Well I know that the Island has jumped through time before, but hasn't it jumped through space as well? I'd actually be surprised if it hasn't.

So far I count only 12 designs that are actually sticking to the theme this week...

Of those, only two are in the fog...

Just making note...

I have to agree that this isn't really on theme. I also doubt that there will be a better design in the derby, but so it goes.

Its a phenomenal design...you have major artistic skill, but unfortunately the theme was bystanders at historical events, and

1. This never happened
2. There is no bystader at all

1) You''re correct and I agree.
2) I think people are getting too caught up in the bystander part. It's just history from a different angle. Show what really happened.

Unfortunately, while I LOVE this design, it's not on theme, IMO.

"Champagne is a very kind and friendly thing on a rainy night." -Isak Dinesen

"There are many ways to the recognition of truth; Burgundy is one of them." -Isak Dinesen

You raise an excellent point about visibility, Gratzy. I think I might just have to go ahead and resubmit this guy in more readable dimensions. Apologies to spurned voters!

Re: Eat Cake!

When Marie Antoinette was told that the people couldn't afford bread, she's rumored to have said, "Let them eat cake." --- Only, you know, in French. So when this gentleman saw an enterprising vendor at her execution, he thought, "You know, that's not a bad idea."

To be fair, this has got to be one of the weakest themes to date. For God's sakes, Draxxx made a design with Ben Franklin in it.

but I love the story of Ben + the bathtub.

While I completely agree that this is a great idea, I think it could use some work. Two things it does not need, the top and bottom panel, as some others have already stated, and the middle panel itself really doesn't need the small scissors thought bubble. While some people may not get it right at first, the idea would come across quite clearly without it, and it would make the shirt much stronger without it. Also, not that original of an idea in the first place. http://robertbonnett.files.wordpress.com/2009/11/hitler-scissors-beat-paper.jpg Still sgreat to see in illustrated form, though (yes, I know it's not supposed to be hitler) just my opinion.

It was rightly pointed out that in the first edition the content was much too small to read properly from a distance.

Where is the historical event?

Where is the eye witness?

This does not follow the theme even slightly

More of an historic fashion statement... I mean, others may have been wearing Tall Hat before him, but he made it cool. And i suppose whoever made this portrait (me?) would be the one eyewitness to the US's first otherworldly president.

Re: A Ballad of John Henry

Brilliant illustration. I find the original sub was easier to read without the distressing and color changes, but it's still awesome.

There's a blurry line between folklore and history, people are divided on whether this was an actual event, but I believe it's completely on theme in that sense.

For this derby I wanted to make something related with flying history, so here it is, my version of what happened over the Atlantic Ocean during the night of May 20th and the early morning of the next day in 1927 while Charles Lindbergh was flying towards Europe and making history at the same time.
He was so tired that he fell asleep, but right before he crash over the ocean a bunch of seagulls came and rescued him, fixing his route and putting him away from trouble. When he woke up the airplane was flying fast and steady.

Re: I Laika You

@TobiasAmaranth: I'm really pleased you think so! Thanks. I spent the whole day drawing and redrawing the characters, trying out the colors and effects in different ways. I tried not to stop until I was certain everything was working.

@tulsastorm: and that's why I have a Shih tzu. No shedding. ^__^

@lucky1988, fishbiscuit5: Thanks! The expression went through a few styles - I had a very realistic Laika in the drawing at first, but the more I simplified her the more expressive she got.

@notnorm: lol.

@ChrisRisse: thanks. I wanted a popping blue to hold everything together. :^)

@sokowa, timemachine, arcade-art: Thank you!

riddlescn wrote:I agree, I would like this a lot more as just the middle frame, but I'd still buy it in a half a heartbeat!

Hi guys!
About the Churchill pictures... they don't affect my design at all. Not the first time someone has had an idea that others have had too. And for the t-shirt format, I believe this is new.

About the tree frames: I did several tests with this design and one of the things I like the most is the fact it has a storytelling. If I had gone for a one time joke, it would be a completely different design and it would lose a lot of the fun (in my opinion).

* The first frame sets the scene: a dictator, giving his usual salute. You don't know what is coming next.
* The second, introduces the unexpected, nonsense element: the idea that it's all part of a child's game.
* The third is, for me, when the laugh really comes: the exaggeration, the light hearted sadness of the loser, the absurd happiness of the winner, the ridiculousness of that dispute.

Might as I try, I just can't see it working well without one of them.
If I cut lose the first, I lose the surprise people would have when the second frame comes.
If I cut lose the last, I lose the absurd reactions, which I believe are crucial to make the joke lighter and funnier.

I respect your opinions, but for me it's definitely a joke in 3 times. ;))

Thanks a lot for all the comments! You've been great. :-D
