Great concept. The drawing style is a bit too light-hearted for me personally. War and peace are some heavy themes.

Thanks odysseyroc! It felt like a slight deviation from my normal layout tendencies (if there is such a thing), glad you like it!

hehe... the little mermaid always falls for the unattainable ones;) (In the real tale, the prince marries a princess and the little mermaid dies broken-hearted and turns into a water sprite... a much sadder ending than with Ariel!)

Re: 80 Days/20000 Leagues

The absurdity of a hot-air balloon under water (or for that matter, a squid in the air) would make this - but... I don't know. I can't decide if the coral is unnecessary and just the squid/baloon should stay, or someing more is needed to really balance the air/water justaposition... A cloud, to add to that faint half-tone of air? Or maybe a darker tee color would server the same purpose, to make the 'air' pop.

I am very impressed at 1- your knowledge of the true color of Frankenstein and 2-the pucker version of Frank. Are you entering your Adaptive Period as an artist?

I was looking at this and wondering why it bothered me, then read Eshto's comment and the lite went on. While I think this is a fab illustration with great coloring - on white! yay! It really does take too light a tone for the subject matter (both books, in fact).
That said, no one seeing it worn would have a clue what the references were, they'd just like the design.
So I guess that's a thumbs-up!

Well, Mother Goose's Rhymes (from which Hey Diddle Diddle comes) was only compiled into a book a few hundred years ago, though many of the rhymes themselves date back more than a millennium. The Book of the Dead isn't too much of a book, more like a scroll, but it also got carved in stone a lot. I've been wanting to do a hieroglyphic design for a while and saw this as a good opportunity.

Re: Treasure Island / the island of Dr. Moreau

While your illustration is nice, and the colors well-chosen, think maybe it's lacking some context, back-story. Like, the figure of the monkey pirate in a beach scene digging up his treasure...

Funnee! You have a good eye for NOT drawing in things that don't need to be there (like the rest of the bed). Ssomething I need to learn.

thanks paigeg. I had few different versions of this. I had the Island and one that was a 3/4 view with a parrot on his shoulder. they all looked to busy. In the end the kids like the plan design; so I went with it.

You only have one cute animal, usually to win you have to strap something to it's back or have another animal who looks sad/tired/annoyed. Nothing in this shirt differentiates the pirate that you are referencing from any other pirate or the monkey you are referencing from any other monkey. Basically your shirt lacks context.

My advise is to leave this cute animal stuff to RamyB and put a little more thought into it.

I think you'd be surprised. I don't think that anyone would argue that the war/peace dichotomy is in any way ambiguous. And I also think that the fact that it is two cities is perfectly clear as well.

You are probably correct that most wouldn't make the automatic jump that it's a mash-up of the two but don't think that has anything to do with the tone of the shirt. The designs which are obvious mash-ups are simply juxtaposing iconic scenery and characters. I for one find a more original and creative take on the theme quite refreshing. And while the "war" building is sort of light hearted, the people there are most definitely not.

Re: The LIttle Mermaid/Moby not Jane

Hey the fog! Thanks voters!

I was just saying this in the pre-derby thread... I'm a tad embarrassed of being one of so many whale entries... I didn't quite expect that. I personally have had whales on my mind because I've been researching them recently.

And since I have... speaking of Ahab...I discovered that despite it being illegal, 1000 whales per year are still hunted - very upsetting! And then there are all the other dangers for whales because of people - pollution, collisions with ships, getting caught in fishing gear - pretty bad. Whales are really awesome creatures! So, since this seems to be a very whale-y derby, but there aren't actually so many in the world, if anyone is interested in reading more about whales: Link to World Wildlife page about them.

And, just in case... if you even want to donate (any amount!) to help protect them, you can do that too - or even adopt a whale:D

Vote!
