Adder has no credibility on these types of issues as he supported this as highly original and well executed 'art' when virtually the same concept was pointed out on a link in the forum.

http://shirt.woot.com/derby/entry.aspx?id=37774

In the current case, the linked t-shirt looks nothing like the contribution in question, and doesn't appear to have ever been printed anyway, which would be a requirement for the similar shirts exist rule to be enforced (assuming the similarity was high enough).

Perhaps Adder finds recurring concepts unoriginal if and only if they have been mocked up on a t-shirt?

I think the real story is that Adder plays favorites in the exact same manner as he accuses woot of doing; he has a few good buddies that he doesn't hold to the same standards as the people he criticizes.

This looks otterific. I'd definitely buy one. Love the simplicity of it and the clean lines. And stuff. I know nothing about art, it just looks pretty.

AdderXYU wrote:Well, one being intelligent and the other being Glenn Beck, yes, they certainly are.

For the majority who can't tell the caricatures at first blush, however, it will look like nothing more than two men in love leading to the apocalypse. Hence "implied".

That said, any wooter should know that celeb likeness is a big ol fail, and any woot voter should know that such things are not worth supporting.

I don't think that is what implied means. Implications require intention. My walking up to the concession stand at the movie theater and greeting the cashier in swahili may get me a jumbo popcorn, but it doesn't imply that I wanted one.

Which is more plausible

A tshirt designer is randomly hopping around Unencyclopedia or Encyclopedia Dramatica or wherever it was that thing was and finds that ceiling cthulu image by chance, and it just so happens to fit the current derby theme

OR

A tshirt designer is randomly browsing tshirt designs at threadless and happens to find that REM design by chance and it happens to fit the current derby theme

I'm not saying that anyone did anything that wasn't on the level here at all. I'm just saying it's a faulty comparison.

Regardless: Show me the post in which Adder decries this shirt as unoriginal? He merely responded to me when I suggested someone else run with this idea (which they were already working on, as that poster and I exchanged a couple ideas about how one might create this shirt before entries were accepted) linking to another version of the concept (which, ok, wasn't that well done at all) that all three had in common. I don't see how two submitted shirts is at all the same as random image on the internet - nor, again, do I see Adder complaining about the originality.

Also, it was hit on pretty hard that there's a slight difference between an average quality photoshop and hand drawing an idea. Not all art is entirely original - part of it lies in the interpretation (not that I believe the linked design lacked originality)

(I hate that thread, btw, and I am angry that I bothered to read half of it. It got mindbendingly stupid)

Basically, I don't think you really make a good case here.

This is the post where Adder says that tee is unoriginal. It's unoriginal. It's an easy idea (given the name of the derby, and given that people, as I recall, mentioned the song in the pre-derby thread), and it is executed near identically to the previous Polynothing design. It doesn't matter whether Patrick thought of it himself or not. It was done previously and better in the same method, and this should be rejected for that reason.

It's much easier to build a false case of hypocrisy than to build a true case of why this woot version should ever print anywhere with another very similar design in existence.

But the troll is right. I am biased. I think Drakxxx and Tgentry should get a whole bunch of prints for being excellent illustrators and frequently strong conceptualists. How dare I pick favorites based on design quality?

Now you're delving into the matter of opinion. The previous Polynothing shirt was a cute idea, but nothing I'd wear. This shirt, while a similar idea of course, is much more interesting to me. If this shirt wins (and I hope it does as it is one of my top four), I'd buy two.

Both are using rather generic ideas like the square icons that have been done many times over, so I don't think we can say this shirt copied the Polynothing based on similarity of design.

(I just pulled a couple people over to ask which shirt design they preferred. Unquestionably this one. Hardly a valid sampling of the public at large, but certainly enough to disprove your assertion that the previous shirt was done better. You presented the statement as fact, when it was merely opinion. Nothing is wrong with your opinion of course, but nothing is wrong with mine either.)

This is probably too late to win a printing, but I just want to try to push it up top.

The brilliance of the design made me smile at the same time as the sadness of the represented reality set in.

For those that don't quite get it, please read about the World Turtle. In basic summary, several mythologies (like Hindu) have the world supported on the back of a giant turtle.

Combining that image with the six-pack ring around the turtles neck, pictures of which were pretty much national sensations starting in the 70s, was brilliant. Maybe it's been done before, but I've not seen it.

Then think of wearing it as a public service announcement -- get people to think a thought about what we're doing.

Wearing it would be community service.

Really evil teletubbies? the 4 seahorsemen? Over this? No doubt all the art is good, but I wish we could get something a little more original (i.e. this shirt) printed at Woot. I haven't bought a shirt from here in a loooong time. I would definitely buy this.
