Johndis5 wrote:It's obviously historically inaccurate, but it's funny. The idea that the Wright Bros. were bitter old men that couldn't stand the thought of other flight technologies is both original and entertaining.

I'm not sure about the "rushed" thing. Usually when I see "seems rushed" as a criticism the design looks sloppy.... what is rushed about it?

I agree with you. The Wright bros being bitter old men trying to sabotage german competitors it's funny. But this aren't bitter old men, are blank munny dolls.
When i say it seems rushed i mean that, lack of detail, two generic dolls don't represent two flying pioneers whose pictures can be found anywhere. The same goes to the blimp.
She obviously has the talent to do it better, the concept itself has on my a buyer.

But again, I really like this.

HEY, thats my hand. I know. It's weird.

Re: The man who ended the war

Regarding rejection, I prefer to wait to see what woot thinks.
But IMO it would be a bit too moralist to reject, given I'm not laughing at people who suffered or died or anything. I'm just, as many other people have done before me, seeing a historical fact (the gesture used by real dictators - note the PLURAL) through a lightened perspective.

I knew it had potential to be polemic. But I'm happy to see that a lot of you understood and liked it. ;)

I did it the way I wanted to see it. I wouldn't like it the other way. But, then again I really have no interest in history, so I'm sure that has something to do with it.

I respectfully want to ask, if you don't have any interest on history, why to participate on something that needs to be based on historical facts?

Indeed she has the talent, I own a few boots designs. Sometimes choosing simplistic in lieu of extensive detail works. I think in this case, it works. If you would prefer more detail as per your taste, I can respect that, but to state that it was rushed because she didn't want to put in the effort as opposed to it being an artistic decision in style is kind of unfair. Dare I even say, a rushed judgment on your part.

I think this will get rejected, not because a dictator reference (totally different 'stash than Hitler), I just don't see the "Eyewitness History" here.

If it does get rejected, definitely save it to be resubmitted for another derby as I love it and think it's pretty damn funny.

I disagree, I think that's the coolest part- it gives the design more of a unique style, and by being more graphic than traditionally illustrative, it feels more wearable.

I have an interest in humor and I thought it was a funny idea. Also, the theme isn't based on historical facts or historical accuracy, it's based on putting a creative take on a historical event. I think that's fun. If the theme had been "depict a historical event in the most factual way possible and be sure to get all the details historically correct" I certainly would have not participated.

P.S. I'm respectfully answering. Seriously, I hope you don't see me as being defensive or anything. I like the discussion and appreciate it.

There have been several derby entries that used photography and were allowed- here's one that even got an HM (there have been others, it's just the first one I thought of).

I've been following Woot's rulings on it, and am pretty confident that their concern isn't the use of photography- it's the use of stolen images, unprintable images, and graphics that look terrible on the shirt because they haven't been converted well.

So I'm confident that I'm not in violation of the rules (I wouldn't have entered if I thought I was), but of course if Woot feels differently I'd understand their position.

It doesn't look rushed at all Boots, don't sweat it. Only critique I have is that the stroke around the halftones looks a little weird on the top left side. Or is that just how it's coming out with the web gfx?

I thought about that before subbing. But I ended up assuming that if I'm showing my view of something that happened, I'm making YOU the witness, right? It's just a different way of seeing the theme.

And if I get rejected because of that... well, with all due respect, than 70% of the derby have to be to. ;)

Usually visual creative takes on historical events still need some sort of visual coherence, but you know what? you are right, this isn't about if in 1937 we had helium or hydrogen blimps, it's about how people react vote wise to the artwork.
I'm a die hard aviation history enthusiast, that's why i think what i think about your artwork. But just to make a comparison, I'm pretty sure a lot of people in the chemistry world would get annoyed by the 'Chucknorrium' shirt, which I find awesome.
At the end, it's just a matter of opinion.
Sorry to bother you and shake that hand as a sign of peace.

A while back I said something like that about a design and I think a woot mod corrected me. I guess it's ok to use a photo as long as it's your photo and not somebody else work. Or something like that.
