HAHA! Awesome. This is why I usually don't comment on things. I was replying to my reply while logged in as my son (fyrefalcon). Go fig.

I don't really feel the need to comment further, accept to facepalm at my obvious lack of technical ability to comment on a woot shirt correctly.

about style y din't think that anyone could say that if jack kirby or infantino or ditko or anyone in siver age draw it so much diferent. also, comics book is NOT just about superheroes, in fact allmayor comanies has in the 60 comics like BATLASH (western comic that hanging around dices, cards games, girls, indians, etc)
anyway i take your critique :D

The criticism is correct. I like the idea, but it's true that this design does not, in any way, look like it was drawn by Kirby or Ditko. And your response doesn't address that criticism, it just sounds like making excuses.

I understand woot is about selling t-shirts, so some artists will be perfectly willing to bend or break the derby rules to make a thousand bucks. That's just capitalism.

But what I don't get is why those artists feel the need to deflect criticism, or twist themselves into logic pretzels trying to claim they actually followed the derby rules when they so obviously didn't. Why not just own it and say "yeah, I ignored the rules, I'm trying to sell t-shirts here".

Perhaps I wasn't addressing to you and responding to cerijerome's "I don't get it" instead. ;)

Also if anyone would actually like to offer you know, some constructive feedback, that would be woot. I'm not old like some of you guys and I was totally surprised that art existed before anime!!!1!111one Did a fair amount of research for this and picked a silver age artist who's work I was semi-familiar with and thought would be most appropriate. However if you feel like "Woah, this shirt would totally be better with a topless Frazettan woman riding the super llama out of a perilous situation with a FWOOSH! in the background", feel free to say so.

Thanks again folks! Nice to see it fog. =)

Hi Fable, I just checked your link to your site, very woot!

I think the rendering of the llama is excellent. I would like to say that before I joined woot last december, I didn't know what the word anime meant, or the word chibi...no idea! I guess to you some of us are old, but that comment hurt, you will be old someday too.

I Do like your drawing and find it to be excellent...which artist did you choose as your silver age inspiration? sincerely. snowqueenvt

One more observation...I grew up with bugs bunny you grew up with pokemon ...for this derby you were asked to stop drawing the way you were raised to undue your training and to show something else, and I congratulate you on your creation because that Llamas face and stance are very "old school" this is a compliment, I love your art here and would enjoy seeing you use this style again sometimes.

i just take a comic concept like "the really awesome names that superheroes use" and create something with it.

But this is about ART style. Is in the name of the derby!!
Is about making a design that VISUALLY reminds the comic style from that era (30s-70s).
This doesn't have any of that.
Best luck reading the theme next time.

Hah sorry... no, I'm old too. Feels like it lately anyway. You get to that point when kids are like "no, I've never heard of such and such TV show/song/movie. Is it old?" I'm just not quite Golden/Silver Age yet. XD I was looking at Alex Toth's work. Less Fighting Forces and more Intimate Love and Super Friends. The black hatching in the llamas fur that I had initially looked incredibly messy so I went for cleaner lineart with less hair texture, like on a superhero's suit.

Thanks to everybody who have been leaving great comments. I honestly didn't think this design would do as well as it's done. i sort of expected it to just sit in the bottom third somewhere. I was happy to see it do well the first day, then a bit bummed to see it start falling down the chart. Hopefully I can come up with something really good for you all, next derby.

I may have to design a badge to award to the people whose designs actually are on theme each week. Judging by this week, it wouldn't take long to award them all.

I'm really sad about some of the designs that have left the fog, and even more disappointed in some of the designs that replaced them.

I loved the Super friends when I was a kid, I am glad that you answered back as I was walking around here feeling like "I'm old!...still gorgeous (haha) but old!"

Again...Great job with the expression and stance on your character it follows the gudelines not anime in the least, it really is an excellent drawing! Good luck! Also, all your fans who ARE young and were raised on the anime, maybe showing them that their heroine Fablefire has respect for the old ways will give them a chance to learn something... after all, this derby is about the roots of cartooning, a proud and distinguished history of incredible artwork!!

I'm not trying to start a fight or anything with you.

Just saying, you need to learn some boundaries. Yeah this is a comment thread, but posting a picture of a religious leader doing whatever. Really?

Just cause this is a comment thread doesn't mean it has ABSOLUTELY NO boundaries. You never know who you could be offending or hurting by posting a picture, which, in your opinion, might be "no biggie." That's YOUR opinion. There's hundreds of people other than yourself on enjoying this site too.

And apparently the joke wasn't very funny.

Seriously:

1) Follow the rules.

2) Don't design shirts that have already been done because that's called plagiarism.

Damn, definitely GMV!

Thanks! That's exactly what I was trying to design. I love the idea of the inverted wax sheet. There's a great kid book "Earl The Squirrel" that has that kind of inverse space.

Re: SKREEEEEEEEEEE!

I wish I could pull this shirt off.

Great artwork. The only thing I could really find to critique is the placement of the three people. If they were staggered a little bit, they'd look less like they were dancing and a bit more like they were running away in fear. Great silhouettes on them, though. Excellent choice of highlights.

I keep going back and forth on the wall of Skreee! behind the art. A part of me thinks it's perfectly fine, but another part of me thinks it is too much wall. Maybe put the creatures tongue to that light pink his eye is? Dunno. Things to think about, I suppose.

This was a tough derby -- and I think it shows by the number of worthwhile submissions (and the lack of entries from familiar winners). You did a good job at representing the theme and having fun with it.

brockart wrote:Did you use three colors, or are you using the overprints of the red and blue? The overprint is a sweet effect.

The overprint would result in a purple instead of the pure black that is needed to give the best results when using 3D glasses, so it is a 3 color design.

That would appear to be the point of the comp. But I wouldn't worry too much about it. Not on a template, has text and is off-topic. Will get the big red stamp before too long.
