Why does this just feel like pieced together clipart? Sure the idea is funny, but the gnomes and the gun don't seem to fit together like it was one idea.

Not even that. I just knew from the thumbnail it was a ramyb shirt, which is slightly peculiar considering it is enough of a deviation from his usual style where I shouldn't have been able to assume that automatically.

Well thank you for the compliment! I disagree as far as the abuse thing, but I respect your opinion. Personally, I think some would prefer an actual depiction of a phobia from the perspective of a person suffering from that phobia, as opposed to an image of a subject displaying irrational fear of something. However, I do think there is a place for both kinds in this contest Thanks again!

It was actually modeled after an airgun, not an actual gun

Haha, I'm glad someone spotted that. That's exactly what I was modeling him after From my research it shouldn't be a copyright problem in the way I've used it, though. Thanks for your concern!

frik wrote:Why does this just feel like pieced together clipart? Sure the idea is funny, but the gnomes and the gun don't seem to fit together like it was one idea.

Ouch, okay that stings a bit considering I spent many hours over a couple days on this. It's supposed to be incongruous, that's the surreal look I was intending. However, clipart it surely is not. Each of the gnomes was drawn and vectored much larger and shrunk down for the design, perhaps that could be why you think it looks that way? I guarantee you it was a single idea from the start (actually there was a bit more to it initially. I had included a scope with a gnome manning a telescope inside, but I decided to take it out.)

To everyone else who has voted so far, I'm really quite thrilled with my rookie debut here and you all have made me feel very welcome. Thanks wooters.

Re: Gnomophobia

An airgun, now I see.
It's the Beeman 2006 P17 isn't it?
Although you used a mirror image of the gun, if it were really the left side there would be the safety. Or did you leave that out intentionally?

So you recognize LRR, did he do fairy tales a-z at one point? Tho if that, or something similar, is why you recognize her it's unlikely to be grounds for rejection as it is substantially reworked. And if that is how the girl was done it would explain why she looks (to me) like a sticker placed in an unrelated scene.

Say what? Um there are many on this forum that are much larger of blowhards than tjost. Now for concept, can I see you do better? I love when people critize other peoples work with out showing a good use of the theme themselves. Tjost defended his claims with factual evidence and work that he has done before. Adder, now, I know you love to troll, but come on man, atleast get better fuel for your fire, all you have done after the first post is recoil and try to attack woot and certain artists that have no correlation to this thread.

AdderXYU wrote:The major difference there is that there is at least a confrontation of the fear. There is no confrontation here either. The riding hood character looks neither defiant nor fearful. Neither of them are directly "phobia" related (and that's the theme, not "fear." Fear needs to be present to justify the phobia, but the phobia needs to be present to be on theme), but you can make a far more lucid and intelligent argument for Stardamsel's based on the image itself. There is zero context clue in this design that the riding hood character is even aware of the lupine-representation-of-fear, let alone facing a fear or being fearful of it.

Combine this with the similar shirts listed, and the being undeniably similar in theme and execution to a Sekiyoku piece, also off theme and not rejected in its derby, and this should be gone yesterday.

So, I get from your post that in the version of Little Red Riding Hood you read, Red and the Wolf were bestest buddies that met up in the woods and then went to Red's grandma's house where she baked them a cake and everyone had a good time! You're arguing that "The shirt does not convey a fear/phobia" when you've been able to use your deductive reasoning to determine what the fear is. You're not asking "What fear/phobia is being represented?" I'd say that makes a good argument for following the theme.

And obviously, shirts with Red and Wolf have been done, so no one is ever allowed to make a shirt with Red and Wolf ever again. EVER. Oh god, there's multiple shirts in the derby representing a fear of spiders! They're all copying each other!

Hope this design wins. It's been a while since there was a design I was sure I would buy if it won.

Thank you both for your comments. This is a design I plan on reworking at a later date. The way it is now it looks a little "plain". With more detail, (shadows, highlights, texturing) it could look much better. It will be a nice exercise to pratice linework and coloring...

Record it. Either write it down somewhere or do a rough sketch. It may work for some theme in the future. I had a great idea for a Halloween T, but by the time Hallowoot came around I could not remember what it was.

Re: Along Came a Spider

I love this piece! Even though creeping things are not my favorite subject, the art on this is just bloody. Nicely done bassanimation and tjost!

I find it ironic that Adder can call someone cocky as if it is a bad thing when that's his whole game. I don't think tjost is being cocky, but rather defending his knowledge. Good for you for sticking to your guns. I think it's clear that a great piece of art does not necessarily make a great shirt. However, when you know the science behind how it will appear on the shirt, the odds of it printing the way it should are great. This is not my line of work, but if someone sarcastically and unnecessarily attacked what I do and I know I'm good at it and did it the right way, why would I shy away from saying so? That doesn't make me conceited or arrogant, but confident in my ability. So, well played, tjost. Keep up the great art and thanks for sharing professional information with the Woot community.

I know it's ad hominem, but it could've been said this way instead,

"I don't like these artists, therefore, I feel they should not succeed."

The point then, would be much more clear, without having to be under the guise of looking out for the average woot consumer. (which is pointless, because said consumers voted for this design, so why would he be looking out for them anyway). Should we listen more to the person who has experience creating these designs or the person who has experience looking at these designs? You either like these designs or you don't. Do we really have to resort to online bullying?

We get it. You think you're right, and we disagree.

That being said, I think this shirt is terrifying! It is very well done, which is not a surprise coming from Bass and TJost...

I'll say, "I like this design... and I like these artists. I sure hope they succeed".
