True, it doesn't have the gravestones that the previous shirt had, but it evokes the haunted feeling in a similar way with that owl in the tree. I've seen enough "too similar to a previously printed woot shirt" rejections for designs far more different than these two.
First off let me congratulate you on your winning design, that’s some nice photoshop work that you did there. Effective masking between photographs isn’t always easy, especially trees. Color correction isn’t easy either for that matter. I also see that you got a lot of (assumedly) undeserved flak for your design, which is a bummer for any artist out there. That being said, I need to state that I've been following shirt.woot for only around six months now and had no clue that your shirt design existed, perhaps I should’ve taken a peek back through the thumbnails for previous Halloween designs but I didn’t and that’s my fault. I have to say though that, had I known of your design, I probably would not have changed mine in any way because while they share a couple of elements, you could say that about most designs for Halloween since there are definite themes…pumpkins, moons, bats, cats, zombies, candy corn etc etc. Compositionally speaking, our pictures are much different which I'm sure anyone with an art education background could attest to. Your picture features one main design element, the moon. Its large and in charge, it’s the background and it’s also the border for your piece since no other element is outside of it, namely the tree and the headstones. My design however features a cool colored tree as its main design element with the hot colored moon in the background as its complement, as Spiritgreen hit right on the head. It also has differing elements like the owl, the bats, the wind, the leaves, the placement on the shirt, overall flow, etc. We could argue originality until the sun came up but I just wanted to throw my two cents in and apologize that you felt that your toes got stepped on, wasn’t intentional at all. I'm not sure if you have a submission in this derby but best of luck to you if you do.
Thanks much to all of the positive feedback from everyone!
