On a variety of shirt colors and with and without the henna design in a different placement. Thoughts?

Even though cranberry is one of my favorite colors, I think it doesn't fit here as well. And I do like the addition of the henna-like design. So either olive (upper-left) or brown (lower-right).
My 2 cents

With. Toss up between brown and olive, with a slight penchant for the brown.

Thanks so much paigeg and bassanimation! Happy to see your comments Any thoughts on the size on the shirt?

Edit:
Update to the mirror design. Cranberry or navy or royal?

I like the henna design, but I would put it center, so the tiger/woman are off to the side, slightly overlapping.

I LOVE this and I'm one who ususlly goes for the "funny" shirts. Love it most on the back, but probably because I think it would look like a great, full back tattoo. Wow!

I tried that and didn't like it. Polls are showing that green is favored (online and in person) so I think I'm going to go with that. Thanks everyone!

First this thread turns into a food war, then into purposely awful puns and one-liners...glad the derby starts now!

This is a cool idea. The one thing that isn't quite ringing true is the transition from elephant to embellishments. My brain really wants it to look more organic. Maybe the addition of color will help. Or maybe a more stylized elephant?

LOVE the top green one! Looks like they are sitting in front of a tapestried wall or something. The tiger and girl alone are nice but I like it with the henna design in the background....

If you are reporting a design that includes a religious figure or deity, please include which figure or deity is involved for comparisons sake. There are a LOT of them after all.

This is adorable megsck! I absolutely loovvee the tiger (and I prefer 1 or 2, the orange tigers).
A few other comments - I'm not entirely sure if the lady is standing and dancing, or sitting with bent legs further back. So depending on which you mean, maybe the legs could be redrawn slightly, or a shadow underneath could help, etc.
Also - the nose ring looked at first like a huge nostril, so maybe making that gold or just adding some gold to it will help.
Just my thoughts. Nice so far!

Love them all, but #2 is my favorite. It keeps the warm tones and the focus is very clearly the girl. The darker orange in #1 makes the tiger get a tad lost, and the white shifts the focus away from the girl a bit much.

Freakin awesome, cant wait to vote for this, Meg!

I like the second one. The colors on the tiger seem just right on that one. I like the third one as well, but have to admit that for some odd reason it looks more like a kitten and a little too friendly with the white coloring.

skaake wrote:So, in the past I've been trying to do designs with photoshop 3 and I don't have a tablet. I saw someone mention Gimp last week so I've downloaded it and am going to try using it for this Derby. Since I don't have a tablet, I usually scan my ink drawing into the computer and then fill with color.

My question: When I've done this in photoshop, my drawing ends up looking a little choppy. Is Gimp better for this? Any info would be greatly appreciated! I really want to get better at this.

Also, how do you display your sketch ideas and t-shirt designs on this forum for people to comment?

Sorry for the long windedness of this post

My two cents: The issue with a choppy drawing is probably caused when you go from paper to scanner, and then possibly when you enlarge, so GIMP / PS makes no difference. Pencil and pen drawn lines have a lot of artifacts in them; that's just flakes from the point.
Since I use GIMP and don't have a tablet, here's what I do: Scan at high res (the 300 dpi that Woot wants, if available). I adjust the scanner to get the paper as consistently white as possible. Then, I *might* take the scan and "posterize" it to get the pencil/pen marks to a consistent color. Resize to the 16 x 20 dimensions Woot calls for (if necessary).
Next, if I'm going to have outlines in the final drawing, I redraw all of the outlining in a new layer using the Pencil tool. I use a very high zoom (200 to 400) to try to get smooth lines.
Then-and-only-then will I fill areas to be filled.

It can be done with GIMP and a ... somewhat ... old-school mouse.

I agree. And all the designs that use "henna" in their title when they mean "mehndi" should be rejected.

So, does anyone have some good suggestions for how to scan lineart into Photoshop et. al. and have it not come out, well, tiny?

I can draw, and I know how to scan my stuff in and get it to the lineart stage, but even my biggest drawings end up, well, ridiculously tiny when I scan 'em in at 300 DPI (to match the shirt print resolution, so I won't have to rescale). How do you all do it?

I know some of you have pen tablets, but I don't yet, and I feel like this is a pretty elementary problem those of you who draw and scan-in must face every week. Any hints?

paigeg wrote:I was going to plead for a non-cartoon idea, but this is so funny! But, my own love side, I'm not sure the Rejectionator is going to 'get it'. Make sure your comments on the sub make the National Bird thing clear. Still, not sure it'll make the cut.
All that said, if this doesn't make it here, you should sub it elsewhere (with the cleanup and some stronger lines). It looks great.

This looks fun and is amusing, but there's nothing about it that says "India!" to me, and a lot about it that just says "Birds!"

Basically, putting a peacock on a shirt isn't enough--it's not going to make anyone who sees the shirt automatically think of India.

Blast my stupidity!

Can I get in on these evil plots to win? Maybe next derby we can create a fake account named "TGentby" and steer people in the wrong direction. We'll say things like, "Our legal team has found some loopholes, and it looks like plagiarizing copyrighted characters is now fair game" and, "Nudity in your designs is now not only allowed, but also mandatory" or, "After some consideration, the derby theme has now been changed to 'Curse Words' (text allowed!)" ;)

I really like this as a design--I like peacocks, they're beautiful--but none of this is screaming "India!" to me. Basically I have the same problem with this shirt that I'm going to have with any shirt with just a peacock on it.

A little smaller on the shirt

This has a lot of texture. I like its texture and color and I feel the texture on the sari gives the shirt some movement.

That being said, I am kind of in sadland at how many of these shirts are featuring beautiful Indian women in saris. I mean, India has those, right, and there's nothing wrong with beautiful Indian women in saris. But India has a lot more than beautiful Indian women in saris.

I am personally trying to think of a way I could possibly make Indian food look fantastically tasty and recognizable on a tshirt, because everybody here seems really hungry for crazy awesome foods.
