Re: Star Power

There's a bit of a "Donna Troy" vibe to this I'm really enjoying, in addition to the fact that a collab between two of my fave artists is bound to be made of pure, unadulterated fantastic.

It's almost undoubtedly far too good for Woot, so when this prints elsewhere, please, PLEASE let us all know!

tgentry wrote:Your illustration and style are great, I don't think that's the problem. If I could recommend anything it would be to focus on your subject matter. You have good ideas (I looked through your past shirt entries) and a nice warped sense of humor. The challenge is to channel that into a shirt that people connect with and want to put on their chest. It's not an easy thing to do. I know for every one shirt I printed I did five that were unwearable. A lot of them were decent ideas that just didn't translate to wearable shirts. Not every good idea is a good shirt, and not every good shirt has a good idea.

A while back I did a list of recommendations to new artists that I thought would be helpful, and I think a lot of them still hold true (I've included it in my signature below). Stay positive -- you've got the skills and the sense of humor needed, I think you just have to find that niche where you and the audience meet.

Thanks a lot for the advice and the links. It's funny you talk about translating ideas, since I feel even those who know me think I'm trying to say more then I actually am. In all honesty, I'm not a huge fan of making a point, rather I prefer random and Jatravartid over something concise. I'm quickly discovering puts me at odds with almost everyone's taste For instance, I could have easily did something that looked more like the actual constellation of Ursa Major, with the star points and some gradient stellar stuff. Most would have preferred that since it's likely their favorite constellation, but my thinking says "One more gargleblaster, cosmic big bear in the sky!? Keep him away from our Earth Honey" "What, earth Honey?" "Shut up with your questions!" ... and that's really as far I go.

I'l concede though that this might all just be the process of going through a hundred bad ideas before I hit some kind of stride. So thank you sincerely for the encouragement.

odysseyroc wrote:My feeling is that it's too "stylized". I really like this design and I think you've done everything right from concept to execution. In my opinion, the audience here prefers generic and safe over style. Outside of a couple of artists, it's hard to predict what's going to get the votes or not.

It's hard to not get frustrated, believe me. I've been submitting pretty consistently for about a year and a half and haven't had anything finish in the fog. The designs I have in there now are the first ones I've had that have lasted in the fog past the weekend. Keep designing stuff that you'd want to wear and at the very least, you'll have something to shop to some of the other tee sites.

I guess you kind of hit what I was looking for, as in some kind of encouragement that says "Hey, this has happened to everyone. So I don't just throw up my hands and say forget it.

On a side note, Thank you for putting up those color tutorials on youtube. They've been great, and I've managed to learn something new in photoshop because of them. One of these days, if you don't mind I'd love to pester you further on the subject since I'm still a little confused about the quick selection tool and coloring like those who work for wildstorm.

Thank you for the kind words! Yeah, I gave an internal groan when I saw how many other shooting star shirts there were

Re: Star Divers

This is REALLY fun. I wish there were some changes - putting the figures behind the star splash; the sigils seem egregious but I can deal. The most annoying is that Saturn's globe doesn't fall behind its rings from the viewers' angle. But the comp is nice, and the colors, and I really do love the humor.

I'm almost positive everyone I know would get this.
I'm on the fence about the rectangle bounding the image. I could argue for or against. But overall, I wish it wasn't there.

Re: Hang Me The Stars

Pretty line drawing. But I'm dead certain, the way you have this comped on the shirt, it's outside Woot's printable area.
16X20, centered.

Re: Mr. Starwhal

I like the color, and even the tee color. I would have added another layer, desturated to black. Then offset it, and lower the opacity so it's just a shadow - to the viewer right.

The shadows are totally messed up. But I'm going to go out on a limb and say this is one of the most refreshing and personal takes on the Japanese styles I've seen in a long time. Those eyes in the branches are almost an afterthought, and yet you can't miss 'em.
Kudos!

Re: Mother Earth

Ah. I remember this. You've coarsened the stars (bigger) and changed shirt colors. But otherwise it's the same as the Earth Derby sub. I liked that better, I think, even though I'm anti-asphalt. The chunkier stars aren't doing it for me.
But the concept is still solid. Nice.

I think the angle is odd. Yes, it's awesome, but I might have canted it the other way, and centered. so it's drifting from the wearer's right shoulder down and to the left.
