Springs used are based on door weight; and springs - even those rated for a particular weight - vary in quality.

I'd think though that if it was supposed to take that much effort to open a garage door, then most automatic openers would come with bigger motors instead of the tiny 1/4 or 1/2 hp you typically see. Also consider that in theory you're supposed to be able to grab the manual release cord and easily hoist the door up by that alone (it's a safety feature as well as being useful for getting in and out when the power is out)

should probably look into getting it tightened up, maybe some lube too. that's one thing people rarely remember to do. or, they use the wrong kind and make it worse. When everything is right, it should be quick and easy (and quiet) to get it up regardless of whether you use mechanical or manual means.

We have a remote attached to the side of the garage. You punch in four numbers and the door opens. Voila!
