graffd02 wrote:Don't worry, I saw this one coming... This is just the latest in Woot's refusal to print ANYTHING that I make...

anytime I make it anywhere near the fog they find some ridiculous reason to reject me...

Apparently you have to have either a tree or a cute animal to make it to the fog without rejection, and popular culture counts anything that has EVER been made in any century...

your loss Woot, I'll just let some other company make money off this one.

I mean no offense but, I believe your bitterness is a little silly.

Looking over the work you've submitted to these weekly derbies, your issue as I see it is that you seldom forget to put an emphasis on the parody. You're upset because you believe woot rejects any submissions you enter that make a strong go for the top for reasons other than the obvious. The most likely reoccurring reason is that most of these designs of yours that are pulling in the votes are relying solely the depiction of the pop culture element you reference in them, and they offer little else. "Not sufficient Parody"

As the poster above me mentioned, your design matches up spot on with the actual Starry Night, which really makes it hard for me to sympathize with you in regards to the shirt getting the axe. Granted, I think as a shirt design it works well, and it's a novel idea, but really...

There are plenty of contestants in these derbies who are constantly bracing themselves with pop culture, and I wouldn't believe you'd deny that your one of them. Sometimes this designs dodge rejection, and sometimes they don't.

The inconsistencies with the rejections aside, take a good look at your submission and rejection history. Maybe it's time to work with some of your own ideas.

Most of the shirts I see with women featured on them scream white/Euro... This woman is slightly more racially ambiguous. I like that.

More of the same by the numbers, stock vector drivel.

Out of idle curiosity, how many thousands of dollars have you earned from that particular vector pack that contains those tree branches?
I hope whatever site you downloaded them for free off of has a donate option, and I hope you've donated generously.

I don't wish to be a thorn in ones side, but it does remind me a lot of my Tea Leaves. I say REMIND, because I can see it's not a copy in any way, and the style is definitely his/her own. However, when I saw it, I immediately said "it kinda looks like my tea leaves concept".

I know I praise Drakxxx a lot for his designs, but I think it's CD's color mastery that actually makes this sing, this time. You two have done everything right with this piece. A must win.

Re: The Last Leaf

I know I'm typically with Adder when it comes to most work here at woot, and I know his top choices this week were definitely some of my fav's, and thus, I voted for them. But I have to disagree with him on this one...

I like it.

A lot.

You have ominous turmoil in the clouds/sky that is all too common with the season, a void created from the two main features (the tree & the scarecrow) which pulls in the dusky, harvest evenings, and the blast of color coming in the form of the solitary leaf, clutching to an empty branch. It has direction, flow, and eye-catching details that make it stand out. Quite honestly, I'd like to see this, Drakxxx/CD and TheInfinityLoop all print this week.

Patrick, I may not have liked many of your pieces in the past (personally, your psychedelic tree you created that was referenced earlier, bored me to tears) but this one... Well done.

Haha, the starlings around here like to pretend to be civilized. Phone lines, yes. Roofs, yes. Trees? Ew, no!

Keeping on topic... I'm glad to see this one still in the fog. Probably in for one if it prints.

DTimeFun wrote:Totally digging this! I agree with Tjost that the swirls aren't really necessary, but nonetheless if I stare at it long enough it turns from fire to an autumn wind.
I really wish this could be on cream, but I like the yellow as well. Not trying to jinx anything but if it doesn't make it or gets an HM maybe the shirt color could be swapped. I hope I don't have to wait that long though. Yellow still looks fine. +1!

I agree about the swirls. They just don't seem to fit in. BUT, I love the yellow! Looks great with the blue trunk. I will most definitely be buying this, you know, once it wins.

Cute, and much better than the first version. But, while I know acorns are a fall thing, the colors here really don't speak to that season at all.

Re: Starry Autumn Night

I expect that this one too will eventually get rejected. While it is a nice idea in theory, when take the image and overlay it with an actual Starry Night image, you'll notice that the major artifacts like the stars, buildings, swirls, moon, etc are all in the same location. So it is basically an abstracted trace job of an original piece of work. I agree the effect is cool and working of the piece makes for a nice looking shirt. And for all I know, the creator of this work may just be that good at placing things when they reference another piece, I just would expect more effort to add their own work to the piece.

No. Yes.

As mentioned before, even if it wasn't a straight trace job, there still really isn't much parody from the original to call this one an original work.

A long time ago I went to a traveling Van Gogh display at the Indianapolis Museum of Art. Had some excellent pieces. But what was cool about this museum (and perhaps others do it too) is they provide some equipment for art students so they can try to mimic some of the masterpieces. They have stools and easels (you of course have to bring your own paper and drawing supplies). So you can sit there and try to recreate some of the masterpieces which are sitting right in front of you. I've even done this before and was great fun. But the thing is, it's a learning tool only and never intended for someone to try and resell a copy of an original work of art.

I'm a Ginger, too, and I agree, this is just gorgeous. Excellent collab, execution, coloring...I think you did a get job refining her physique, she doesn't look Amazon, just strong as a tree should. Will the canvas look in the detail translate to the shirt? Jw.

I have to agree, squirrels don't sit like dogs on their haunches with their front paws down, so it just looks like the squirrel has no arms.

I actually like the other one better and think that the message is clear enough, I think a version with a caterpillar and butterfly instead of the grasshopper would make the message extremely clear if you were afraid it isn't clear enough, though I think it is.
