Do the half tones count as different colors? I have wanted to do this before, but I was afraid that I would put me over the 6 color limit.

Then you need a shirt like this to wear on valentine's day, and you can commiserate for all the other people that feel like you on that day;) One day, you won't, one day!: )

Much thanks Jaiyla!

And thanks to everyone for their votes and support on it. Was a bit of a letdown that it went from 2 days in the fog to 17th place. But...I really truly appreciate everyone's votes and kind comments, thanks so much!

the halftones themselves still have to be solid colors. If you transition from one color to another all those transitions are colors too. Trick with correctly use halftones is that they look like a gradient base on how tightly they are space apart and that they gradually fade out to another color, thus faking the soft gradient. Can't make them TOO small though. It's all a balance.

mrwednesday wrote:I don't disagree with what you have said but with your interpretation. You've rightly stated that the crux of the issue is that the design stands alone without the EKG. It is an add on and not required for understanding, that is to say it isn't necessary.

That is where I take issue. Yes, many have said that an EKG is an EKG, but think of it this way. Why a halftoned EKG? Why is the EKG only emanating from the right side of the design? The EKG is added to the design for aesthetics. For the way it looks. And we have all seen the way this looks when tgentry did it.

Didn't you say his EKG was incorrect anyway? Tegenry's was not, so he didn't do Tegenry's EKG, he did his own incorrect one. Therefore, in your rationalization with the robot, he did not rip off tgentry.

Why would the EKG only emanating from the right side of the design? You really need to ask that? Ok I'll bite. The heart is traditional represented on the left side of our chest, even tho it technically is in the middle. So why would he put the heart on the right side and the EKG coming from the left side? He would get flamed to be damned if he put the heart on the wrong side.

Why is it halftones? It's Ramby, again do you really need to ask? He always does halftones so again, I don't see that ripping of tegentry at all.

You should stick to maybe the inaccuracy of the drum set, or how the shading on the heart is off, you could make some valid points there, of the incorrect EKG even tho it's just a cartoon and can technically be considered some kind of odd heart beat because of the idea of a drumming heart since drumming is not a metronome, instead of trying to find something that isn't there with accusing him of ripping somebody off.

You know I disagree with your attitude, but sometimes that doesn't matter and I agree with some of your (constructive) comments, but this is just silly.

hmmm. Seems like it's just me, but ... i don't get it. I appreciate the illustration, but I too didn't get the 'bricks'. If they were really part of the road why would they be all piled around the tree? I don't understand what's happening in the picture beyond 'tinman looking at a tree with a heart in it'. Hmm. Is there an explanation or am I just being too literal to see any emotion in it?

The great thing about art is we all bring our own interpretations to it.
My interpretation of this design is that the Tin Man is clearing trees to build the yellow brick road (hence the scattered yellow bricks). He comes across the tree with the heart carved in it and doesn't want to cut this one down (hence the title, "This one is special"). Of course, since the tin man at this point in the story (allegedly) doesn't have a heart...

Re: Heart Beats

Generally I'm not a fan of ramyb but this one is actually pretty clever.

And no, I don't think this rips off a previous design because of the inclusion of an EKG. It's clearly a vital part of the gag (a heart beat, hurhurhur!) and wasn't simply thrown in to remind wooters of any past design.

We should encourage this kind of creativity instead of going out of our way to find something to nitpick and complain about.

You love this signature. It's awesome.

Ummmm.... I'm not sure if you actually read the rules but video game ref's were ok in this derby, they change it from derby to derby, so before you go on a rant make sure that you know the facts, if you noticed in the threads your the only one making this argument for this derby. Have a nice day!

Through an act of kindness the wolf begins to understand what friendship and love is and grows a heart. They become inseparable. In fact the story goes that one time he protected her from an ax wielding madman that runs around the forest.

mrwednesday wrote:You've still missed the point entirely. Drawing a robot: not ripping off Robbie. Drawing Robbie's robot: ripping off Robbie. The execution matters. Drawing an EKG as a part of a design: not ripping off tgentry. Drawing an EKG in the exact same manner with the exact same execution: ripping off tgentry.

As long as you are fine with it, what you are saying is that execution of a design element doesn't matter. So as long as someone is drawing something that isn't original it is perfectly ok to rip their style and execution from old designs. That statement is plain ridiculous.

OK, sure, I guess I can see your point now. I don't feel that it's a rip-off in this case because I honestly can't think of any other way of drawing an EKG on a shirt that would still make sense. The measurements scroll from right to left and you're supposed to read them from left to right (in the sense that you watch it as it scrolls past), right? There's only so much variation you can do while it's still recognizable as an EKG; I don't really know but apparently Ramy did his wrong. Eh.

Maybe my analogy with robots was a bad one then. With robots, there is so much more you can do to make a robot your own. But with an EKG - well, that seems a pretty standard thing to me.

Basically what I'm saying that there isn't much style or execution when it comes to EKGs in the first place. It's going to look similar to other EKGs, unless your drawing of it isn't recognizable as an EKG in the slightest.

(Unofficial) Derby Rules (outdated?)
Designing for the Derby (definitely outdated)
