They are very good reasons to do things. I never said you didn't have good reasons for your options. I am sure they are very similar to the reasons for Impostor.

In addition, I never said you copied his work nor that you didn't have reasons. I said they were too similar.

I will give you the benefit of doubt and assume you are unacquainted with Imposter:
1) Why did you not look at the other shirts?
Or if you had seen it:
2) Why did not change things in an effort to make them less similar?
Or even further:
3) Continue to rehash what even you said was a really, really common idea knowing it was incredible similar to things that had already been produced?

I feel that you could have avoided having to justify the work while making it less "common" and "similar" to others. In addition others would benefit from a fresh air of creativity.

Many of the designs that get voted up are clever, cute, or interesting pieces of art, but not necessarily something I'd want to wear on a shirt. This looks nifty, has some flavor, and wouldn't make me ashamed to wear it.

kevlar51 wrote:In the end, is that really how to win here? I'm pretty new to the derby, and my designs aren't exactly "A" material, but it's discouraging to see folks jump up 100 votes in a matter of hours.

Many of those getting those votes are veterans both here and at threadless, so yes they are well known. You may want to try entering some dailies, and try to drum up some fans on deviantart if you're not already.
If you look through past derbys (use the blog, I think it's the easiest way) you will see more variety of artists printing than a Ramby thread suggests.
People also bemoan when a text centric design prints (like I heart math). What usually trumps here is geekyness.

I remember that piece. Bass is one of my favorite artists here. That was definitely not my favorite piece.

However, while some aspects of his composition are the same. The objection to yours is more than mere composition. I contend they are the same style employed for the SAME intent. You could easily rename this Impostor but that would not really work for Bass's piece, right?

Hmm. I have been following woot for several years and bought many shirts across several accounts. Forgive me but, I don't remember this style with your name. This, I assume, is not your normal style?

be10der2me- Thanks!
thathousekat- Thank you so much for the compliment~
cantantus- Thank you!
spiritgreen- Thanks, Spirit! I appreciate it!
yourkiddingright- I'm glad you can still enjoy my artwork every now and then, but I honestly put a good amount of time into this one. I even started on Thursday, which I usually never do. I appreciate you taking the time to critique this, especially about the proportions and how she's sitting. I'll definitely be more careful with that next time. As for the bird, I'm TERRIBLE at drawing birds. Believe me. So I actually went to look for a reference for a raven, and that helped a little, but I definitely need more practice. And the clouds, good point. Seriously, you had a lot of good points, so, thank you. But as for the 'good' artists who left me comments and everything, wow. I have a lot of respect for those people, so for you to say they're blindly voting for this...

I saw Impostor awhile ago when I bought my first shirt here, but I never really study it. I just glanced at it and quickly moved on to find something I felt was more appealing. I have studied it now since you made a big fuss over it, and I still don't see don't see eye to eye with you. And I think I have to leave it at that. No point in arguing over it; we just simply have different views, and that is completely normal.

I wouldn't even say I have a "normal style" because I am constantly trying new things and being experimental. As a result, I have many styles, but I always keep a cartoony feel to most my work (to some degree)... Here's one that fairly similar in style. Compare the scientist shoes with the ghost kids' shoes. Compare the chunky, stubby hands. Compare the ghosts eyes with the botz' eyes (not the mad or goofy botz... the concerned ones).

Re: Killer New Pet

Just a little unsolicited advice to people who want "art" on their shirts...

Capitalism is the death of art. Are the t-shirts that sell stale and banal? Of course. As is much of popular music, popular t.v. etc. When the goal of any artist is to get paid, the resulting submission is going to be that which has the greatest appeal to the most people. Unique, edgy, interesting? Art that serves as a mirror to society or promotes thought, or is simply beautiful? That is what you will find on the canvas of every artist that has never achieved true financial success as a result of their art.

The appeal of Woot is that it seems to promote the independent artist. It drags them from the muck of obscurity and allows them to reveal their ideas to the public. They can be seen, have the merit of their work judged by their peers, and if they are very good and very lucky, might actually profit from it.

Ultimately, though, it is still about money. The masses still want what is easy, comfortable, and familiar...it attracts, it prints, it sells, and the "artists" still languish.

Curse RamyB for his sins of the past if you want...but in THIS submission, his only crime is giving the people what they want.

Re: Candycorn Monster

I love your monsters, and this is no exception.

They seem very familiar to me for some reason, and I can't put my finger on it. They remind me of...something...a book maybe? I loved as a child. Are they inspired from something specific?

Not that this information is going to get people to stop voting for this, but I personally consider it a service to the voters to inform that the bats aren't even stock vectors this time around. They are made with a font, A font that's free to download I might add:

But please, continue to vote and pay the creator of the design a thousand, (possibly more) dollars for what almost entirely equates to entering in keys on his keyboard.

Except none of the bats in the design seem to match any of the bats in that font set...

2) No amount of reasonable discussion is going to change anyone's mind either. The point you are missing is that these people are wrong in voting for it in the first place. It doesn't matter that they like it. It doesn't deserve to print.

Who the heck are you to tell people that they are wrong in voting for a shirt which they desire and which Woot has not rejected?

I don't care for RamyB's drawing style and his overused cliches, so I don't vote for his designs. But I wouldn't think of telling someone else not to vote for a design I don't care for.

I've seen you and other Wooters stretch week after week in a (usually) vain attempt to get his designs rejected for one reason or another, and I'll be honest with you: to an impartial observer (myself, my wife, and some of our shirt-loving friends) it looks like you guys are grasping at straws.

Sure, I get disappointed when a shirt like this prints and something I really wanted goes by the wayside. But I don't go kicking and screaming about it. People vote for what they like. People have bad taste. This is not news.

Adder, it really seems like you in particular have an unhealthy fixation with RamyB's "artwork". I'll tell you what: why don't you come over, we'll eat japanese snacks and watch Monty Python's Flying Circus. You'll forget all about that awful RamyB.

Re: Horror Movies

One of the great Halloween traditions -- if your me -- is watching old horror movies on TV, so here are a few of the classic horror movie monsters.

The image was originally going to be black-and-white on red, but ghosted by using half-tones. Of course, that gave me a whopping 27.5 Meg print-ready file. So I decided to see what would happen if I just used the white on red (but I needed a few black outlines here and there), and I actually liked it a lot better. Of course, when I went to submit it, the print-ready was 20.9 Meg so I still have to e-mail it separately.

Two colors on red: white and black.

Comments and votes are always appreciated.
