sakleehop wrote:Hey Snow - Love your design and you know how I feel about sharks!!! Can't get enough. Really well done and I love the atmosphere you create with the colors. You will/should print soon - you're definitely developing a following and your illustrations are among the best out there. Another great piece! GMV.

Hi sakleehop! I DO know how you like sharks which is why I kept putting more in! I thought of you while doing this! I commented to my family yesterday that it takes a long time to do one shark. It takes a REALLY long time to do 11 sharks a loggerhead(?) turtle, a funny pink fish (very roughly based on our 2 beta fish "Rainbow and Flower"a bunch of sea shells and of course the two mermaids. I didn't even go to bed thursday night, staunchly did I sit all day and night Friday and finally got the thing submitted in the dead of sat-sun night. I was sooo behind schedule on it, so tired. I actually caught myself falling asleep at the computer 2x's!!! So I really appreciate that anyone likes it...these are the colors you pick when you are exhausted, pretty dreamy colors , but also colors that you can SEE!!

MaliceKaiser wrote:I really like the idea, but honestly, the figures that are still "alive" already look flattened. I think the design would have been a lot more successful if the standing figures didn't look so flat; it's make a much bigger contrast between them and the poor steamrolled victim.

Not my favourite design from Boots, but heck, I do love your work in general. :]

I made them flat so that it would just be a pointless annoyance when the steamroller rolls over them. To me, it makes the steamrolling guy seem like more of an piece of toast. I don't think I got that across very well though, so you're right. It probably would have been better the other way.

Thanks for the comments, everyone.

Do you do a line drawing by hand??
Or did you do all this on the computer?
I can’t imagine the amount of time you spent.
I would love to learn your technique. Layers brushes...everything!
As for me wearing this... it’s a little to girlish for my taste, but that doesn’t mean that it’s not f'n awesome

Tomatoed wrote:I hate to nitpick, not really, but I see the theme of the shirt is steampunk, but this week's derby theme is the letter s. What on this shirt starts with the letter s?

It may be just me, but it looks like the line of the arms from the two ladies follow an S shape. (This may be accidental, but it still looks interesting.) With such an open-ended theme as "S words" there is a lot of room for interpretation and I think this one does a great job of that. Beautiful art!

Such a happy feel to this illustration and good choice of color scheme. For sure one of the most, if not the most, wearable design in this derby.

Love the design!... and although it does remind me of Sullen (which I ordered and still like despite the smudgy print), I think this is fresher and will print better than Sullen - the blue creates more of a visual contrast for the black and brings it out...

There's been a severe deficit in light-color shirts and I am happy to see this in the fog.

definitely GMV!!!

Re: spirituality

Hi meyeroshalmi, I read all the comments on your thread and I wanted to say that I like your shirt , sometimes people do preach hate, I don't see the one mean guy as a reflection of ALL people, just some people.

I am from up north (Vermont) and we have a female bishop (Episcopalian...catholic without all the rules against women, priests can be male or female and they can marry and they do not have to be "Straight." It is about helping people not hate)

BUT there are some people who can't see past their own noses, like the guy on your shirt. I like your
shirt...find it's message to be funny , it doesn't confuse me at all that he's going on about 3 different religions, it's typical I think, of the sort of person who is all riled up about religion.

Thanks EZ! Aw, c'mon! Wear the girly shirt! (Ha ha!)

I usually do a drawing on paper then redraw it in photoshop then color it in illustrator . For this one I tried drawing directly on the computer, I had the idea worked out in my head , but I think that slowed me down, next derby I am going to go back to the quick drawing on paper thing 1st.

I challenged you to submit to the dailies and I hereby challenge myself, that way I can do a design without the intense pressure of the derby...so I'm going to figure out something cool to submit, something for summer. You do something funny!!

Even though yellow is not that popular (and I'm not too big of a fan of yellow shirts either), I think it works for the shirt.

The sandy bottom of the ocean where the show took place was pretty yellow. There's also a nice "vibrant-ness" from the yellow background that helps the colors pop...which I think makes the whole shirt work.

The only other color I think would work would be a tan shirt. But the wooden sushi base wouldn't be as nicely contrasted.

I've never commented on a shirt before...can you tell I REALLY want it to print?
