Ya know, I saw this design and was kinda disappointed it got first. I thought it was a clever idea (and well rendered, by the way), but there was just something about it that was bothering me. You helped me figure it out.

To me, it's one of those ideas that look great in thought, but just doesn't make much sense in execution. I think there is a monkey inside the Magic 8 Ball rolling the little triangular-dice-thing to get the answer and snickering because it's screwing with me.

Just my opinion as a complete non-artist and solely a buyer. Take it for what you will, but the pattern of those halftones looks SO cheap. I feel like I could find this shirt on a $2 bargain bin at goodwill due to somebody ironing on the design.

The concept is amazing. The tackiness of those halftones ruin it for me.

Depending on your screen resolution and the size of this particular image, your monitor may be making the halftones look like they have unusual patterns/visual artifacts in them that aren't really there.

If you look at the original derby entry, the halftones look normal (at least on my monitor). That's probably how the shirt will print.

As it says "Ask Again Later," I figured they were having technical difficulties. The little computers in almost all magic 8 balls seem to share this unreliability.

Just so you know, that little picture up the top isn't a real shirt btw...

A very deserving winner!

The halftones look awful in Woot's preview picture, but they looked very well made on the derby image. I'm sure they'll print very nicely.

YAY, TRAVIS!!

this was the standout design this week - the only design IMO that took the "How does it work?" theme and not only clearly expressed the theme, but also had a clever twist to illustrate it. Your designs are always so wearable!

So, in the "resting" position of all Magic 8 Balls, those guys are upside down. Or are they on a gimbal? Seems uncomfortable.

The worst part is getting the scientists to fit inside the 8-ball. ;)

These guys are network engineers trying to get a crashed system back up. The 8 ball response is the response from the help desk when they receive hundered of calls like, "When will the system be back up?" I know this because the answer is always, "Ask again later."

Clearly the inner chamber is separate from the outer shell, and stabilized in an upright position by a gyroscope. The purple fluid between the two chambers acts as a slightly compressable insulator, softening the effects of kinetic energy resultant in shaking the ball.

Sounds viable to me!

Why? Science is fundamentally built on doubt. The reason science works is that when we don't know something, we admit we don't know. And then we keep gathering evidence and doing tests in the hopes of one day finding out the real answer. The holes in our knowledge are what drive the whole enterprise.

"Ask again later" is a perfectly valid scientific answer to some questions. Scientists don't know everything. They're working on it. Like, is there life on other planets? Well probably. But we don't know for sure yet. Ask again later.

The real difference between science and a real 8 ball is that the 8 ball gives random answers that are inconsistent and not based on any evidence. But therein lies the irony of the t-shirt.

I don't know why some people are reacting so harshly to this design by the way, I think it is just fine. I admired it from the beginning.

Thanks everyone that voted for this! I contacted woot about how the 8-ball looks all 8-bit in the preview image. Apparently the actual print file is smooth and they are looking to possibly update the preview with a crisper image. Thanks woot!

cool...my favorite that doesn't involve fuzzy ears -- yes, we can like both science and cute, o scoffers of the universe...like how the smoothness both draws you in + makes you want to take it off the shirt and give it a shake (with apologies to the wearer and the guys running the algorithms)

I'm curious, Adder- what are your top 3 picks for this derby? I honestly consider this shirt creative and well-executed. And Tgentry isn't commonly known for pandering. I think a take on two cultural icons to illo 'how it works' is lightyears ahead of the 'Stephanie' (PURE pandering) and puking cloud (so done) entries. This was not my fave because it's not my thing - I'm a geek at the office by necessity, and a rocker at home by choice. So, no. Doesn't mean I don't respect it. So, what would you have picked?
