Re: Big Blue Box series 2

This gets rejected but the much more obvious Calvin and Hobbes shirt doesn't? Can't really understand that. This is primitive stick figures running for a telephone booth. The other is obviously Calvin and Hobbes, not drawn in a primitive style at all, darn near looking like the originals. I can't understand the reasoning behind this. The Calvin and Hobbes shirt is 100 times more likely to get you in trouble because it's so clearly those two characters. This is stick figures and a phone booth.

As for the rejectionator, I think some rules are inconsistently enforced, but they are the vague ones like on theme. Similar shirts exist and copyright violations are swiftly enforced when woot knows about them. In terms of world nomination, you can't expect woot to know every obscure artist's portfolio, and they did the right thing as soon as it was pointed out (as tilteed and other companies do when such things happen).

I disagree - look at Physics. Anything referencing Schrodinger's cat whatsoever was rejected for similar shirts existing no matter how different they were. Here, a similar shirt (Calvin eaten by Hobbes) exists and no rejection has happened.

Re: Big Blue Box series 2

I don't understand why can't you run this woot? It's people running for a blue box. That could be anything, not necessarily a reference. Also, it's totally parody, because this would NEVER happen on Doctor Who. Plus, who cares if someone else did the work to create this stuff, other people should be able to profit off it! Gosh, it's just a teeshirt, woot.

I think the Rejectionator should list the actual reason for rejection instead of blowing smoke. That way people won't have to speculate.
And not only that...being consistent might help too.

I'm a photographer in real life, my husband is a graphic designer, and my mother is an artist (painting and sculpting, gallery works) so I have tremendous respect for the creative business. I love it and have a passion for it.

That being said, I also have a mortgage and two kids. I love designing shirts, I love having to randomly come up with something to fit a "theme," but I absolutely wouldn't stay up until 3 in the morning every Friday and take care of a toddler and infant in a complete stupor the next day just for the fun of it, with no chance at supplemental income.

Just to clarify.

I quite got the point, which is why I said it was put brilliantly. Every single competitor here is competing for the same one in three chance at $1000. It's a big prize and it is certainly a huge reason why the site should be fair about their content and exacting in their rejections. There are always people who deserve that prize. In this derby, I would not be offended were one of them one of yours.

I simply wanted to give the other side of the coin. This isn't just about money. It's about artistic ethics. And it's not just about someone's own opinion of art or ethics. It's about a big prize and not giving that big prize to pandering, mediocre, overdone, and potentially stolen work.

The problem I have with this is way the TARDIS is drawn. It has clean and perfectly straight lines. Shouldn't it be more primitive looking, like the stick figures?

I agree. Give your 5-yr.old a picture of the Tardis, a blue crayon, and tell 'em to draw what they see. Might get you closer to "primitive."

Hey...this has made it twice to the fog...there's still time for another revision!

There is time, but it'd just get rejected again, because there wasn't a specific reason specified. So how is anyone to know what needs to be fixed?

Re: Sabertooth

I'm curious if woot would ever be conniving enough to willingly let something that is blatantly infringing on a copyright actually print. Rejected copyrighted material doesn't seem to be able to justify legal consequences, or even a ban, but they could be justified if something managed to "slip through."

That might be thinking too optimistically, though.

Yes, I know the latter is slightly more of a "muted" style, but I found the idea more shocking. (note: I like both designs. I'm just trying to see woot's "logic" in the rejection.)

Ummm... wow. I didn't even think about that one. Maybe it's different because it's a bunny (in the shirt you linked to)? But still... if THIS isn't PG-13, then Raddishes CERTAINLY isn't.

Not that I have anything against the other shirt, because I own it and love it. However, I would also like to own and love this shirt! This is a bummer :/

I think rejections like "too violent/pg-13" are probably a bit more subjective than other reasons. So while I totally agree with your argument (though I would personally not have rejected either for violence), I'm more concerned about, for example, how a tardis design got rejected twice, but a calvin and hobbes design didn't, despite C+H's creator having a decidedly clearer stance on his PROPERTY than the good doctor's.

Some inconsistencies are inconsistencies of opinion. Others are inconsistencies of basic fact. I'm not a huge fan of either, but I tend to be more upset at seeing the latter than the former.

Graffd02 would have to contact woot and say something along the lines of, "Hey...I REALLY want to "fix" this shirt and get it back in the derby. But I'm kind'of having trouble "fixing" it, when I don't really know what's wrong with it, since shirt.woot's reason for rejecting was along the lines of, "Rejected = 'cause we don't think it'll work." (In other words, no reason given.) So could you guys kind'of throw me a bone here, and tell me specifically what's wrong with it, so I can fix it? Thanks."

Oh...and like others, I'm still waiting to hear the reason woot's not rejecting the Calvin and Hobbs shirt...

I have been rejected before, but usually I have been able to quickly change it and resub it. This one is unchangeable since I am unwilling to alter the concept.

I tried to look through all the legal mumbo jumbo and failed miserably. Does rejection return my rights to this piece, or do I still have to wait out the allotted 60 days?

To be fair, the best thing to actually do would be to wait until the last minute and then vote, otherwise you'd be giving an unfair advantage to fogged shirts that may only be a few votes ahead of unfogged ones.

Honestly, a pucker that isn't red just isn't right. Kenney, I agree with you, not your best pucker. I would have liked to have seen prehistoric cave drawings of puckers hunting and killing frowns and gurns. This falls far short of that. But at least ALL YOUR WORK IS ORIGINAL.
