Except for catbot and bunnybot, most of the other bots were a lot more freeform -- the one that is froggish is accidentally froggish.

D1C0M wrote:I really like this one. Not sure why it's not getting more love.

True. I know this is a very competitive derby and this shirt wouldn't do very well but I thought it'd do better than this.

paigeg wrote:This is cute,. but you have a problem with your comp. You're showing the whole thing on black, but using a royal shirt template. The royal makes more sense if you're going for a blueprint/schematic vibe. But you need to resub it that way so Woot doesn't rejectionate it.

Both are supposed to be Navy. The "black" looking 1 is the color from Woots design template.

In regard to your other comment on the title being part of the design, I feel the design is the same with or without it putting it in the incidental text category. It isn't crucial to the design.

Re: Steam

I appreciate the branching out that you've done here, but I agree that his stance and position is a little off. His front right arm, the one behind his head, looks longer than the other arm. Maybe it's because that one is reaching forward, but it's hard to tell because his head is blocking it so it just looks kinda funny. Also, the way his body is twisted makes it hard to tell which way is up and which way is down. If you meant to go for this "endless stairway" type of illusion, then fine, but it's hard to tell that you were going for that and it makes the design look a little confusing.

However, I still like what you've done here. The shading is really interesting and I like the detail you have put into it. It looks like you spent a lot of time on it, so it might be worth it to re-work it a little with the changes mentioned so you can get the credit you deserve.

Edit: when looking closer at the steam vents and the shading, I can see how you wanted the dragon's torso to be twisted so that the back feet would be flat the way they are. However, this "twist" isn't really clear in the way you've drawn the torso, so it's still a tad confusing. Maybe it would be more clear if you made his belly scales look different than his back scales. Then you can draw the transformation a little more clearly.

And woot's rules, while they may be arbitrary, are still rules. And they shouldn't be ignored because you, or anyone else, likes the shirt.

You sure like to cast hawkish shadows, kylemittskus, especially in the light of a successful design where no rules were broken.

I think he/she is calling me the bully. In bass's deva thread, he/she took my words out of context and was very upset with me.

For the record (since Bass deleted that entry), I put resub in quotation ("resub") because I was referring and comparing it to Mr.Wednesdays definition of a resub:

mrwednesday wrote:...straight out of the ramy school of resubs:

1. Make shinier and change background
2. Leave remaining 98% unchanged
3. ????
4. Profit!!!

Call me a bully if you want, but I feel either I miscommunicated or you misinterpreted the discussion. I don't feel I "attack" anyone without some form of justification. That is not being a bully; that is being a critic in my opinion.

I still love you Be10der2me

Lagbert wrote:I really shouldn't post when I'm tired. I've corrected the original post. The pencil tool gives you the hard edges needed for derby entries.

If you have made the mistake of using the brush tool and now have a lot of anti-aliased edges you can always use the threshold tool (colors->threshold) to eliminate the anti-aliasing.

Excellent point and tip.
I've used the threshold tool myself before after trying out various downloaded brushes, because you can tweak the end result a bit.

i prefer this design to the redone one.

if i may be so rude, altho i am not a professional, i would like to suggest a change in colours. perhaps change the hot pink to a deeper or pure red, optic yellow a deeper yellow, green metal to grayish blue or possibly gunmetal blue. change the shirt colour to black and extend the glow out a bit to give the characters' legs a little silhouette.

I like the idea and shapes used, but I would prefer to see with other colors. The red on the eyes is really standing out too much and overpowering the whole composition, making the shape of the robots harder to figure out.

This is great! I think it is clear of the PG-13 rule since it suggest that she is wearing a dress.

I like the rotating halftones in the background, yet I kind of wish they were a different color. Almost any color other than grey. This design still rocks though.

Hey, midge! I've grown to be a fan of your work during your short time here. Since you seem at a loss as to why neither entry gained much of a foothold this week, I'll lend my insight as to why I, personally, wouldn't wear either shirt. Not sure if how I feel applies to other people; maybe it does, maybe it doesn't.

First, I'll start by saying your linework is great: grade-A comicbook stuff (and I've read a lot of comics). I'm not a huge fan of this coloring scheme, but the other entry with O-Roc's colors looks amazing, just beautiful.

That being said, I couldn't really wear either one, b/c the woman's costume would just be too weird for me to have on my chest. It looks vaguely S&M-ish, and I've gotten way past the age when I can wear that and not feel embarrassed. If it were just the skullbot character, I'd sport it in a hot second.

Anyhoo, that's my input, for what it's worth. Keep on submitting: I always enjoy your entries, and I've voted for many of them.

It's worth noting that generic designs will also tend to err on the side of simple, mainly because their designers aren't going for much effort. Some designers, like Edgar, often have simple designs that are insanely creative and strange that don't do well in derbies.

Thanks so much for your comment - it means a lot to me.

And I did try several different colors on the dots with different t-shirt colors - this one popped the robot in the most satisfying way. Probably just a difference in color tastes.

except for the glow, could you do some of the recoloring yourself, so that he wouldn't have to do much with it? just have od-roc send you the print ready, substitute the colours without changing any of the shapes, send back to him for glowy stuff or other minor edits.

As for accepted forms of slang, don't be offended if I laugh at the sheer oxymoron whimsy of that turn of phrase.

If it had simply stated "no pop culture" or "no pop culture references", then I would agree with you, but it said "no pop culture robots". Sorry Adder, but you're just wrong this time. That being said, I do wish it had said "no pop culture references," but sh*t in one hand and hope in the other...
