Re: Prehistoric Meat Chart

Love it! The scribbly-ness of the design is great, and the simple colors too. Fun take on those diagrams of which cuts of meat come from which part of a cow. The shape of the mammoth is appealing.

(Strangely enough, my favorite cut of meat is how you drew the ribs... though the bacon is a close 2nd >.>)

From my understanding, its only temporary, but you are correct. Still, I wouldn't use this in the future out of respect for woot since I would have never created this on my own free will (it took woot's theme and derby to motivate the creation of the piece), and because the shirt wouldn't have been printed and widely distributed if it was for woot's services. Regardless, I still feel a bit mistreated, but poop happens... what can you do?

Also, I am glad you enjoyed my artwork. At least one of my entries suited you

I've never signed a woot contract, but my understanding is that few (maybe only one) artists (or artist) have a contract that reverts the rights to them when the shirt has died out. I'm sure it's more complicated than just that, but yeah. I imagine said contract allows for alterations (that or they renegotiated with the folks who had been chosen for "classics" - given the higher price point I suppose this was probably likely) so if it wasn't a misprint you may be up a creek, sorry to say

Nice hyperbole, but too much of an exaggeration to be applicable to what I meant about criticism.

I agree, the cuteness and beauty of the piece are deceiving, but that is half the humor in my opinion. I kind of hope it would catch people of guard to some extent, even though I didn't try to hide what is taking place in this scene at all.

It definitely succeeds at catching off guard! To each their own (though I think all yall creepy artists are crazy), but keep it in the derby, it's done surprisingly well already. (Ok, it's surprising to me since it's so creepy)

Some practice forgiveness while others may not. That is what the arguments in these threads usually boil down to. Many people that have done far worst than this dude are reward a second, third, forth and maybe even fifth chance.

I believe he did actually try to make this more original after being rejected. I know you guys will have something to reply, but I believe that a human can change... especially after that human has met failure.

And just to be clear, I am not directly defending him; I am going off an innocent till proven guilty policy. First sub... definitely guilty. This sub... innocent so far (although, I think the artist should change the hair, tiger color, and all things mentioned above to be on the safe side).

I wanted to do an old school "roll call" like you'd do in a regular graff piece, you know putting up the rest of your crew. If enough people hate that, I'll remove it.

I find myself agreeing with chump. It's an excellent piece for the most part but the lower right is shifting the focus away and also clashing in color & perhaps a bit in style. I like the concept though, wouldn't mind seeing it reworked in a bit to keep the same concept.

Then again, I'm no art critic. It's got my vote either way and I wish it well. Good stuff.

Thanks, Meg. The hands hopefully make this concept rejection proof, but at the same time, when just viewing the head and pigment spittle, there was something missing compositionally. I actually tried it without the hands, and it had the feeling like something was missing.

runnerfrog13 wrote:That makes sense, and I suppose the reason I don't see a problem with this one not being rejected is because I didn't see the original, and without the original rejected version, I don't see that this is close enough to C&H to be copyrighted. If that makes sense.

And Adder, the reason the mods edited your post was because calling people names isn't constructive or helpful. I'm kindof getting sick of you doing that. Even when you DO have valid comments that contribute to a discussion.

Just so you and everyone else has a reference you can always look at shirtderbystats.com to see Ramy's or anyones entries, even the removed ones. Also on parody, If I can recall correctly weren't there a few strips were Hobbes did eat Calvin? I may be mistaken on that but I thought I remembered some. If so this isn't parody. Also is it just me or does the middle claw on the raised paw look like he's flipping us off...

Always Flatter the King

Court artists were wise to show their royal patrons at their most flattering, even in the Cretaceous.

Re: Sabertooth

I totally saw the Calvin and Hobbes resemblance from the derby thumbnail, and I hadn't seen the original design beforehand. My biggest objection is that it's not even cute like C+H. Calvin and Hobbes is always cute, clever, and usually carries a deeper meaning, but this design is totally lacking...

Awww I love this. Very cute without being, you know...kyoooot. ^^ It did take me a moment to understand what was going on. I think it would have come across instantly if the T-Rex was holding his arms up like a body builder too, and if he was also wearing a crown. But honestly, I'm slow..it takes me a bit to get things anyways, haah. Great work TGentry!

Now that you've posted that, I'm even more convinced this new version should go the way of the dinosaur (pun not intended). The only thing that's really changed is what the characters are doing. If the shirt got rejected for not being parody enough, just because they changed actions doesn't make it more parody.

And even if it is parody enough...I invoke similar shirts exist!
