Re: painting in autumn

I understand the point you´re trying to make, but I´m not sure you chose the right way to do it... If your point is that with stock vectors anyone can do a design like the one Radiomode submited, you just proved the opposite, because his design is miles and miles ahead of this. Does this mean I like his design?? No. And most likely for the exact same reason that you don´t. But the truth is that most people that vote and buy here at Woot, wouldn´t know about Gomedia or stock vectors, so they vote for what they see, and it seems they like that kind of "generic" design. Buying a pack of stock vectors, or downloading some free ones won´t make anyone a designer. But the way you use them might make a difference. There are those who take a more "lazy" approach and rely too much on them, producing designs that although competent, lack in originality, and there are those who see it as just another "tool of the trade", and use them creativily with great results.

Love the overall composition and the swirly background. My only complaint is that in comparison to the rest of the tree, the leaf is HUGE.

Re: Rake Break

This is so much different than any Woot shirt I've seen in the past! (Forgive me if I'm just ignorant of a slew of designs like this.) A lot of others are stuck in either the cute-with-no-texture-or-character or look-at-my-cool-deep-thought-design-with-random-crap-slapped-all-over-it shirts.

Thanks for the refreshing design. I don't typically buy Woot shirts because I don't like what American Apparel stands for, but I might have to shove my principles to the back of my mind if this one prints...

Nice work. Feels reminiscent of your Halloween moon and bats "jellyfish" entry (which I loved.) The sun reminds me of a Van Gogh oil painting. You probably could have done without the round "paint blotches" surrounding it though.

Re: Autumn Tree Dragon

I love the color and texture of the leaves, but there's something about the dragon that just seems "off" to me. Could be how far the jaw goes back (doesn't leave much room for the brain) or the lack of definite eyes...looks like the first red spot is the eye, but the whole row of spots appears so uniform. I also think the general placement would have looked better slightly down and to the right, but that's a matter of personal preference.

jasneko wrote:@chunkydesign - I'm totally fine about your comments about the squirrel. I saw other posts about it and was planning to respond. But why all the other assumptions? If you follow me as closely as you seem to believe you do, you should know that I pay close attention to feedback and try to improve designs whenever possible. I'm not sure why you decided you thought you knew about my attitude about drawing, that people vote for my designs no matter what I submit, my free time etc etc.
"I respect what you do"--> not really feeling it.

Sorry to understand that from what I said, you think I don´t respect your work. But that´s your opinion and you´re entitled to it.
Regarding feedback I don´t recall saying you didn´t take that into account. This design proves that you do. You made a submission and based on what others said, reworked it, and submited a different version. But what I criticised shouldn´t need feedback to be done better, it´s a basic flaw on your design, and for someone with the amount of sucess you have on Woot´s derbys, I think you should be more critical about your own work and set an higher standard for yourself. As for being popular, I think this design and the number of votes it got, in such a short time, is a much clear evidence of that, than anything I could write.
So, to finish, let me just wish you the best of luck for the rest of the derby, it´s obvious that a lot of people likes it the way it is, so who am I to criticise...

You really have it out for this artist don't you? I mean jeez man, everything he puts up you bash the heck out of, the sad part is, this artist has 2 designs in the fog, so obviously somebody likes his work, myself included, but then again i guess I'm just part of the mass media, and we all know that companies that pander to what people want dont make it far do they, like apple. Its the people who don't care what the consumer wants that wins.

I like it. Has a very modern look to it and is so different than the usual tree design. I think it would look much better on the shirt if it was shrunk down to a smaller size.

Re: Just Around The Corner~Take Two

Lovin' this, but I think it would be more aesthetically pleasing if the background was cropped so it was more of a uniform circle shape. I don't mean smooth edges, just the overall shape...maybe even made to look more like a square...it just doesn't seem very balanced the way it is now.

I'm kinda glad you said it looks 'off', because in a way, that was my intention. I wanted to make it look sort of disintegrated (hence why the rib bones are showing) since when I think of fall I think of things like rotting vegetation. The cheek muscles are split and pulled back, so the mouth is wider than is natural. I used to draw a lot of sort of drippy or falling apart creatures that way (example). And the third eye from the left is the "real" one if any. I just like putting extra eyes on made-up creatures, I like the effect, especially on dragons. And I wanted to do a sort of 'nature' dragon with multiple eyes for awhile now.

As for placement, welllll... being female, I try to keep my designs from being hidden underneath the chest lumps, so I usually keep them high in placement.

Thanks for the explanation. Love the drawing you linked to also. Very interesting. As for placement, it's just something about the shape of the design and the way that the leaves frame it that makes me want to see it in the bottom right corner...though you would probably have to make it smaller so it would be mostly on the stomach area without flowing onto the chest. I realize you have to take into account different body shapes (I'm large-chested myself.)

Where are the other 2? ;p The shirt color is cranberry (which actually had kind of a purplish hue to it, more-so than straight-out red anyway.) It looks more purple because of the oranges and yellows used in the design.

Would be perfect if it wasn't for the yellow shirt. Really nice work; I just can't get behind the shirt color. I think it would look great on khaki, but Woot doesn't even offer that Give the limited choices for this derby, I don't know what else you'd choose. Brown might work if you changed the existing brown in the design to a lighter color or maybe black? I wonder how it would look on cranberry.

Re: Lady Autumn

I love the background, but as others have hinted at, it doesn't really go with the style of the subjects in the foreground. The background is made of such fine strokes that the solid blocks of color in the woman's hair and deer's fur seem to be in disharmony with it.
