Don't listen to that marriage part! It's clearly reverse psychologies.

Heh, I think the NVG is so very unnecessary, but I would love to see the cat using camo.

sokowa wrote:Looking at this design and your color choices I think you could add just a wee bit more "depth" to the drawing. Try a version where the light yellow is a highlight on the banana peal and out side of the lemon and the darker color is the shadow for the banana fruit. Likewise swap around the two blue to add highlights to the pie's filling and shadows to the cupcake frosting. Just my two cents We each have our own styles so I'd understand if you tell me to bugger off.
Oh, maybe instead of a black outline pick some darker brown so you can do the same tricks to the ant and pie crust/cupcake wrapper.

~Cheers

odysseyroc wrote:I did a sloppy 5 minute overpaint on this, to show you how little it really takes to add some depth. A fatter outline would also help.

Many thanks guys! I really do appreciate the feedback, and your suggestions are super helpful. I'm gonna tackle the design tonight to see if I can improve it (and by using your suggestions, I am sure I can!) and perhaps resubmit it tomorrow. This is only my second derby and I haven't really had any prior experience with working on designs such as this on the computer, so your suggestions are extremely helpful. Thank you so much! <3

I said it before: the guy is pretty damn happy with his new hands. He views them as an upgrade. Who are we to judge for him? It's a broad theme, and Edgar has taken the route of the bizarre, but it's no less legitimate a route.

I honestly don't see how the new color improves it whatsoever. If anything, asphalt dulls the colors a bit.

Hey you crazy guys, you. ^__^

I've been lurking these forums for a while, checking in on the daily shirt woot for a while longer. Tonight is my first foray into the derby.

Scary stuff!

I come bearing Octopong. May the gods bless whoever just gave me a vote, saving my humble creation from the ignominy of zero points.

I'm looking forward to checking out all of the incoming designs and seeing how this goes. Good luck to all the designers!

Re: Zombie Evolution

the hand is a really great touch, definitely makes it better

as someone else mentioned in the other thread, i think a zombie getting shot wouldve been better for the last one. i cant recall seeing zombies running athletically in any movie or game ive ever seen/played.

i can see how you made him run cause of the theme though, but i dont think it fits for a zombie.

I don't know about athletically, but the zombies sure do -move- in Left 4 Dead and Resident Evil 5. This is probably a fair guess at their evolution!

Tanapangarap wrote:Heh, I think the NVG is so very unnecessary, but I would love to see the cat using camo.

The NVG are what make me laugh. Camo could be cool but camo is pretty common. Any hunter is going to have it. But night-vision? That's a bit more hardcore. I mean, you know a guy is serious when he's equipping Night-vision. It also emphasizes the nocturnal element which is the point of the owl as opposed to just another cat or whatever. It doesn't matter how good Mr.Owl can see in the dark... Kitty-Kitty has him beat.

For me the goggles are the punchline of the design. Just the ridiculousness of it makes me laugh. So that's the reasoning for them being there and why I find them very necessary. Also Drakxxx, yes, I love me some Splinter Cell and Rainbow Six.

Thanks for the comment.

Smoothesuede wrote:Eeehh... I'm trying to justify why I dislike this shirt but I really can't. Like usual from Edgar, it's nicely on theme and the art is "okay"(I use quotations because I think that style is gristle, but others love it).

Something about it just feels lazy to me, like any ol' chump could come up with this and replicate the art fairly easily given only a few moments of thought.
Just doesn't do it for me... That, and I hate-hate-hate squiggly lines(like those used for his torso/apron), it looks childish and silly to me; not in a good way.

Very sorry.

i agree with this, the way its drawn isnt up to par. even though i usually dont like edgar shirts, i can see how the other ones are nice artistically though. this is worse.

its definitely on theme, and the concept is creepy and borderline wearable, but the lack of a good execution makes it something i wouldnt want. the artwork doesnt impress me at all. honestly, it looks like something adder could have drawn

jmmbell1987 wrote:

However, I think it's erroneous to suggest that anyone could come up with this. Again, that's a superficial view of the art. Not just anyone could come up with something this demented, conveying so much... well... happiness. I can see how it's not for everyone. Hell, if it printed, I doubt it'd sell well at all. But I don't think there's much real merit to the argument that anyone could come up with this.

you are impressed easily if the conveyance of happiness is what makes this design impressive. its a standard smiley, much like this :D, but with eyes like this ^^

i just think this coulve been doen much better. from a pure art perspective, i really dont think it should be praised too much. it really is something most people can replicate, or even draw on their own if they were given the idea. in fact, that is exactly what i think when i see this design: if someone that doesnt have much experience with art is asked to draw a happy person that has just replaced his hands with hooks (non stick figure), then this is what i would expect them to come up with.

i really feel the execution could have been done better. that doesnt doesnt necessarily mean it shouldve been made really complicated instead, as the simplistic style may be what many like, but i just think this is really lacking, and amateur looking.

Ah, yes, I was rejected at least once for being off topic, and as a result I made up a second entry that week, "Puckers of the world," which was so incredible that it appeared in like the first or second double take derby. So rejection was good in that case.

Unless my memory is off, but I think that's how it all went down...

I was also rejected once for another entry that was rejected for apparently being too close to an actual copyrighted image for my "eat a pita" entry, but I didn't think it was copying anything as I was pretty sure I made it up myself-- perhaps it was just so good it looked like some professionally-produced artwork! Yeah, that's probably what it was...

Frankly man, this shirt is a bit ugly.

I mean, I get the idea that bad drawing is a hipster style thing, but mostly I just find it lazy.

In addition to the terrible drawing and blatant plagiarism, I have a problem with the design itself. Why is this turtle racing? It doesn't make sense. It's just a horribly drawn chibi turtle with a jetpack. I don't get it. What's creative or original about it?

I don't expect Ramy to create good shirts...but I wonder why people like this? Who would wear something like this? It makes no sense, it's ugly and it's as unique as a Seth MacFarlane cartoon.

okay I'm sorry i usually never comment on designs even if they are completely awesome (which this one definitely is), but all of these comments are ridiculous and i had to say something. first of all the design is spectacular. the placement is awesome, the illustration is kick ass, the theme is definitely there, and in general it just made me laugh really really hard.

Indeed.
