Re: 2010 Year of the Metal Tiger

PLEASE NOTE: THE SHIRT STOCK IS ASPHALT.

The shirt mock-up came out a little darker than the design file. Also, the color in the background behind the shirt mock-up has been faded to make the shirt "pop." Unfortunately, this also makes the shirt appear darker than it is.

marzipanapple wrote:The design looks as if it's cut off from the rest of the shirt(I know that sounds weird but lemme explain). If the disc of yellow weren't there, it might be different.. As it stands, it's a big distraction and seems to overpower the spotlights in the back. I think it would've been hella better with just the red ring (because obviously it helps explain where they are) and then the spotlights. Perhaps even two yellow circles on each character emphasizing the spotlights. Maybe even a few circus props (a ball/ladder) laying around, but that might be too much. The two characters look awesome though. You have a great eye for detail.

Thanks for the advice. I always enjoy hearing critiques or suggestions from other artists/wooters. I may try that option out and see how it looks. Thanks for for compliment on the rest of it, too

Re: Lantern Lights

Phew, I've been MIA trying to recover from a tough week. I'm so happy everyone is enjoying the design! It is really nice to see a shirt make people smile, it's definitely the best reward in submitting here.

Go tiny Jasneko lanterns, go!

And now, I must return to my loafing and vegging for a bit. =_=zzzzz

Re: Zodiac Kites

A little background on this design. I teach English as a second language to international students and each year my students and I celebrate Chinese New Year by making and flying our own kites. This is my vision of our kites as seen through the clouds.

I hope you like it!

mjc613 wrote:There is. Oriah the Ox had been reading the news and was really upset about the children in Afghanistan who have been affected by the war there. She did some research and learned about Afghans for Afghans, a project by knitters to send warm clothes and blankets to those very children.

Since the best yarn for keeping warm is wool, she asked her friend Shirley the Sheep if she could help her out. Shirley agreed to contribute wool and Oriah got out her knitting needles and went to work. Unfortunately, she is very nearsighted and started using yarn from a sheep she didn't know, but who was too polite to say anything. But word got out, and some of the sheep decided to stay in the forest until they could figure out why an ox was knitting!

Please vote for this shirt and get the word out about Afghans for Afghans, so the sheep will be more willing to donate their yarn.

LOL! Love it!

Re: It's an order, RACE!

This is a nice concept and is well executed. That being said, there are some flaws that do make it feel, as other people have noted, incomplete.

The first thing that I noticed, is that there seems to be an inconsistency to the level of detail that the animals are at. Some of them, most noticeably the dragon and the tiger, have a fair amount of detail to them. Many of the rest seem to be plain and somewhat indistinct by comparison. Specifically, the monkey's lack of detail makes it difficult to tell what it is. You might consider adding some more detail to the monkey's head to make it more apparent that it is a monkey.

The snake is inconsistent enough, that it almost seems like it was tacked on as an afterthought. Most of the other animals have at least three levels of shading, whereas the snake only has two. Also, the line thickness on it seems very thin compared with the rest of the animals. I think if you thicken up the lines around the snake, and added another level of shadows to it, it would give it more of a finished look and help unify it with the rest of the animals.

Also, the snake doesn't lend itself well to the flow of the piece. When you look at the piece, your eye starts up at the top-left corner and flows around to the right and down, in a nice loop... until it gets to the snake. The snake's head leads the eye down and away from the remaining animals. This gives the impression to the viewer that the five animals in the front are separated from the six animals in the back. If you point its head more to the left, it will help bring the flow back in line with the rest of the composition.

There is also a large dead space in the middle which, coupled with the snake, creates a very distinct line through the piece that breaks up, what is otherwise, a very good composition. You should consider possibly drawing in some of the horse's back into that space, to help break it up and give it a more coherent feel. Additionally, it would help that spot taper into the dragon more.

This design shows real promise, and I think with just some minor tweaks, it could be a really amazing piece.

As always, these are all just suggestions. This is your piece, and you are free to do as you like with it. If it prints, you can ignore everything I say because obviously nobody else cares about the imperfections I pointed out. That being said, I do encourage you to play with the image some more regardless. I like to see a piece with promise reach its full potential.

Wow people are actually being nice and constructive with their criticisms. Even showing you how to properly do things and you still don't care, get super defensive, and run away.

Re: Chinese Zodiac Gryphon Resub

Resubmission! Please re-vote!

What do you get when you cross all of the animals in the Chinese Zodiac? This monster! --- and I don't just mean the monster 22 Meg print-ready file. Ugh!

6 colors on lemon: black, green, white, brown, red, orange

pink = red + white; gray = black + white; sorrel = brown + red; other weird colors = black + lemon or green + lemon or brown + lemon.

The head is part rat, part pig, with the ears of a dog, the horns of a ram, and Tongue and fangs of a snake.
The body has the back of a tiger and the belly of an ox.
The neck is a horse.
The tail is a monkey.
Front legs of a rooster.
Rear legs of a rabbit.
Wings of a dragon.

Unfortunately, the submission page couldn't take my 22 Meg print-ready and my e-mail server can't take more than 15 meg, so I had to make some minor changes to shrink the print-ready.

And, I know, I know, it's technically not a gryphon. Think of the title as a metaphor.

Re: Enter The Tiger

I keep coming back to stare at this...hotdamn it's cool.

I do see a few minor flaws, some of which have been mentioned. However, art in itself is almost never perfect. One of my art teachers through school told us "I never give perfect grades, because art is never perfect." I fully agree. I can enjoy art, complete with it's flaws, as that's what makes it 'human'.

Really digging though, I seriously keep coming back to it. It needs some Hadouken up in there, hahaha! Awesome. Wishing you a print Patrick!

I normally sway towards character based art, but this is actually pretty cool. You took the theme and did something very different with it. This is really wearable and it can fit any gender . Nice texture work too!

eHalcyon wrote:My friend said the same thing about incompleteness. I think it's because some of the animals are lacking eyes.

Other than that, I think it looks amazing.

I have to agree. This is a wonderful design with so much potential (not to mention it looks great on the white), but the lack of eyes really bothers me. It could just be a personal taste thing, but it would bug me to death if I owned it. Other than that tiny little detail I think this is a refreshingly beautiful piece.
