Yes. Please stay away from copyrighted characters.

Ugh...poor moderator having to trudge through 1500+ posts that say the same basic three things.

I punish my tattling child as much as the one being tattled on when they pull the "Daddy...she [whatever]" more than once.

Then again...I cannot stand whiny behavior.

Sorry that's the first thing I thought of when I saw the beefy arms.

Aww, this is funny, and I'd say fits squarely under the category of 'parody'. There are several video game characters, tho. Damn, I hate to advocate for Woot to bend it's already pliable rules, but... I actually hope this doesn't get rejectionated.

sogj wrote:(To the conversation between Sogj and bellarific).

I'm going to hop on the bandwagon for this post....maybe we should make a "why you draw" thread. Seeing pure-hearted reasons like yours makes me smile. For years I've always wanted to make entries for woot, but never did either because I didn't have enough confidence or moreso because I simply don't have the time to spend so many hours on something that won't help me out in the long run. I just graduated college and was thrown into a field that has even less job openings than the usual (Zoos are taking only volunteers because no one can afford to take their kids anymore) and so I'm working for almost minimum wage and as a military child, the healthcare bill doesn't affect me so I'm still without any insurance. With an extra 1k in my pocket I might be able to buy individual insurance and finally go to the doctor and get new prescriptions for my several health issues that (Murphy's Law) managed to get worse not long after graduation.

To see so many artists here that do this out of need, or simply out of love, get lost in the shuffle because of someone who does it simply out of greed and the want for shameless attention really makes me disappointed in woot. I was drawn to this place (no pun intended) because it seemed like I had finally found a place where original art was still sacred, where every average-joe artist or designer could have a fighting chance. With people who do not understand or care about the sanctity of art like Ramyb being allowed to not only enter but keep their blatantly copied
entries in the running (and likely printing) I don't quite know whether it makes me want to give up or be more stubborn and start entering more even though I know I'll never get close to the fog.

The sad part is, if Ramyb would just get off his high horse and recolor the tiger and boy's hair, there wouldn't be a problem. I would understand being stubborn if it was some character or idea that has been parodied and copied so many times that the creator(s) obviously have no problem with it (like the Apocalpyse Pony shirt...tons of people have had that idea without knowledge of others, myself included). But in the case of designs like Calvin and Hobbes where not only is the copyright stance well known but reiterated probably hundreds of times by now, just resubmit the damned thing and say "sorry". Not that hard.

loewinger1 wrote:This anti-voting idea destroys the structure of this art competition more effectively than any rogue plagiarist. It also makes many more people complicit in keeping underdog designs down. I can't support it, regardless of the cause. The Woot community seems smart and creative. It has to come up with a better solution.

Anti-voting of course isn't the best way to go about things. It does make the competition as unfair as those who are voting for Ramyb just because of the artist or name, not due to the merit of the design itself. It's not up to the community, however smart or creative it may be, to come up with a better solution. Aside from anti-voting, there is nothing else that the community can do unless Woot actually listens, pulls entries such as this one, and remains consistent with what it rejects or not. As far as I'm concerned, the structure of this art competition has been effectively destroyed by Ramyb and his supporters as he is constantly fogging and winning every week he enters competition. And if you see anti-voting as a problem, you need to see the fact that Ramyb keeps winning every week that he enters as a problem as well. And that shows that this isn't just the Woot community's issue to solve, Woot itself needs to be more consistent with rules. I'm all for people anti-voting if it means plagiarized pieces such as this one, where the artist doesn't seem to care for ethics at all (towards Watterson's stance on his creations), doesn't print or earn the artist any money. If after so long the competition remains unfair, I can understand if the voting method suggested to solving this problem is unfair as well.

It seems as if I'm spewing nothing by Ramyb hate, but just to clarify, I would have a problem with any other artist if they plagiarize Calvin and Hobbes, or anything for that matter, and they too would not get my vote.

grahamcrackercoyote wrote:Love the shirt! +1

I suspect I'm older than a lot of Wooters and gotta say that the most obvious parody is of Harold and the Purple Crayon - which my Mom read to me multiple times and yet I'm pretty sure I never drew on the walls - just paper Wear the shirt around the young'uns and use it as a teachable moment about art, parody, appropriate venues for crayon masterpieces, etc.

I don't see how it's a parody of that-- the crayon is only purple because he is coloring in Barney. He has used several other color crayons, so it's just a normal Crayola box. Also he's not bringing anything to life, hes obviously recanting the take down of Barney, since he's wearing a Barney skin. Not to mention there's no onesie and the guy's got all his hair. No similarities at all other than the use of a purple crayon that was made that color for obvious reasons. All I see is Barney parody.

Aside from the fact that it is the artist's and it's pretty ethically bankrupt to take their work for your enjoyment without their permission - woot still owns the rights for 60 or so days on both of those designs.

Well, considering what you said

"So what about the people on here who couldn't create an uncute design if they were paid"

Megsck interpreted that to mean "some artists on here couldn't draw something cute if they were paid to" and given that you're linking to it, I'm inferring that's what you meant.

However, what you typed actually means "there are artists on this site who only draw cute things, even were they paid not to draw cute things". Maybe not your intent, but that's what those words mean. Now, there wasn't any need for someone to get rude about it, but it is true that your post was unclear.

In Woot's defense...they are people too. And the rejectionator (or rejectionators) have got a seriously tough job over there and I don't envy them. It's easy to criticize the decisions they make, but I have a feeling it's a lot more complicated than it seems to us looking in.

Well it would have been on Monday too.

But it's also about 20 minutes before noon - and were I a conspiracy theorist I might wonder if woot didn't do it so that there wasn't time to rework and resubmit this by the deadline (as just resubmitting would make it an obvious rejection target)

Darquis wrote:...Woot just had back to back (or damn near, it sure was bouncing as the night went on) sellouts.

Moreover, most people aren't hinging on "similar shirts exist" (although woot has been far more strict in their interpretation than you would be - see the Physics derby where *any* reference to Schrodinger's cat got rejected for "too similar") but rather the fact that this is blatantly Calvin and Hobbes and that shouldn't be allowed.

All I'm saying is that I've noticed for the past number of weeks, almost the whole string of shirts of that week end up in the reckoning and haven't seen a quality shirt worth buying yet. And pointing out that "Im Contagious" shirt supposedly only sold 1 when it was third in the derby? Makes me wonder why people are voting for the shirts they do.
