colinlowyc wrote:I feel like a better way to have executed this would have been to have each person see a personal leaderboard made of his/her own votes. The idea would be that after a lot of voting, we can see just how our taste would have shaken these shirts out, where being asked to rank them all at once would have felt more arbitrary. And it might help to eliminate reactive voting against the rankings on a collective leaderboard.

I think this system, chaotic as the leaderboard is, is much, much safer from vote rigging, and gives some surprising choices (TGentry's Ask Again Later, for example) a chance.

Anyway, the top 30 or so seem to shuffle like crazy, even every few minutes. One minute, I'm pulling my hair out over the leader, the next, it's dropped to 27th and something awesome has taken over, only to be usurped by something even worse than before. It's pretty exciting, actually. Although if any of a number of the top 15 right now win, I'll be shaking my head.

There were so many of these I liked but I didn't like the color they were one. I don't wear white t-shirts for a variety of reasons and red makes me feel weird.

i think his style works for some of their shirts. "behold a pale horse" and "my lucky day" are prime examples of where their style works well with the design. i think that the biggest problem with ramyb is that they so rarely put forth a genuinely good design. but when they do, i see no reason not to like it simply because of their past work.

not to beat black sheep in the closet to death, but what's with everyones entitlement and/or allegiance to designers? if you're so much better than others why even bother with woot contests. Open your own store and laugh all the way to the bank, with all of your super creativity.

patrickspens leads the year with 5% of all designs, 18 total?

i wonder which shirt was the top seller of 2010?

all-time leader The Binge sold 37,914 shirts, but thats since 2009, was it the top for last year as well?

I've spent several minutes trying the system out and while fun there is some room form improvement with your methodology. There is no allowance made for situations in which both choices are intensely disliked. It seems likely that this allows shirts that are not particularly well liked to appear higher on the overall ranking then they should.

One other note, the fuzzy question mark of mystery shirt is included in the possible choices for competition. While it might be that there are those who might prefer a random shirt over a choice of shirts it is not germane to choosing a most popular design.

Yeah. I noticed he has had a bunch this year too. And that nightmare hunter one (probably got the title wrong) is way toooo awesome. Sadly, before my time here

This isn't a random shirt placeholder that sneaked in by accident, they actually did print the fuzzy question mark on a shirt and sold it.

I keep getting glitches too. I'll make a choice, click the shirt I like, then when the images do their flying to the results thing, they disappear! When the next set of shirts pops up, it's the same two that I just voted on. Weird!

This sometimes happens three or four times in a row. I'm worried that either my votes are being counted multiple times or aren't being counted at all. Anyone else having similar troubles?

Oh, also sometimes the Leaderboard refuses to load for me.

Seeing how well shirts do on this site I think a reprint of maybe top 3, 5 or 10.

I mean how many people have seen shirts that were on here a month before the join or a shirt they just missed and wish they had it maybe even in my case friends that love my shirt and want them too.

Reprints are always awesome!

As for the battle I have been voting but sometimes I click a shirt then the same battle pops up again because I don't think the click worked and it's not showing at the bottom as if I clicked it. After about 2 or 3 tries it works again and it only does it once every 10 or 15 battles.

Love battling though!

It's doing the same thing for me--the results don't show, or I get the results from the previous pair, or the same pair pops back up. I also haven't been able to get to the leaderboard for nearly half an hour (it's 10:50 pst).

I agree that the system certainly seems to have some glitches, and I'm bewildered by the leaderboard standings, and I'm curious about the computer not stirring the pot evenly for the battles, but mostly I'm wondering if The Battle has so many artists so occupied that they ignored submitting designs for the last derby!

I had been looking forward to the talent coming out - Fire is a subject that should have drawn many more sophisticated designs. Where were they?

Come on, artists! I know The Battle is addictive, but don't let me down on the new derby!

I wonder if there has been a big dropoff in people working on the battle? It is sort of having a meaningless vibe to it- there's no conclusion. I get the feeling that I could pick a thousand times, and not affect the standings in any significant way at all.

You guys ought to put an incentive in there- pick 1,000 winners, get free shipping. something. anything.

It would be cool to see the, say, top 64 or 32 shirts from the battle put into a bracket. I'm curious if anything would change. Probably unnecessary, as the battle is basically a randomly generated bracket. Haha. I think I'm just getting excited for March Madness a few months early.

I keep seeing the same shirt pop up in 1/2 of my battles, doesn't that affect the standings? eventually ill find a shirt I loathe more, and be forced to vote for it. I've seen a bunch of shirts pop up more than once too, weird.

I'm enjoying the volatility but eventually, with enough votes, there would have to be some settlement, statistically. I wonder when we'll see that.

If you hate both shirts, vote for the one you hate less. A shirt at 300 getting a vote might move it up in the dredges, but it won't affect the better shirts in the top.

As cool as this is, I actually wish it was a battle of the almosts - the shirts that got voted Number 4 in each week's derby. Then we'd get the opportunity to buy some new designs.

Every time I look at the leaderboard things are getting tossed around dramatically.

It's really a shame... IMO there's only like 10-15 shirts that should be in serious contention, but only about 5 of them are in the running.

Hopefully no one is gaming the system and ruining it for the rest of us.

I've found this very addictive, but I agree that the leaderboard shifts way too much! I would think that as the best shirts established themselves that they would become more stable (shifting amoungst themselves rather than down to 27th, etc.)

Does anyone else find that the refresh rate of the leaderboard is too frequent? I find myself scrolling through, then DOH! The page freezes up as it's about to refresh.

I haven't seen the jealousy card played in a while. It's like seeing an old friend.

I've actually made my peace with the idea that Ramyb might win this. I haven't yet done so with Chucknorium doing so, however. That would be kind of horrifying.

Well, the other thing is that his best work tends to pale compared to the lesser works of many other artists here, who tend to lose to Ramyb anyway. There are about six artists I can think of off the top of my head who submit something better in concept, execution and artwork than "Pale Horse" and "My Lucky Day" virtually every derby.

I have to admit I've become a bit frustrated with the wild fluctuations in the leaderboard. I've been paying close attention to the position of "Rain, Rain, Go Away" by cmdixon2 since it's my favorite shirt of the year and it has bounced from 1 to 216 and everywhere in between quite rapidly. Every time the screen refreshes it seems to be in a drastically new position. The really frustrating part is that I can't decide if this makes me want to vote more to sway the leaderboard, or vote less because none of it seems to make a difference. hmmm...

I agree. I've come across a number of battles where I won't vote for either shirt because I don't like both of them and have to reload the page. A button to skip to the next battle would be nice.

I think you either hit reload to get another pair knowing you'll probably get this pair again, or you vote for the lesser of the two evils. Or you can vote for color. If they are just too cute for words, vote for the one you'd rather see on your niece, nephew, or neighbor. Or vote for the artist.
