That's a great plan, Kevlar51. That's effin' ingenious, if I understand it correctly. It's a Swiss effin' watch!

And that is why I even bothered drawing in the first place.

I also love the characters. I am glad you went with the blobby monsters and stuck with what you wanted to express, and not with what sells.

Re: Well, nobody's perfect.

The color choice is phenomenal. Not to mention, there's actually an interesting message conveyed. I wish the design itself could be bigger on the shirt somehow, but I suppose it would require a different set of printing skills that Woot doesn't have. Great entry.

I like the basic concept, especially since I'm pretty sure this is a throwback to the Owl and the Puss-E cat. But as others said, this would probably be better on a different colored shirt. I like the sketchy look too, but more detail would be divine for certain.

Ahahaa, I love those skid marks. And how you somehow make things look so fantastically shiny without using cheap effects.

AdderXYU wrote:As everyone here knows, I am more fiercely defensive over Mr. Watterson's work than most. It is not because I -like- Mr. Watterson's work more than most (though he certainly was a genius in his field), but because, very simply, it is completely and utterly easy to find his thoughts about merchandising his characters. He wrote about it in prologue to the 10th anniversary C+H book. He has called people who have used C+H behind his back nothing more than thieves. He has said that he didn't even merch the characters himself because he wanted to preserve their integrity. Any artist, even a hobbyist, should realize that if another artist wants their work to remain theirs, they are showing zero respect by trying to sell even a homage. It is not your characters, and the person whose characters they are has laid out exactly why he is averse to them being sold, in a way that no artist shouldn't sympathize with. A person who would go against this, either in designing for their own gain, or in selling someone's work in thie vein, has shown no respect for watterson, and vicariously, brought their respect for ANY art into question. You might have a different opinion, but this is what these actions boil down to when you confront the evidence.

But moreover, there's not even a shred of parody. this is uber similar to the last C+H panel ever created, and the idea of vast, magical swaths of snowy land ready to be explored by the two is a common, common occurrence in the comic. So there is little to nothing to distinguish this from the actual product. Ergo this becomes a copyright issue. You can't just draw someone else's characters by themselves, without a new context and/or some strong commentary, and have it be legal. I am completely unsure where this idea came from, but it's frightening how common sense like that has seemed to become so deadened.

Finally, though, with such a simple line, the first thing that comes to your mind is a pair of copyrighted characters? That worries me most. I think of the moments where I realize how lucky I am to have people in my life, or the time it clicks that you've found someone worth striking up a romance with, or when someone comes into your life and they just click with you. I cannot help but worry what it means for society as a whole if people are having these basic human feelings attach most strongly to characters.

Adder is right.

Calvin and Hobbes is my favorite comic, but by taking his characters and practically copying them onto a shirt (for this image is strikingly similar to Watterson's last strip) it ruins the comic. I dressed as Calvin for Halloween one year, and as much as I would LOVE to have a shirt, a stuffed Hobbes, or anything with their likeness on it, it's just not right. It goes against Watterson and it goes against his comic.

In the end, it's really no more respectful than a decal of Calvin urinating on a car logo.

I agree with bluejester. Beware the Internet Trolls and just try to ignore them.

I appreciate the message you are trying to convey through the design and like that you did it from scratch.

People on here are REALLY touchy about Calvin and Hobbes, in case you didn't notice, haha. Just something to keep in mind for future derbies.

Howdy. Pro tip: In the future, don't use special characters in your derby title as it causes the bug you see here where it should display your thumbnail. The " got you this time.

I hear they may be working on fixing this bug. Oh happy days.

Re: Mrs Robinson youre trying to seduce me

Benjamin: "Mrs. Robinson, you're trying to seduce me."
Mrs. Robinson: [laughs] "Huh?"
Benjamin: "Aren't you?"
-- The Graduate

Poor Professor Robinson. While he's off trying to find a new source of water or do battle with the latest technologically advanced super-alien who mysteriously speaks perfect English, Mrs. Robinson sends the kids off to play (or be taken hostage, whatever) and see if Major West is good for more than just yelling at Dr. Smith.

Why, yes, I did recently find Lost In Space on cable, why do you ask?

Here's hoping the rejectionator sees the parody and that with this cartoony style I also squeek past the No Celebrity Likenesses Rule, because when I thought of this line, I just couldn't resist.
