Assuming they're enforcing it, it is a great rule. After a Kawaii derby it will be a nice break.

It seems these extra rules are sometimes a joke and sometimes truly enforced -- you never know...

Here's to hoping, they did reject the crying baseball in this last derby, and you know there's going to be a dedicated group or tattlers if something even smells of Japan.

Yeah I think so, the extra rules are added as on top of type rulings that overule the basic guidlines, though I hadn't really seen them in force untill this derby with the rejection of the crying baseball.

They grow up so fast. I can remember only yesterday I was working on the 2 y/o design...

I thought about this too, as I had a really nice design in mind involving dragons. Probably shouldn't risk it though. Poot, it was kind of neato too.

Maybe I'll try something silly and weird. I like the derbies because it's such a great outlet for just drawing what makes you feel good each week. :D

it could be a scottish dragon, like dragon slayer kinda dragon instead of the usual twisty, tribal japanese dragon though.

or it could be something else entirely. =)

Unfortunately it would involve a long sinewy dragon :\. I can easily make it look non-asian, but as TJost said, people are going to have itchy tattle fingers for this derby. ^^

Touché... I don't know if the rule has been enacted to eliminate kawaii... but it could also eliminate other Japanese art forms as well... Brushy lines and woodcuts come to mind...

I don't think woot would want to eliminate brushy lines or woodcuts...

It's pretty ambiguous...

I was under the impression that the long twisty dragons are originally from China... If you make the rest of the illo chinese-like you should be safe!

So does the "no text but 3" mean you also can't have graphical elements involving other numbers? Not typefaces, but actual drawings?

I know we're going to see a lot of Three Little Pigs related designs, but I was thinking it'd be funny if the third pig built a big arrow sign (pointing to the other two houses) with a picture of bacon on it instead of building a house made of bricks. When I get home I'll have to whip up some drawings on my new Bamboo Pen :D

It's nice to have a broader subject for everyone to aim at, in whatever style they like. I don't know if I'll be able to join in this week but it'll be fun to watch. :^)

I believe it's referring III being the largest Roman Numeral to use as many lines as the number represents. Or at least that's what I thought when I read it.

Hey in my defense, I did that piece originally for the Japan derby, and the I cutified it even more for a Kawaii derby which is again Japanese. That's my story and I'm sticking to it I'm not saying I don't like some of those things, this is just gonna make people branch out a bit and some may, gasp, have to change their styles for one derby ;)

I actually googled "largest number written with as many lines as the number represents" to see what they were talking about, and it's actually a direct quote from a Wikipedia article talking about Roman Numerals. So the others were right, it's a direct reference.

I find it kind of odd that, with a derby as wide open as this, the focus is on ways to include the only excluded thing they listed. You must have some other design you could use than a Japanese dragon to represent three.

Merci beaucoup, tgentry, for the fascinating tidbit of information. Might not make the best t-shirt, but as a comic book writer, it's absolutely set my mental gears turning with regards to an anthology of war stories a colleague wants to create ... I'm thinking i might be able to do something interesting with this ...

I've heard of this superstition. My grandfather used to speak of it whenever we lit a match in his house. I actually could think of a couple ways to make this work.

Actually I could picture that being a pretty cool shirt. I'd like to see someone try it.

Meaning, if I wanted to create characters out of numbers, that were actually hand drawn, I couldn't? Because I would have to use numbers other than 3?
