AdderXYU wrote:I hope anyone arguing their art is "really (insert other asian country) art, so it counts" is still rejected. It says no japanese culture and no copyrighted material. So how about you all grow up and become the artists you seem to think you are by making a damned design that has zero to do with Japan or Someone Else's Work. It's possible to do that once in a while, yknow. Shoehorning an asian dragon in, and arguing that it's on theme due to its number of toes, is saying you have no ability to come up with good ideas OR follow rules. You're doing everything in your power to break the rule without breaking the rule.

also, thanks scott. I've always said the writers here do good work.

... last week really chafed eh??

Who's to say an asian dragon doesn't have anything to do with a good design or idea... (besides Adder)??

Deep breaths, AdderXYU.

It's a random rule, something that only needs to be followed to its letter. It's not devised in any spirit of fostering creativity, it's a random whim of a random guy, put there for fun. A few derbies back you were telling everyone to ignore the whole theme completely just because ya didn't like it.

I'd understand if you were posting to try to save people from wasting their time and effort on designs that will likely get rejected, but it never comes across that way. It always seems to get personal.

You're someone who's very experienced with the t-shirt biz, you know Woot like the back of your hand too, and I've seen you organize positive things like the Threadless competition. I wish you could use that part of yourself more often to be supportive and help folks out here, instead of unleashing the rage of your own entirely personal opinions as if it was a big ol' truth hammer.

You're missing the point. Everyone's so quick to dogpile Adder and say "LOL LOOK AT HIM COMPLAIN!" when really, he IS making a valid point.

What's so wrong with saying that people should try to come up with an idea that doesn't involve an Asian-style dragon? Really, are there not enough t-shirts with them in the world that you have to desperately try and skirt around the rules for your entry? There's plenty of subject matter. The rules are VERY lax this week, when you think about it. Use your brain and try to come up with something awesome and new instead of making an entry purely to make one person angry.

You all hop on Adder for being (insert adjective of your choice here), but is your life so boring that you dedicate time to make art to annoy him or to sit and watch him rage? Put that energy into making some GOOD shirts! You know, like woot USED TO HAVE.

er, my readin' skilz aren't what they used to be. was somebody actually proposing to do an entry solely for this purpose?

... it does sound like fun, though!

Well anyway, I found some time so here's what I've been working on. :

(Trilobites, meaning "three lobes". Sadly extinct... too tasty to live.) Too random? ^_^

I'm still working on their cookie-ness. The text isn't part of the shirt, of course. If anyone has any thoughts or suggestions I'd be glad to hear them.

Here is one I made under a diff. user name, and reworked let me know what you think.

When I get home I'll have to whip up some drawings on my new Bamboo Pen :D

You can't go wrong with bacon

I'd be interested to see all the different designs on Three Little Pigs, as well as the ones that are not pig related. Mine is pig related as well. I tried a Pi design, but I just couldn't pull it off.

Is the Bamboo Pen similar to the Wacom Tablets?

Only if you're creative. This is a wide-open theme. The creative minds will make creative designs. the uncreative minds will just slap three of something on a tee and try to make some asian dragons. Because don't forget, asian dragons almost won in the two derby, too!

Too close to the other design for rejection? If so I could ditch the tricycle...

Do most of you artists draw by hand and then scan and color in something like photoshop? I am interested in trying to enter sometime, but it's a bit intimidating!

I used to do work that way but in the last couple years I just sketch directly into PS or AI. Streamlines the process if you can get used to it.

I think these are pretty awesome, I've always had a fondness for these peculiar little creatures. Next time I bake cookies, I'm going to make them look like trilobytes.

art, I have your last pb&j music factory one, and it is epic (only wish I had it in a medium, as I've lost a lot of weight since that one sold and OF COURSE the great shirts reckon quickly).

If this placed, I would buy the heck out of it, and have an artulo-designed pb&j shirt that fit. A guy can dream . . .

Here's something I've been working on... still trying to work out the colors..right now thinking grass or kelly. Now going to experiment adding a unifying lighter (or darker) green in the background on the kelly one. Preferences or suggestions welcome, thanks!

i hand draw my designs then scan them and clean them up in photoshop, then either ink them in illustrator or photoshop. its quicker for me to draw straight onto the computer but only if you have something like a wacom or a cintiq. if you dont have something like that i would suggest cleaning up your drawings with darker pencil lines or ink using something like a light table. that way when you scan the image in its much cleaner and easier to color. hope that helps =D good luck!

Just realized I'd designed what's probably the first Woot "revenge abortion shirt."

Probably not terribly marketable. Oh well.

Where do you find Woot shirt colors? I usually just go to "Submit a derby entry" and click on that link, but "Submit a derby entry" isn't there since it's not Friday yet. Is there another place to get the Pantone codes for Woot shirt colors?

I refuse to answer on the grounds that I don't know the answer.

Hehe well actually I was thinking to include them, but having the mice wishing for sight didn't seem right! Also having 3 groups = more 3ness!

Edit:
