I just found Woot around the time of the Home for the Holidays derby so I'm not familiar with a lot of this backlash and perhaps you can take this as a fresh perspective. I have no problem with an artist sticking with their strengths, be it bunnies or whatever (though you do risk stagnation after awhile). Obviously this artist has an audience and they aren't sick of bunnies yet either. We other artists on the site have to find our own audience because unless we're doing the same style we're not competing for Ramy's crowd.

Having said that, I shudder when artists ignore basic fundamentals like structure, mass, and gravity: the right bunny is essentially floating which doesn't make sense. His body mass should ground him and his little back feet should be resting on the ground. The fluffiness underneath would be flattened along the bottom. The design just needs a bit more thought. And please give the animals two eyebrows, they look lopsided without and the "style" looks lazy and perhaps like the artist doesn't know how to draw expressions.

I don't mind cute designs, I just prefer well thought out cute designs. Of course with attitudes like this: "Most of us dont care about anatomical precision, realism, or art." ... what's the point I guess?

Personally, I don't think it's a issue of not caring about anatomical precision, realism, or art. It's a cartoonish drawing. I also believe that is probably why most people don't "shudder" at the fact that it ignores certain basic fundamentals. When it comes to cartoons and their characters, I can think of many that don't follow the rules.

Keep in mind that I am not attacking your opinions or your right to shudder. I am not saying you're wrong and I'm right. I am just offering an explanation as to why there seem to be so many people that love his work.

I like this. It's just the right kind of cute (no button-eyed animals) and despite all the snow, it's a very warm design.

What's better than a narwhal? An evil narwhal. I bet all the other narwhals are jealous they don't have monocles.

Re: We Hibernate

I'm a little depressed this one isn't getting more votes. I love the simplicity and general feeling behind it. I think you did a kick ass job and I'm sure you'll have no problems recycling this one on another contest site. I would suggest maybe adding a crackling texture to this but that's totally on you. Good work.

Re: The Arctic-Walker (V.2)

So, again this is a take on The Night-walker from Miyazaki's Princess Monoke. I thought that maybe the pastel-y northern lights in the other one made it a bit too girly or smudgy or something and besides, I know how people feel about white t-shirts around here;) Anyway, this is try #2. Thanks to everyone who was so complimentary of the last version. I hope you like this one just as well

wcsae wrote:For everyone complaining that it's the same old thing and "ug" bunnies again, I'd like to point out that Ramyb had submitted another very good design that was vastly different and clever, but it got rejected and he retracted it. So it's not like this was the only work done for this derby, it's just that woot staffer took the other one out and this is what we have left.

That other design STOLE someone else's idea, namely Coca-Cola. If that's what you find very good, vastly different, and clever, I am not surprised to find you defending him.
