I'm intrigued. The Japan derby produced some quality designs, so I'm hoping this one will be better.

I was in a bollywood inspired dance performance for an international festival in Australia when I was there a year for college... there is so much energy and excitement in the songs and dances - it was such an amazing experience. Soo much fun!

They don't call him King Khan for nothing! ;) The dances are tons of fun and the ones that incorporate classical Indian dance are beautiful.

There are also some great legends and stories in Indian culture. This one is an Indian Romeo and Juliet story. I found one with English subs.

So are you going to do something with this, odysseyroc? Or are you just throwing it out there in general and it's fair game?

Ok, so maybe I'll try to see what I can do with it.
Granted, it may not be in the spirit of the Derby. Although, movies are art too, and it would be inspired by the movie, so therefore it would be inspired by Indian art.

OK, I'm working on a thought. A Dharma wheel in the background, and two hands in front, crossed over the chestal area in the Dharmachakra Mudra.

Of course, that means I have to draw hands.

But it would save anyone who had the shirt from acutally having to do the mudra - they'd have it covered.

It features a peacock (the national bird of India) and is called "Unfair Advantage". :-)

Oh man...thank you Katy Perry for your Peacock song. I can never see those birds the same way again.

On the other hand...awesome! :D Should be lovely as I always know to expect cool stuff from you, SG!

This is what I've got so far, I'm calling it the lotus and the tiger.

I think I want to add some more lotus blossoms blowing from where she is sitting up and to the right. I'm also thinking about adding some embroidery to her clothes so that they look a little less plain. Thoughts?

If you can get an awesome peacock shirt printed, I will personally buy 3. My family has raised them before, so it's kind of a signature animal for us. The last peacock shirt to get close was Pretty Like the Boys. That was the best shirt ever. At least until whatever you turn out!

It was exactly that - a classical indian dancer came in to choreograph the first part for a group of us with a more classical style, and then the second half was bhangra with more people. It was the best!:D

There are definitely a lot of great legends and stories... I'll have to check that one out

So, in the past I've been trying to do designs with photoshop 3 and I don't have a tablet. I saw someone mention Gimp last week so I've downloaded it and am going to try using it for this Derby. Since I don't have a tablet, I usually scan my ink drawing into the computer and then fill with color.

My question: When I've done this in photoshop, my drawing ends up looking a little choppy. Is Gimp better for this? Any info would be greatly appreciated! I really want to get better at this.

Also, how do you display your sketch ideas and t-shirt designs on this forum for people to comment?

Sorry for the long windedness of this post

yes to blossoms in the wind. light on the embroidery, maybe something on the hem of her skirt? but nothing to take away from the tiger.

I personally hate gimp, I find it very difficult to use and the user interface is not user friendly I think. What I would recommend is drawing in pencil, inking, and then scanning and upping the contrast so you get clearer line art.

As to displaying work here, I just upload to imageshack.us and then use the url provided to link to the image.

I'm going to agree with mindputtee. I use GIMP, but only because it's free and It's the only thing I can afford/have access to at home. And no, the lines don't get better in GIMP. I generally end up doing a ton of refilling, thresholding, etc. My biggest problem with GIMP is the nutty-huge file sizes it produces. I'm really, REALLY hoping to free up some bucks for CS5 soon. Even with a mouse, I can draw circles around anything I can do in GIMP.
As for the tablet, they are available pretty cheaply - not GREAT ones, you understand, but. Try Sellout.Woot. They often have inexpensive tablets listed. I have one I probably paid less than $30. I didn't wat to invest in something really good until I figured out how to use one. I haven't yet, so, no fancy tablet.
And there's your equally long-winded answer!

OOPS...that is a Navajo Indian Taco

5 c. flour
5 tsp. baking powder
1/2 tsp. salt
1 lb. grated sharp Cheddar cheese
Vegetable oil
Water to be able to handle (make mixable)
1 lb. hamburger
2 lg. tomatoes, chopped fine
1 lg. onion, chopped fine
Salt and pepper to taste
1 lg. can refried beans
1/2 lettuce head, shredded
Salsa to taste
Get oil real hot (donut hot). Mix flour mixture until workable by adding water in small amounts. Make into large ball. Let stand 20 minutes. Take small soft ball size pinches off. Roll in floured surface by hand. Play with dough ball until large saucer size (or use rolling pin). Drop rolled piece in hot oil until golden brown. Drain on paper towels. Put refried beans on, hamburger, lettuce, tomatoes, cheese. Salt and pepper to taste.

GIMP doesn't really do anything that photoshop doesn't already do. it is good enough to win a derby with and make a print ready, though.

Still a total work in progress, but feeling like I'd like some feedback at this point... trying to get the effect of the embroidered mirrors on many indian fabrics, and have a reflection of some bit of india in the mirrors. It has a lot of work to go, but what do people think of the idea so far? I'm thinking each 'mirror' might be a bit small, so the reflections would be a sort of secondary thing to be noticed beyond the embroidered mirrors.

Originally I was thinking cranberry, but then blue might fit better with the reflections..

Thanks!

So I have a question and this maybe my own opinion, but I think that food is part of a country's culture, no?

Is it fair to use Indian food depictions in the design?

Or does that Navajo Indian Taco mean no?

I'd go with the front side. It looks like angel wings to me on the back, which I think have become pretty cliche for back prints--but on the front, it looks completely different.
