First of all, I'm not an artist, so feel free to disregard anything I say. It does look less like a certain Hasbro toy without the graphic on its rear. I like the concept, but I'm not sure that this shirt color does it justice. Perhaps it's the color of the landscape in the background? I wish it would pop more.

I didn't see any shirts like this, so despite my limitations, here it is. Anything stupid I did that I can fix in 90 minutes?
Color may not be exactly asphalt as background yet, but that's what it will be on.

The child nudity thing bothers me, even with the censorship square, so it might not be very popular. Also, black hardly shows on asphalt, so the faces are not going to be very visible unless they're all smiling big.

This is an actual nightmare I have had a few times.

It never occurred to me that anyone would think the implied nudity offensive. guess I'm a bit naive. I'll think about this more before I decide whether to submit it.

As far as the faces go, I intend them to be somewhat dim, since they are in the audience. The eyes and teeth will be white, and with a bit of dark red in the mouths that are open, it isn't only black.

Yeah- the whole naked kid deal would probably get it removed as it can be seen as a bit pervy. Interesting problem of how to get this (fairly universal) nightmare onto a shirt. Good Luck.

The shirt is interesting at first glance. But- really freakin dark after looking at it a while. The bowels of hell are swallowing up this little girl (who is really hard to see). If there was a reference to some triggering event (like a book or scary doll) it might not seem so over the top. Just my two cents. I wouldn't vote for it at this point, as it comes off as a demonic tattoo.

It looks great! This derby is right up your ally. The only thing I'd say is lose the shards (of glass? cloth?) coming off the sides. They work on the bottom, but not as much on the sides.

So basically anything that features something bad happening or a scary character is going to be on-topic here, regardless of whether there's anything specifically related to bad dreams?

I'm kind of wary about this derby because you can pretty much do anything with the disclaimer that someone could have a dream like this. So if I have a Watermelon smashing Gallagher shirt I've been working on I could sub it and say this is Gallagher's bad dream. If I have a picture of the wolfman I can sub it and say someone could have a nightmare about the wolfman. Heck, I could sub a field of pretty roses and say that's my nightmare. It really has nothing to do with nightmares other than me saying it does in the title or description.

I already see a ton of shirts I would say have nothing to do with nightmares. I kind of hope woot puts the hammer down in enforcing this derby as being ABOUT nightmares and the act of dreaming specifically to be fair to people that are handicapping themselves by following the theme.

That's my point exactly. If just something "scary" is good enough, the people who are conforming to what the derby is actually about are at a big disadvantage. I'm probably going to wait to see how the rejections roll before I commit to a design. While I think it's a bad idea, if they just let anything "scary" get by without it being tied to dreams, why would I make it harder on myself by following the theme? I mean at that point you can just draw a cool looking scary thing or something bad happening to someone/something and it's much easier and more likely to get votes.

ya. I was thinking to myself what makes this different than "emergency" or "panic" or any number of other words that woot has used as a theme. The difference is that nightmares usually have to do with some sort of dream state. Now it doesn't have to be the normal "someone sleeping in a bed and something is happening" there are other ways to take it and be creative. Also, a play on words is appropriate I suppose. Ideally it would be nice to flip to a derby and without seeing the theme know what it is about. That'll never happen nor will most of these get rejected because they can be twisted to fit into some formula and IMO woot will play safe.

The description of the derby says "You're in a nightmare. While you're there, look around for material for this week's Derby." I think it's pretty clear that they aren't specifically looking for someone sleeping. It's "while you're there," as in, already in the nightmare. I don't think you need to wait to take that interpretation, because that's what they asked for.

I'm with no1 on this one- every derby, some people interpret the rules as being strict and try to deliver exactly what they think it means. Other people are more lax and take the rules as more of a point of inspiration.

Woot has pretty much never actually been strict about enforcing the rules, theme-wise. And in my opinion, this week isn't even particularly bad so far- I see the theme on all but two of the entries.

I see more reason to crack down on halftones than on off-theme entries, at the moment ;)

The problem is literally anything can be a nightmare if someone says it is, which is also the problem with themes like this one. I'm not singling out specific entries or artists simply because I think the problem is with the theme and instructions and not necessarily the people who are subbing entries that they think are on topic. I have no problem with looser interpretations of themes, but these kind of themes verge on "anything goes" in which case they should just make it anything goes. The examples they give are of very common nightmares and the theme is nightmares, but will they allow something that someone could have a nightmare about with no real ties in the design to the act of sleeping? If they will then this isn't a nightmare derby but a "bad things" derby. To me it's just an issue of what is woot going for and what will they allow. That's why I'm personally waiting, because I have an idea or two for nightmares that would have an uphill climb, but I could literally fit in a half dozen entries (and resubs) if it's a "bad things" derby.

I'm hoping that woot interprets the theme as bad things that can reasonably thought of as nightmares like the examples given or more obscure bad things provided that there's some connected with a sleeping person in the shirt. Of course nothing as wordy as that will ever get enforced...

if i were a woot god (alas, i am not), i would allow three types of nightmares:

1. "traditional" nightmares, like josephus's nekkid-public-speaking; these wouldn't need other signs that a nightmare is taking place, because you already know what it is
2. nontraditional nightmares, like "adder wearing a kawaii tee"; these would need something analogous to a picture of someone sleeping/dreaming to indicate a nightmare is taking place
3. miscellaneous commentary on the word "nightmare" like a horse, etc.
