than there is between the first and second.

Hmmm that's a good point--maybe I'll add another panel. Thanks!

Man, fantasy art is so much more sophisticated now. I wonder if Melissa Benson still gets work.

Haha, I still play magic...But I was thinking of someone doing a Nightmare beast and I think it would be a really nice idea.

This is the sketch. The plumber will be 4 colors, the monsters will be just black and white (with more details, of course). Please opine.

Unlike "Spicy Italian Meatball" (which I bought and I like, BTW), this shirt isn't a blatantly obvious Mario Brothers reference. Without seeing Mario's face, you can't really tell that this is a Mario Brothers reference, until you figure out that the big nasty monster on the left is Bowser, the ape on the right is Donkey Kong... and then it all falls into place.

Not only that, but the characters all have your distinctive style, instead of looking like they're straight out of my Wii.

So, I like it and I think it's certainly original enough.

Truthfully, I like it as is. I'm a big fan of rough sketches. I love how it's a subtle reference.

I really...really detest heather gray. And I don't mean that harshly but I personally associate the color/texture with sweatpants, cheap t-shirts and laziness. I wish woot had silver, this shirt would look great on that. But as far as your shirt I would definitely stick with white or asphalt. You'd really have to sell me on the white though.

Sketch for MSCE! I don't think I'm going to take this any further. It was fun to do, but I wouldn't personally wear a sheep with mutant phantom sheep.

I like how the flying turtle is more turtle like. You should keep that going on Bowser (he's a big spiky turtle/dragon half breed) make his head look less snout like and more like a snapping turtle or something.

Might be too late to make the change, but did you consider having the child hug the teddy?

Great concept, and both the bear spirit and the nightmare look wonderfully spectral!

mrwednesday wrote:I agree. If you had the bear seep out from the clutched teddy to the right it would still leave the proper separation between the two spirits. I think it would also solve the problem that they look a little static right now. Some way to add impending interaction or give the design the feeling of motion would go a long way.

all good comments. I started with the kid holding the teddy. Then I decided to spread the design out a bit so it wasn't completely focused in the center (and free up the kid's face). Now i set it up where there's a left side of evil, right side is good and the child in the center. Also in a small way it represents the teddy watching over the child in no matter the circumstance. The toy doesn't have to be held or cared for for him to protect his loved one.
Ya, been working on this for a while so I had a lot of time to think about it ;). I really do wish i knew how to do this not at a glacial speed :/ (or do simpler ideas).

Oh man, I have an idea for a shirt and my schedule just freed up so I can try to finish it for tomorrow.

But I have a question... what's worse for you?

-A shirt with a lot of ink on it that covers 6-10 inches of the center of the shirt.

-Or a design on white shirt?

Since I see both complaints a lot I wanted to know what people thought. My design can go either way. =[ Or maybe I'll get lucky and figure some way out of this rock in a hard place.

LOLOLOLOLOLOL, Oh man, even I'm not that cruel. Though it'd be hilarious to hide things in a white shirt like that... ponders.

Edit: HA HA HA, would hiding things in a white shirt with white ink make up for it being a white shirt in the first place? Woot would probably not be amused by having to print white on white.

I'm really hoping that humor and punnery don't play up too much in this derby. I'd love to see something that draws from Lovecraft's "Rats in the Walls."
It's so perfect for the stuff of nightmares, you could make a depiction inspired by any part of that story and it'd be fantastic.

If I were an artist, I'd do it myself. Unfortunately, though, I'm terrible with 2D design.

rglee129 wrote:That's OK. I appreciate the honesty (and the irony!). Video game shirts generally bug me, too. But what bothers me about them is when they seem more like unlicensed merchandise than original artwork.

I was hoping that this design would be generally considered a cool interpretation, especially with the nod to Goya. I saw a collection of his prints in Mobile, AL recently and have been wanting to do a design based on the sleep of reason one since. But I guess with recent events, any Mario shirt is still seen as a sell-out kind of pandering thing.

I wish woot would make the no video games ban permanent. Otherwise I feel like if I don't go the video games route, I'll lose to folks that do. BUT if I do use a video game reference, it's pandering to votes. It's a lose/lose.

(edit: Not that it's ALL about winning. But, of course, winning is a big part of it...)

Thanks for the thoughtful explanation. I totally see where you're coming from and I wholeheartedly agree that your design is not simply unlicensed merchandise. But you're also right that, at least to me, any Mario shirt has a faint whiff of pandering at this point. I guess I'm just all Mario-ed out.

That said, it really is a fantastic drawing which I suspect will do very well. Good luck!

I too agree with all that is said above. I worry that we'll have a ton of game shirts since the ban was lifted. And if I don't try to do it "out of the gate" any other designs will be ignored. After spending about 10 hrs on my entry this week I'll most likely be kicking myself wondering why I didn't just make the ghosts some sort of game character or pop culture reference. /shrug.

Nice work on the dreamy feel to the characters. You really nailed the transparency appearance effect.

Just me being picky, but the lump in the body of the monster is a little distracting... feels like it should be slightly smoother.
